At a press conference in Steve Jobs said that a 3. Virtually all current Android flagship smartphones come with at least 5-inch screen diameters, the LG G2 and the brand new Sony Xperia Z2 even feature 5.

Thanks to advanced display technologies and ever thinner bezels the overall dimensions of the devices have proportionally grown less than the screens but nevertheless large pockets are required for carrying the latest generation of Android and Windows Phone flagship devices.

That said, despite the trend toward almost tablet-sized smartphones there is still a large demand for smaller smartphones from users who are contemplating a switch from iOS and its smaller phones to another mobile OS.

Most manufacturers have realized that, too, and have designed smaller versions of their flagship smartphones to cater to those user who prefer more pocketable devices.

In this shootout we pit three of those models against each other: LG also just announced the G2 Mini but the device is not available yet at this point.

We will have a closer look at it once we get our hands on a sample unit. The manufacturers of the three devices in this shootout have approached the compact smartphone topic in different ways.

Both come with slower CPUs than their bigger counterparts and the camera modules are less advanced as well. The table below provides a more detailed overview of the specifications of our test models: For the purpose of this shootout we have taken sample images in a variety of light situations and compared the results.

All shots were taken handheld from the same position. We took between five and 10 pictures of each scene with each device and picked the best one for the comparison.

We have included both image versions in our shootout to show you what the Sony’s camera is capable of in both modes. Click through to the next page to see how the candidates performed in our test scenarios.

My Sony is a nice smart phone and takes great pictures but the sensor has a dirt issue. Sonys only suggestion was to send it to a service centre My 3G HTC was almost as good and no dirt on the sensor.

I only changed to a new phone for 4g and the camera Appalling after sales service attitude Thanks for a most informative review Lars. It confirmed my decision that the Samsung S4 Mini is the best phone for my needs, producing sharp, contrasty images, indoors with flash and out, that are perfect for sharing with friends on social media and for displaying on computer screens.

The Sony’s camera may be superior in rendering high ISO fine details for a cellphone, that is, but its superiority mainly shows when printing large prints, which is something I never do with cellphone pics.

In fact, I find the one area that the Samsung won, i. This is especially important since most of cellphone pics in my case anyway are taken indoors. It would’ve been great if you included a quick video quality comparison since most cellphone users probably take as many videos as pics, but thanks all the same!

I assume you mean the Samsung Galaxy S5? This is a test of “compact sized” smartphones that are smaller than your typical flagship smartphone, for example the Galaxy S5. But do not fret, we will review the S5, too, as soon as we get a review model.

Hey Lars, I know the is not a modern smart phone anymore, but it still is a smart phone and does fit the criteria of being “compact sized”. I am sure it would, in terms of image quality.

But it’s just such a terrible phone these days that you’d have to carry another phone anyway, which kind of defeats the purpose of a camera phone: Hey lars, what firmware the xperia z1 compact was in?

Because the latest kitkat firmware has improved the image quality, its camera algorithms are much closer to xperia z2’s. I print phone images at several different sizes Hmmm, now that’s tempting I didn’t know there was a compact version of any flagship phone.

I handled a friend’s Z1 and found it ridiculously big for my taste. Now I may upgrade from my Xperia Acro S to a water resistant Z1 without sacrificing the size of the Acro S which I find borderline acceptable size wise.

I have a nice Samsung phone – very happy with it, all uses considered. So what you are saying is that the NX makes better photos and handles better than a phone? Not exactly the entirety of what I was intendind to express.

As a professor, I have been engaged with many students wanting to do very conceptual projects which phone cams might be best for. But I think the IQ limitations have been very obvious until relatively recently.

Yes, the image camera to phone transfer technology has improved a lot. But still, I’ve only got my phone in the pocket but not the RX, even though it’s a small camera ;. I am pretty sure there are more Android users interested in smaller phones than just “users who are contemplating a switch from iOS and its smaller phones to another mobile OS”.

Because I have not waited for a phone that has not been announced or released yet? If I’d always wait for somebody’s next model I’d never get a shootout done: But then you’d have to wait for the M8-mini, and the Z2 mini What’s more, even the GPU is better on the Z1c.

The Z1c is really in a different league The other two are just overpriced mid-range phones. Sony colours have issue problem most of it across. It seems a little too pink for my liking. Except only one Sony indoor pic is the winner.

Most of winner points to Samsung for me but in low light Samsung wasn’t so good due to white light was blown out. Definitely planning a shootout with the latest round of high-end phones when I’ve got all of them here.

In the meantime have you got an individual test of the Galaxy S5 coming soon? It would be great to put that up against the DxOMark Sony Xperia Z2 report from last week so we can at least draw our own conclusions between those two for now.

Best of all, the upgrade is free. The market research must have told the phone makers that people didn’t want thick phones. So gone was the effort to install a decent camera in a phone.

Sony offers more pixels but not stellar IQ. The images look ok in the middle but not on the sides or corners. There is no way to get quality photos from such tiny cameras.

I guess enthusiasts will have to buy phones for qualities other than the cameras. Besides, I ‘d hardly call the thick, rather ergonomic. It fits in most of my trousers’ coin pocket.

Can’t understand this tendency to flatness keeps continuing I am looking forward to a comparison of the same images taken by this new Z1 as well as the Nokia and the HTC1. The Mind of Minolta would be embarrassed at this, Sony trampling their good reputation at every opportunity.

To me, it looks alright for a phone, as though we only achieved higher MP while maintaining the current pixel level quality. Image sharpening is hideous though. I believe sony can give much better than this.

I’ve lost faith Sony actually can give us any better than this in a phone. To me it’s still rubbish and the noise is evident even in this easy low ISO lighting and the over processing woeful.

It only looks decent when down sampled to around 2MP and even then I can noise an artefacts in the sky. This sensor would have been excellent with MP and much more natural jpg engine.

I’ve already seen dozens of other Z1 pics from various sources. These just corroborate how awful the images are. Some of the grainiest haziest images around.

Even bright daylight shots are very grainy, like taking a pic of a textured photograph. The contrast is too high in some scenes and way too low and muddy in others. The images always look dingy.

Not a single clean image available. This would be competitive on phones 3 years ago. The waterproofing likely screwed up the lens quality like on the Xperia Z, and for sure screwed up the microphone quality.

Won’t go iPhone 5S because of the smaller screen. Kuddos for DPReview for getting these up so quickly! At this point, arguing against this phrase is a losing battle. Think of it as another term for in-camera cropping.

And yes, it is misleading. Yup, it indeed seems to be rather bad. See for example http: I’ve created a crop of it at http: Far less impressive than I would have thought.

I suppose if you downsample them to 5MP they are ok, but is that the point? To a degree I would argue that is the point, A well-exposed 5MP with decent dynamic range is all I would need from a mobile device but then In only post my pictures online.

Sure, that’s the declared idea of Nokia’s oversampling and I practically only use the 5MP mode on my, but is it what Sony has in mind? Sony don’t declare it that way but the fact that the default mode is 8MP sort of indicates that the 20MP mode is not what they’d expect you to use for normal shooting.

I got a cheap chinese phone recently. Anyways, to me the quality seems okay. The pics are not very sharp for some reason. The HX series effect. They produce exactly the same, not very good quality images – and considerably worse ones than those of, say, the Panasonic ZS30 or any comparable shooter.

So far, the results don’t look too different from what i can acheive from my note 2, which is a bit underwhelming. I a actually quite pleased with the X1’s camera. And that’s not because of the pixel-level quality, that’s horrible like on all phones.

But if you look at the pictures at screen size they look quite nice and sharp with decent dynamic range for a phone. Also, the OIS works really well and it goes up to ISO apparently even in some special mode, that I have not yet tested, so you can actually still take pictures in dark scenes.

The Note II would just produce a very underexposed image in those situations. The HTC One is quite similar to the Z1 in so far that is creates good overall exposures even in low light.

At least you can scale down and have got some more data to play with. Let’s see what Apple comes up with at their announcement tomorrow. I was hoping this Z1 would be able to produce comparable results.

Maybe the noise was really too much and the NR is really too aggressive. The output is not so bad at full size with other phones, and when you downsize the images they look sharp, but with the Z1 they simply remain soft The way they were showing off the Z1 at IFA would indicate that they’re really planning to attack.

Is it just me or do those images look like Not bad for a phone though I suppose. As digital imaging technology finds its way into more consumer devices, we here at DPReview do our best to keep you on the cutting edge.
