Wait until they announce a phone that runs Oreo with Project Treble. That would mean there’d be exactly zero development required to put AOSP on it. Probably both – ROM devs will need to improve quality of their ROMs for people to use them instead of a different one, but the easier ROM creation will also probably mean that many new people may try their hand at making one.

Wont really mean much on the custom rom front. Custom roms like OEM based roms have to edit and change things in just about every file. All the roms will be the same thing. I believe the vendor implementation is now what differentiates the phones from one another in the context of software compatibility.

So I don’t see how this won’t be a “real working phone”. That would be great, but we will have to see if these companies will actually do that. The A1 will be using xiaomi’s camera tech as well, not Google’s!

I was so down for it until I read that part. I want this so bad, but the smaller battery size worries me. Also GSM Arena calculates a smaller display-to-body ratio for this, compared to its predecessor.

Bezels are relatively larger. I don’t care about the headphone jack or ip rating bit no improvement on those front’s. I was hoping for a mi mix 2 with global LTE bands I was being sarcastic obviously Correct, you will not see a headphone jack or front facing speakers on a phone like this ever.

Meanwhile, the side bezels are actually bigger than the ones on the iPhone. But hey, let’s mindlessly bash Apple and promote another manufacturer! These bezels are still reasonably small nowdays there are only a few phones with bezels so thin.

I was hoping it would be a decently priced innovative alternative to Note 8, but no luck Huawei’s EMUI is much cleaner. Gosh, I can’t think of any other recent change in tech that gets your blood pumping like all these increasingly small bezels do Only downside to me is the p IPS bit.

MIUI sucks, but i never stay on stock rom for too long anyways so I don’t really care. Headphone jack, water resistance, battery capacity and good low light camera performance seem to be the casualties of this new war against bezels.

But I currently have Galaxy S7 and am not a fan of Samsung’s software skin anymore. Also fingerprint scanner location is an issue. Why is disqus messed up on this thread? Isn’t Xiaomi the one that backdoors their software?

Pair that with one of Apple’s new Silicone Cases for the iPad mini 4 for all-round protection. We’ve gone for a Gold model with a Midnight Blue Smart Cover and we think it looks gorgeous, with its premium aluminium finish and smooth rounded edges, plus its now super-slim 6.

It is also lighter, at just g or g if you opt for the cellular model, so you’ll be able to pop this iPad into a small bag or even a large pocket and you’ll hardly notice it’s there.

So all together, those measurements are That’s compared with the iPad Air 2’s x Aside from that, there’s nothing particularly noticeably different in terms of design between the iPad mini 4 and its predecessors.

Taking a closer look at that 7. That equates to a pixels per inch pixel density, higher than the Air and Air 2’s ppi. That’s not to say that the iPad mini 4 hasn’t had some screen improvements, though.

The resolution may be the same, but there’s a new anti-reflective coating to help with use outside in the sun, and better still Apple has removed the gap between the cover glass and LCD all part of the slimming process to make the tablet feel more solid and dramatically improve the contrast.

The result is a crisp, clear screen that offers stunning colours that is ideal for watching videos or playing games. Of course, the bigger screen on the iPad Air 2 is even better for videos, and while both tablets support the new Split Screen feature in iOS 9, there’s no doubt that running two apps side-by-side is a better experience on the bigger screen, but it’s a sacrifice many will be happy to make in exchange for more portability and a bit of a saving when it comes to cash.

Inside the iPad mini 4 is the Apple-designed A8 chip compared with the A7 from the iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2, which represents a big speed boost although it’s not quite as fast as the A8X you’ll find in the iPad Air 2.

That’s paired with an M8 co-processor that takes on all of the sensors to ease pressure on the A8, helping to keep things running more efficiently. Our Geekbench 3 processor test found that the iPad mini 4 managed in the single-core test and in the multi-core test.

That’s compared with the Air 2’s and respectively, which reveals that apps requiring more than one processor core should be much faster in the Air, but any that only need a single core should run at almost the same speed.

It’s impressive stuff for an iPad of its size, and in reality you’ll find that the iPad mini 4 is a smooth, speedy machine, even when running two apps at once with Apple’s new multitasking tools.

It has evolved from a design and technology test-bed into a user-friendly phone catered to a wider consumer group than ever before, while still evoking the wow factor. Introduced as a concept device last October, Mi MIX delivered an unprecedented screen-tobody ratio that heralded a turning point in the design of smartphones.

Mi MIX redefined the smartphone user experience as the first Android-based device with a Mi MIX 2 builds on the foundation of the original concept. It is now Instead of the piezoelectric speaker solution in Mi MIX, the second-generation uses a hidden speaker that only takes up a thin sliver of space between the top edge of the phone and the screen.

At the same time, the front camera remains at the chin and Mi MIX 2 continues using the ultrasonic proximity sensor. This allows the device itself with all the components to fade into the background, while the focus is entirely on the screen.

It has a beautiful ceramic back, which features a four-sided curved design that transitions smoothly into the aluminum frame. Isn’t Xiaomi the one that backdoors their software? The one that the DoD warned against using their products because they were so insecure? I can’t keep them straight these days.

DoD has never had any warnings issued against Xiaomi. Certain government jobs ban phones but it’s not restricted to any one company, it’s usually jobs that require a clearance and only special phones can be used i.

There are also government jobs that require a specific phone to be used due to various contracts that exist. Huawei was just released from the banned list. I work on sites that require security clearance and both oems are still on the restricted list for some sites.

I had a top secret clearance for years in the military, we never had any lists of banned phones. We had secure rooms were we couldn’t bring any phone into except contract phones.

And we had secure areas were no phones were allowed at all. But outside of those you could use whatever phone you wanted. And how long ago was that? With tensions as high as they are and all the hacking going on from other countries China being first in line Things may not be as you remember them.

With more and more people having the ability of buying devices like this from other countries like China and Russia things are tense, Heck at the nuk base I work on there are places that only allow Samsung and apple devices as all others are deemed not secure enough.

I got out in, but I have kept my clearance and done contract work since then a few times. Never had any issues with using Xiaomi or any other Chinese phones on secret bases, even at a base that doesn’t officially exist.

The only place it was an issue is in secure rooms where everyone has to leave their phones with security. But there are some jobs where it is required that you can only use an iPhone like the President and several of his intel advisors.

They are the phones that meet the rigorous requirements for those positions. It took a few months for the secret service to convince Trump to give up his Samsung.

Not sure what to tell you at that point. Huawei offers a huge choice of different visual styles and some truly impressive hardware, on paper at least. The old complaints about poor build quality no longer hold water when you look at something like the Ascend P7.

Pound for pound, or dollar for dollar, the Chinese manufacturers are offering more, which is part of what makes the copying so frustrating. Do they really need to mimic Apple?

Is it part of their business strategy? Are they relying on customers who would like to buy Apple products, choosing Xiaomi or Huawei because they offer affordable alternatives? The diversity and innovation in the Android scene is part of the reason we love it so much.

When Samsung sought a new design direction, moving away from accusations of copying the iPhone, it created its most successful smartphone to date in the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Blatantly copying elements is self-defeating for Chinese manufacturers if they want to expand into Western markets and be taken seriously. But, then we have to stop and ask whether they do.

The vast majority of the growth in the smartphone market worldwide is in China and the next ten markets Xiaomi is targeting. The average selling price of smartphones is coming down and Xiaomi is especially well-placed to capitalize.

Xiaomi selling mobile phones is like Amazon selling Kindles. So you can understand why we sell them for so cheap. The margins may be tighter, but Xiaomi still turns a profit on the smartphones it sells.

The Amazon comparison is about the fact that it also offers services and software that it plans to make the real money from.

The selfies I took made me look absolutely awful, so I vainly excluded them from the review. The image quality is mediocre, even for a tablet, but the camera app is downright awful.

The only setting to be found is a toggle to switch between the front and rear camera and photo and video mode. There’s nothing else there, well, besides a handful of filters thrown in as an afterthought.

The camera app doesn’t even allow you to preview the images you capture, you’ve got to switch to the album app to view your mediocre photos. Poor effort, but let’s be honest, most people are hopefully never going to use the cameras anyways.

These are two areas where the Mi Pad 3 performs surprisingly well. Here are a couple of benchmarks for the tablet for those of you who insist on such things. On the left is Antutu and on the right GeekBench 4.

Now, those numbers may not look very impressive to those who can discern their meaning, but I personally think benchmark numbers are limited in their usefulness.

With that in mind, let me tell you how the tablet performs on daily tasks. The half dozen games I downloaded on the Mi Pad 3 all played just fine, with only an occasional skipped frame on the most taxing titles.

In short, it’s actually very pleasant to use. Even when playing a more intense game, like Asphalt 8, the tablet gets just warm enough to be perceptible, and even then it’s only the top third of the device where warmth can be felt at all.

Longevity is quite solid as well. With an ample 6,mAh battery, I saw between hours of screen on time per charge, with a bit less than that when playing a lot of games. That’s shorter than the advertised 12 hours of battery life, but it’s ample time to keep you entertained during a long flight, or last for a full day of playing Candy Crush while pretending to take notes during business meetings.

The only concern I had with battery life is that standby battery drain is higher than I would like to see, with the battery falling percent overnight. That’s not as good as it could be, but hopefully it’s something that can be tightened up in future updates if there are future updates.

Speaking of updates, the Mi Pad 3 comes in need of an update right out of the box. It’s running Android 7. What goes a step beyond annoying to straight up aggravating is that some of the most important features of Nougat are missing in MIUI 8.

There’s no split screen support on the Mi Pad 3, which severely hampers its usefulness as a productivity device. You also can’t pin apps, or set up multiple user profiles, and expanded notifications are nowhere to be found.

Xiaomi has also done the best it could to mimic Apple by ‘iOS’ing the look of app icons, adding a quick ball shortcut tool, and by removing the app drawer.

I won’t harp on this too much, though, as installing a custom launcher is an easy fix to the homescreen set up if it bothers you. Besides the coat of iPaint, the software is fairly bland and unobtrusive.

The quantity of pre-installed apps is worthy of praise. There is not a single app on the tablet that I would classify as bloat. There are a couple custom tool apps, like the calculator and notes app, but besides that there’s not much else taking up space on the device.

This leaves a large portion of the 64GB of on-board storage available for personal use, which is good since there is no expandable memory on the tablet.

The available storage in the image is not indicative of the total storage capacity as additional apps and games were installed on the tablet when I took the screenshot. There are a few of software touches added by Xioami that I do enjoy.

The settings menus are also laid out in a manner that I found intuitive and user friendly. Besides that, there’s not a lot else to be said. It’s common knowledge that global tablet sales are down.

It seems we, as consumers, have figured out that very few people actually need a tablet. Our phones screens are getting larger, and our laptops are getting thinner and more tablet-like with touchscreens, fold over displays, and lift away bodies.

There’s just less need for a third device to fit between these two, and most people who need one already have one, and don’t have many compelling reasons to upgrade. Most tablets aren’t great for productivity, and the Mi Pad 3 is worse than average in that regard.

This new model can’t even run split screen apps. Where it does shine is as a media consumption device. There is a problem with the Mi Pad 3, though, at least for US based readers: Granted, those are limited time sale prices, but still, you’d have to be kinda nuts to go with the Mi Pad over an iPad.

Even as an Android fanatic myself, I readily admit that Apple just does tablet software better. I’m sure I’ll take heat for that in the comments, but I doubt any other writer at AP would disagree.

The screen won’t be as pretty, and the build quality won’t be as nice, but for less than half the price you still get a serviceable tablet. Perhaps you disagree, so feel free to tell me why in the comments.

Also, if there are any questions you still have that weren’t answered by the review, drop them below and I’ll do my best to answer them. If you want to read more about the tablet, then head on over to GeekBuying and check it out for yourself.

Have you ever walked through a mall and passed by the Apple store and stared longingly at the iPad? Ida know, iPads make great cutting boards. I dislike Apple as a company and as a platform so much I don’t really what a device that looks like iJunk.

I really need to start putting an asterisk next to every sentence that is intended to be read with sarcasm. Well I mean, Apple’s design is pretty good. Since they started using all metal designs on their phones, Apple devices have looked great aside from the absurd bezels.

Pre HTC styling though, their designs were some of the ugliest available in the smart phone market. The recent MBPs and onward are gorgeous. I’m typing on one right now.

Looks were far from the only reason I bought it, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t factor somewhat into it. It’s almost like there’s some law against making a Windows laptop that isn’t tapered, or where the screen and bottom actually meet flush, or which doesn’t have bits chiseled off the sides.

The MBP is one of only a tiny handful of laptops that actually look good in profile the Chromebook Pixel was another example, even with the weird hinge sticking out in the back. An asterisk is definitely the best and most universally recognized way to denote sarcasm.

I’m surprised nobody else is complaining about this. But, now, I’m kinda curious how an Apple made Android device would turn out. Technically, nothing would stop them, other than Apple considering Android to be an inferior OS Of course, without the Play Store Unless Apple could find a way to get iOS apps to run native on Android.

They would never risk that. They know how smart us Androiders are the tinkerers anyway, and they also know we would get iOS apps on other devices with some work. You need a lot of knowledge and time to do it.

Also Apple can easily lock bootloader and never give You keys or specs and tools to do something they don’t want You to. For example, see how DRM implemented. Without Google Play Services they even don’t need to pass Google checks.

So they may do anything possible to protect it from “tinkerers”. We might be a minority, but we usually give away the mods XDA devs. And if Apple did make a device, lots of people would use it; increasing the amount of tinkerers.

If they make such device, and it will be cheaper than iPad, it will sell good. Many people will buy it for “first Apple tablet running Android”. I expect high quality hardware. If it will even run iOS apps, then many iPad users may switch to it.

I have a Galaxy Tab A The Tablet itself it’s great and Samsung did a good job with Touchwiz, even if it is still running on Marshmallow. The apps however, on a bigger screen that it’s not a tv are a complete shame, terrible and embarassing.

I totally agree with the conclusion, I have an iPad Air and barely use, an iPad mini for work and it stays in my backpack most of the time. At some point I considered getting a Pixel C, but after giving it some thought, I felt that there was no need to upgrade, my Android phone serves most of my needs and my 2-in-1 Windows laptop fills the gap when in need for a bigger screen.

Unfortunately the apps I use on my tablet aren’t available on iOS nor are any app that can give the same experience, so I can’t just buy an iPad even if the OS might be better designed for tablet doesn’t matter much when it is the apps that is most important.

Hopefully Google or Nvidia brings out a new tablet this year or the next, so I at least have some good options when it becomes time to upgrade. Also most current tablets don’t have a finger print reader, so it isn’t as absurd as the written makes it seem.

Its the most-financialy rewarding I’ve had.. Follow this link for more information! I think it is time you guys stop complaining about the lack of app drawer in MIUI. MIUI never had any app drawer and probably never will.

Get used to it. When you review a device with MIUI, it is understood that it doesn’t come with app drawer. My first experience with MIUI. I’ll complain about it every time as it might be the only article a person reads about a MIUI device.

You are right, it might be the only article a person reads. Since when did the first Mi Mix have aluminium outer frames? I’m pretty sure both versions had ceramic outer frames with an internal metal frame.

The more expensive version is all ceramic for sure. Time for some real news and real pictures The Screen to body ratio actually dropped compared to MIX Just some picture comparisons https: Don’t be cheated with those promo pics Latest news Oreo 8.

Isn’t that a Mi Mix 1? Looks like the new one to me. Maybe a screenshot of MKB’s video from this morning. Nope, the first mix had less bezels. I already was a big fan of the first generation.

In addition to raising the bar for its innovative MIX series, Xiaomi also upped the ante in two other product lines — it announced Mi Note 3, which sports a dual-camera setup and a megapixel front camera, and upgraded its line of laptops with the new Mi Notebook Pro.
