Compounding the issue, you will have to wait for updates to its voice-search functions to include Netflix. The device comes with 16GB memory that gives you plenty of space to store your favorite movies and TV shows locally. This model can also act as a Google Cast receiver, enabling it to work with applications that support Cast but not Android TV standalone boxes. The process is basically the same as connecting your phone to your chosen network. Optimized for Kodi Capable of playing most 4K videos at 60fps Inexpensive.

But…if you want to get the best resolution out of Netflix, YouTube or any of the other major streaming services, then yes, it absolutely will. One word of caution though, if your Kodi setup is buffering, there are a lot of different reasons for it which have nothing to do with the box itself.

For example, my own personal setup buffers because of network traffic on my own local network. Some just need to change their settings in Kodi itself. Unfortunately, it involves a lot of testing to figure out exactly what the issue is on each individual setup.

Which should answer your second question as well. The interface on the Shield is not a skin, but a different but similar operating system. Matricom uses a skin. Tim, do you plan to review the G-Box Q2 by Matricom?

They have a lot of fans, but something has always bothered me about them. To me, if a company deletes any criticism, then they start to lose the trust with their customers. So if I tell you what I have and what I want to get can you please help.

I was advised to buy a Minix x8 plus but now I am completely confused so can you please teach an old dog new tricks with you expert advice. That box will be interesting to take a look at.

Most of the other S based TV boxes are considerably cheaper for similar specs. I used to have cable and separelty monthly subscribe to Netflix and Hulu.. What would you recommend?

OWN and of course my local tv channels. The box is just the hardware that plays the video. The U1 and most other TV boxes can do that with no problem. Interesting review — thank you.

Thanks for the tip! If I have sony android tv, can I get the same application to watch tv inside my sony, because the google store in the tv doesnt have a lot of application. It depends on the app.

That will hopefully point you in the right direction. How would this affect the consumer? I thought once you have Kodi you are good to watch what ever is available via Kodi?

But, keep in mind that Kodi is just like any other piece of software — it needs to be updated. Team Kodi is constantly daily, in fact updating the program to fix bugs, add new functionality and generally make it a better program for everyone to use.

However what would prevent the user from simply downloading the newest version from the Play store? Nothing would stop a user from downloading the latest version of Kodi — assuming their system meets the minimum requirements.

The trick for consumers is that it is VERY hard to figure that out until after the fact. Thank you Tim for your prompt reply. Will the unit still be supported by Minix if I upgarde to newer Kodi?

Also how often new versions of Kodi are released? Looking forward to your expert advise. MINIX will still support the device — no matter what apps you install on it.

Kodi updates their software frequently — say every months. SM said this on June 26th. I can only state what the new version of Kodi One of the problems was is that it would not shut down correctly.

It would take between seconds to shutdown. I uninstalled that version and installed version So in my case, updating the Kodi software fixed a problem. So the moral of the story — at least in my case is this.

I recommend you select the latest version of Kodi you can get your hands on that is NOT a test or pre released version. That version will normally give you the best results.

Someone for some reason decided to lock down the box as far as updates from the app store are concerned. Had to sideload the new version. I deleted everything and started sideloading everything I wanted.

After about 8 hours of work I finally have a box that works MOST of the time but still randomly reboots every once in awhile. This box is NOT for someone who wants a plug and play device, ha ha.

Vai dar o melhor desempenho do que o seu tablet. Espero que isso faz sentido. I really only use the kodi app. I have 2 boxes, a 3 yr old Minix Mini and a 2 yr old Mygica Have had the Mygica in the shop 3 times for software issues which were promptly resolved.

When I bought the Minix from my friend he was having probs with it. After updating all the apps including KODI it has worked great since. I still use the Mygica, but the Minix is my main box.

The one thing I liked about MyGica was their support network. Tim would you say that the Mygica tv boxes work just as well when compared to the other Android boxes? As a company, I like their stuff.

Which budget box is better for kodi and games? Of the rest, the SX is the newest chip and should have the best performance. Hi, I have been searching for a new box and was looking at the stream smart s4 or Rveal.

Both are expansive and appear similar. I want the best box, can you help? Yes, I am a new Kodi beginner. I strongly advise against buying an Android TV box on eBay.

Check out that article for more details. Is this still the original article, or have you upgraded the information about Androids available, your article is now over a year old, its hard to determine as I am no expert on these, and its not a dated article, but comments are over a year old.

It is a very useful and informative, well designed article. Thank you very much for putting your expertise on line. I actually upgraded this article in March. I used to create one of these per year, but I found that people were still visiting the old one and getting outdated information.

This way all of the latest information will always be on this page. What an excellent post, I have been searching around for a while now for a good comparison for the best performing android boxes on the market.

I wanted to know if you have much experience of HPH Nagrace? I just realised that the link wont work heres the full link https: RK boxes are old technology and this guy is selling it for GBP?

Stay away from that one. Quick question for you. I have been hearing a lot about these Octa Core boxes. The 2 people I know with the box rate them very high.

They stream 4k video, connect to Netflix, and carry the newest versions of kodi I am told. I have not been able to find much in the way of quality reviews for these boxes. Just looking for some clarification as to what these are or if they are worth it.

Is this still your top 3 list? The next box to be replaced on this list is the WeTek Core, but I have to narrow down their replacements. The Shield is hands-down the best TV box on the planet.

I see a couple of red-flags. The same goes for buying a TV box at a county fair, or flea-market. Second, anything can connect to Netflix. The hard part is if Netflix certifies your device to play 4K or even HD videos.

Third, be careful when someone advertises and Octa-Core device. For whatever reason, Netflix has been dragging the process out. I go into a little more detail in this article about Getting 4K Netflix.

You can check it out here. Thanks so much for this article. It helped me enormously. What was have most often is myGica. That increases the size of the box significantly.

In fact, it can do it in 7. The second one has more powerful processor and memory, but costs twice and a half higher. Can first of them cover my needs, or You can suggest some better model?

The AmLogic S is a very old chipset right now. I like the M8S however it runs on kitkat 4. Even devices that run Android 5 are now two versions of Android behind, now that Android 7. Noticeably better battery life on my Nexus 5X.

And one more question: As you might have read, I worked in a big box electronics store, so I got to see and hear all the brand new stuff right after we got it for sale. There are people that can hear the difference.

Another thing; Some say, that to watch p video on android boxes and not having them overheated, one must dril some holes in the housing, install additional radiators and coolers on the chip and so.

Which brand is more reliable in this case? Last three with the latest Amlogic S and Android 6. Nvidia expressed me much. Can others do it also? If I am buying a new box today, what version of android should I be looking for?

Unless you go for the official Android TV cough…Shield…cough. Who knows, it may find its way on this list. Looking forward to that review. Funny you mentioned that Daniel. My friend has one and she loves it.

I think its a Canadian company who makes them. Thanks for all the great advice. I am looking at one of the newest boxes on the market, I think it meets all your suggested criterea.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks for the quick reply. I always thought you could get at least p… but damn, regular SD, sucks. Much obliged…good job on this piece. Can you find the time to test the boxes at the low end of the market,..

Hi did you know of this andriod 6 and it tickets most of the boxes here the link http: The Amlogic S chipset is a little rough around the edges right now because it just came out. MINIX, as a company, are a class act.

I am trying to decide between the nvidia shield and the sky stream one cable cutter. I want to replace my cable and be able to get local stations too.

It must have Amazon prime video, Netflix and hboGo on it and be easy to use. I would like it to have an HD quality on all the signals plus access to tons of movies and sports. This will be my first box.

My wife does not care for tech stuff and will want as easy as possible. Included are the usual USB power adapter and a bare-bones IR remote with standard Android TV functions, although it does lack certain dedicated playback buttons.

The advantage of conventional Android boxes like this is that you can always use another Android-compatible remote if you so prefer. You can also attach wireless as well as wired USB mice and keyboards for use with a good number of key input-friendly android apps such as games, browsers, and filesystem managers.

In contrast to more proprietary streaming players from Apple or Roku or Amazon, this model is not limited to the official content of particular ecosystems, although it works fine with the Amazon Prime streaming services.

You can run your preferred apps and download content from your usual sites. Like with any regular Android mobile OS device, you can tailor the launcher interface and the viewing screens to suit the way you watch movies and shows.

Basic set up is readily completed once the unit is connected to the TV and linked to the internet via fast Wi-Fi or else wired internet connections. A large amount of internal storage will accommodate native Android apps with few limits and less need for constant transfers between storage spaces.

Like the majority of Android TV boxes that come with Android 5. There is a helpful settings menu that offers a number of options to assist users in setting up and familiarizing themselves with the OS and the built-in apps.

A default installation of Kodi version This model itself can play content encoded and streamed in H. The hardware is clearly not capable of streaming Ultra HD Blu-ray content over local LAN connections for this normally requires transfer rates that routinely exceed Mbps, which is beyond the capabilities of either of its network interfaces.

It performs at a slightly lower level than newer boxes like the Leelbox, but its operational quirks and performance guidelines are well known, having been tweaked for over a year into a relatively stable and smooth-running player.

Like earlier Chromecasts, it works with various computers and media boxes using the proper apps but also supports 4K HDR videos. However, it is not a standalone media player that can store and render content separately, and can only handle media in combination with another computing device that acts both as its remote and processing system.

The arrangement of the power supply is somewhat unusual. This is necessary, as wired connections are critical to good performance in 4K streaming media applications.

These usually require huge amounts of bandwidths, and HDR 4K video is even more demanding. The majority of services dynamically adapt streaming quality according to the available link capacity, which means that 4K-resolution streams will not vary as much over wired connections.

Upon first connection to the internet, a quick and painless update of the firmware will ensure, after which it will appear as a Chromecast device on your network to which you can cast streams with apps that are Google Cast-ready.

Your mobile has to be on the same local network that the Ultra is on, and you must use apps that are designed to work with Google Cast, i. Netflix, YouTube, and Vudu. Loading and buffering of content is usually more dependent more on network quality than on the hardware doing the streaming.

Popular 4K movies from YouTube started fast and clear, although 4K HDR videos from commercial services like Vudu could take as long as seconds to start running. In every case, once playback started we were treated to bright and snappy, correctly rendered video.

The Chromecast Ultra is capable of working quickly and seamlessly with a wide range of phones, tablets, and PCs. For many users who just want to enhance their non-Smart budget TV with a wireless display link, it may be all they need.

You might want to go over the following aspects when choosing one of the Android TV hybrids or else a more conventional Android box. Do bear in mind the many alternatives are available in this segment.

It will be either a specialized Android TV version or else a conventional if partly customized Android installation that makes a media player both useful and yet different.

After all, these forks already employ much of the same mobile OS with which you and billions of others are already familiar. The majority of models are standalone set-top devices that are dedicated to serving entertaining content such as movies, shows, and music on your big-screen TV.

The other scheme has some good ideas but does suffer from the big disadvantage of higher pricing compared to a plainer Android device. The integrated Android TV modules and name-brand Android TV players are generally not compatible with all apps from the Google Play Store, at least not without complex modifications or fixes.

The official versions of their apps are usually customized for use on specific brands and model ranges of Smart TV and Android TV player models in place of touchscreen-based devices. Among the most common streaming, media and player apps are the popular Kodi and Plex servers.

These are incredibly versatile programs that feature many great options for various online services that offer streaming content. Therefore, you need to choose a model that can get you the stuff you desire most, at any time and in any place with good internet connections.

The annual cost of these plans can cost less than what you might pay for a few months of traditional cable TV, which can amount to a few hundred dollars annually for the most inclusive plans.

Moving to a streaming media box and a cheaper streaming plan could free up a lot of funds that can be better used elsewhere. Do remember that not all of these Android platforms are suitable for everybody.

You can view these as standalone players and streamers that happen to run differing versions of the Android OS and access different subsets of its Play Store ecosystem.

The software side is much the same as that found on the vast majority of phones, tablets, and other mobiles worldwide. One thing though, a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard will afford better ease-of-use with many apps aside from the Kodi or Plex apps, which are useable enough with regular Android remotes.

As many Android input elements and prompts were originally designed for touchscreen manipulation, a mouse can be handy for doing things faster and more simply. Since conventional Android media boxes do not offer the full Android TV scheme, your experiences with these will likely not be as polished, especially when compared to that of the latest Google-powered Smart TVs.

This guide presents enough details so that you can learn the essentials and start searching for a model that meets your needs for entertainment and information. It can be challenging to find a streaming media box that plays all formats and pulls in most streams without issues.

There is a glut of models sporting regular Android as well as specialized UIs, all claiming to be best in one feature or another. For those out to get their first Android or Android TV box, the reviews here should help them find an inexpensive yet decent starting set up from which they can gain experience with the ecosystem.

Netflix or Amazon 4K content tend to be available only through a limited selection of usually name brand devices. In particular, Netflix shortlists a few set-top players that can pull in and properly display their 4K streams.

How these are implemented in various commercial services can limit the types and quality of content that they specifically make available to various Android and iOS devices.

What system you choose and how you update and configure your accounts on it will determine whether you will be able to enjoy low-definition but mostly free content, or else UHD versions of popular shows and movies that will bring the cinematic experience into your living room.

The models we reviewed should have each met all or most, and we had made sure to point to any item that a model failed to support or that the manufacturer has not yet made available.

Android is a highly modifiable operating platform, and you can usually find and install another compatible launcher and use that in place of the default. Just remember that there are functional differences between Android TV integrated into a Smart TV and an Android TV player as well as a regular Android media box that you can buy separately, particularly in terms of the available OS updates and the selection of apps.

Between these similar platforms, Android TV is the one that Google hopes will become your software media hub. Like the Amazon Fire TV, the newest Apple TV encourages you to stay within its part of its rich and highly evolved ecosystem, particularly when it comes to hardware and accessories.

The good news is that Apple has at last opened development within its app store to anyone who can meet their design and commercial guidelines. Apple also supplies an advanced new touchpad remote, having upgraded their unit to the For a home entertainment appliance, Apple is rounding out its Apple TV platform at a faster pace than Google is executing for its Android TV series, although Android TV boxes and their conventional cousins still have a big edge in terms of versatility and wide-ranging content.

More proprietary streaming schemes from the likes of Apple, Roku, and Amazon compel you to invest in their individual ecosystems and use their apps more or less exclusively.

Fortunately, you can find ways to install and run Plex server on the majority of these devices. To update to later Kodi versions, including the upcoming A quick look at Kodi: An Android TV box or its regular Android equivalent does have some disadvantages.

It can take time to set up these devices just right, and their very versatility means that most will need to have their firmware updated and their settings reconfigured regularly as issues appear.

We think the Shield is an incredible lightweight gaming console that offers decent media streaming under the aegis of Android TV. With the majority of the Android TV boxes on our list, it’s as easy as installing an app on your Android phone.

If you aren’t familiar with using one of these devices, you may be wondering why Kodi is so important that it would make you want to buy a device that allows for easy installation as opposed to purchasing a name brand with which you are more familiar.

Kodi is the main application that most people use when streaming media. For the controversial practice of streaming licensed media content without paying for it, which does have legality issues, Kodi is the go-to software.

For those who aren’t very tech savvy, it isn’t worth taking the chance on buying a closed platform where you will have to side load Kodi, because if you cannot figure it out, you are left only using the limited number of streaming services that your platform comes with.

In addition to streaming movies and TV shows, Kodi has a huge library of add-ons that let you to customize its abilities. You can install gaming add-ons to turn your Android TV box into a retro gaming console, weather add-ons that keep you abreast of weather conditions in your area, picture viewing add-ons that turn your TV into a slideshow of your favorite photos, and more.

The possibilities are nearly endless. Another convenient thing about Android TV boxes is that they can be used as internet browsers on your television, pairing with wireless keyboards and mouses to give you a full computing experience in the middle of your entertainment center.

This means you’ll be able to check your Facebook or e-mail account without having to pull out your phone or laptop. Some even allow you to install Skype and use your TV for video chatting when you add a webcam to the setup.

Looking at Android TV boxes in a lineup, you might be hard-pressed to figure out which of them packs the most punch, unless you know what you’re looking for when you crack one open. If you do know what you’re looking at in there, you’ll begin to see some of the more important differences among these boxes, like the processors they’re using or what version of Android a given box can support.

The key here is picking the best system for future-proofing, especially as 4K compatability becomes more important. A lot of Android boxes use yesterday’s processing capabilities to keep their prices low, especially since they’re primarily uni-taskers, only needing to run one operation at a time.

Still, 4K demands a lot of processing power, and a box outfitted to smoothly stream up to only will be obsolete faster than one equipped to handle the 4K revolution.

In addition to the ability to handle 4K media, there are other specs or capabilities one should look for in an Android TV box. If you plan on using it with a surround sound system, then you should purchase a model that offers a 5.

This allows your device to pass the sound signal from the media source straight through to your TV or surround sound system without altering it in any way, resulting in significantly better sound quality.

It will also help your device support 8K video as it makes its way into the mainstream. Over-the-air updating, or OTA, is also a convenient feature to have.

This is basically an app that makes your Android TV box check for updates periodically and, if they are available, automatically install them so you don’t have to worry about manually updating the firmware.

Android boxes often require a mouse to navigate the user interface, so a box that comes with a wireless mouse—or better yet a mouse and a keyboard—will generally be a smart choice, otherwise you may have to lay out additional money to purchase these items separately.

When looking at the cost of the models you have in mind, consider whether they come with all of the external devices that you will need. If not, make sure to add that into the estimated cost to help you determine if a particular unit really fits into your budget.

Finally, one might want to take style into account when making their purchase decision. While it should not be the deciding factor, it is worth mentioning that there is a certain degree of style to the design of a lot of these boxes and, considering that they are more than likely going to become a centerpiece in your entertainment area, you may want to buy one that you enjoy looking at.

Do not buy this box.. Heats up the cpu chip and can watch 70mins of stuff and leaves u hanging…will never buy this box or recommend to friends. Will buy A Sheild. Wilke, thanks for the recommendation.

I want to let others on this site know that I called Sky Stream twice and left a brief message both times and I had return calls within 10 minutes, which amazed me. As you can probably imagine, I get a lot of them.

The Skystream One is a really good TV box. Hi Tim, Based on your comments, Amazon reviews and the quick and informative response from Sky Stream I ordered a box early this morning.

I will get it installed next week when I return to CR and I will let you know how it is working. Great article and website. I see an Aura Live box and an older SkyStream.

Any suggestions or preference? Just wanted to say I have enjoyed your reviews a lot. My friends that have been talking me into one are all retired programmers or something else to do with computers but I am not.

The SS1 looks pretty easy to set up out of the box. Do you think the air mouse remote with the keyboard on the back is a good one or would I be better off for about the same price getting a full size logitech with a USB Dongle and also my internet since I live in the country is 20Mbps but I can upgrade to 40Mbps and thats it unless I go through a lot of expense to get cable internet a lot I have Dish.

Think I would need to upgrade? I find myself using an HTPC keyboard with a trackpad when that happens. As far as your internet speed, you should be fine with Mbps.

For streaming, anything above Mbps is good enough for two concurrent streams in HD and a little extra for your other devices. Great article and discussion board, I read most of them.

I did not read anything about the new Element Ti8 that came out recently. Any info or reviews on this device Tim? I would like to be able to run kodi, netflix, Amazon video and such on the device.

Netflix, as you may remember, is really picky with what devices it lets run in HD and 4K. It all depends what is most important to you. However, I feel like I have the potential to watch a lot more.

My biggest question is Does this box have the capability to for me to watch live local tv or live sporting events? If you can answer the question I will figure out how.

Thank you Soooooo much, Terry. There are several different ways of doing it. You can get different addons through Kodi, which may or may not be legal in your country. I live in Canada.

I have the 4th gen Apple Tv, and thought I may install jodi on that. I think I should just by a fully loaded jodi box? Which one would you suggest? I would like to get free live tv with lots of live sports, including american channels.

New here, and have been reading alot. Any comments or suggestion for on the T95Z Plus, running 6. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

In this case, if same box integration for streaming media and watching live TV is important, than Aura and Sky Stream are your only true, simple out of the box choices. I got one of the new 16GB versions on the release day.

U9-H will be delivered tomorrow… will let you know my opinion Tim, alternatively if the minix forum comes back online I will be providing support info there too!

I would just like to watch Kodi on my tv. I need to know what device is the least expense but still great for downloading and watching Kodi without issues. I downloaded Kodi and set it up on my android phone and my tablet along time ago.

Can someone help me out. I would really appreciate it. I have been reading the articles. And streaming movies is easy. Sports is always hit or miss for me. I either have a somewhat HD stream.

Or glitchy sub par blocky stream. I have a 2g box with 2. I have it directly hard wired on my Ethernet. And have broadband! So I want a box where I can stream any content without buffering and blocky issues.

Movies and tv are easy with exodus on pretty much any half decent box. But not until I find a reliable set up. I have no idea what this means. Is this a fact? Will I need to unlock it somehow or is that false?

It would seem to me if I purchase a product directly from the manufacturer it should come ready to operate once plugged in and hooked up. I just plug in the dongle and navigate with a wireless mouse and type addresses for add-ons from my wireless keyboard.

Maybe you should add Bluetooth to your checklist. Pretty sad day for me – My 2 year old M8s ott box just died refuses to power up Totally ready for the Dustbin. You might want to start with my Kodi Setup Guide here.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions! They just slap their logo on the top and ship it out. I prefer to have a channel list rather than Kodi. User-friendly for my family, in my opinion.

Hope you will excuse an uneducated question from a confirmed ludite. Is it possible to configure a Kodi capable box on a wireless home network to transmit to all our devices in our case 4 TV and 3 computers?

Technology advances are a two edged sword. There are a lot of old junk boxes flooding the market right now. The only real difference I see is in the boot up time, with Nvidia the clear winner.

For the price difference, it may not be worth it for most folks. Is buying an android tv box means a one-time payment investment only? Navigation should be ok with the TV Stick. Which is the top two 4K Android Boxes to buy.

Design The box comes with a Nvidia Shield TV, a remote, a power adapter, a controller, and a charging cable for the controller. Design As mentioned in our Nvidia Shield TV review above, the edition came with a refresh, which gave it a new compact design.

Connectivity Android TV boxes require the use of the Internet to connect you to some of your favorite apps. There are three things to pay attention to in this regard: Audio Passthrough Audio passthrough allows you to send the signal from the box to another device without affecting the quality of it.

There are a lot of great TV boxes in that price range, and there are even more coming out for next year. How would you rate the I-Box on this list? I mostly want to use for Kodi.

Really appreciate the article — i had an MK stick before but I was having too many issues with wifi and power. I am in the market for purchasing an Android box and some of them are recommending MyGica how good is it?

I was running mini ATX desktop with Plex because my original hacked Xbox classic went missing in my last move. I bought a couple chromeboxes to Kiosk at my job and started looking into set tops.

What would you advise? The NEO Z64 is limited to p. Can you please kindly provide some insight into the above choices and which you would pick if you were faced with a similar situation?

No amount of cores or fancy adverts should convince you to get a shield. Have you tested this? The Shield is useless unless you want to stream games Netflix 4k is built into any 4k TV worth having.

The remotes are rubbish and Android TV is pathetic, everything is a chore on the shield. Save your cash and get a minix u1 as it will play everything on kodi and plays 3d is files aswell, set it up exactly how you want, use proper ask, proper Web browsers and a proper remote.

Shield is just a fancy firestick. Hi Tim, I have a fairly new M8S bought new about 3 months ago. It is pretty good but buffers a lot and often jumps out of the menu or just freezes up.

I am frequently rebooting it to restart it from the home screen. I have the highest speed fibre internet service available so I think it is the M8S causing the problem.

I had an Apple TV and ran Netflix without any problems. Will it be significantly better than M8S? Thanks in advance for your help! Thanks for your question.

Do both of these products update the apps frequently? Are there any other boxes that might better fit my needs?

As most gamers would guess, streaming games tend to work with the least issues over Gigabyte LAN connections. FPS titles will still see the dropped frames on occasion with graphics-intensive titles like Borderlands.

Right now, the catalog of locally downloadable game and media is somewhat incomplete but not totally lacking in decent titles from the top publishers such as Hotline Miami.

On the content side, Android TV as a whole still lacks the majority of services from some of the big names in media streaming. This is far from the only set-top device to be deficient in certain services.

The clean but spare menus have the effect of making the limited catalog of apps appear smaller than it already is. Compounding the issue, you will have to wait for updates to its voice-search functions to include Netflix.

For game recommendations, it tends to do a bit better, but Android TV in general rarely gets this aspect of the user interface right in comparison to its more polished set-top rivals from Apple and Amazon.

Still, Android TV is the first entertainment ecosystem to provide info on movies and shows currently playing in real time. The functional design of the Shield may not be totally unique but its appearance differs from most boring set-top designs.

Its massive advantage in performance over most conventional Android boxes has earned it the distinction of being the first model capable of streaming local and cloud UHD content to 4K-ready displays.

The microSD slot of even the lowest-end 16GB model will allow expansion with more flash storage to accommodate a large game or media selection for quick enjoyment at any time. The list price of its lowest-end 16 GB model is almost twice that of its nearest rivals and more so than lesser-known yet decent Android boxes, and can be higher in the channels when supply is short.

Only you can answer whether the added performance, design polish, and large variety of gaming experiences is worth its much higher cost when compared to its rivals.

Owners will also enjoy one of the broadest selections of mobile and desktop-level games on the market, due to its capabilities for streaming media and casting apps from PCs and mobile devices from the local LAN or from cloud content services.

It can fully download app and game titles from the Google Play Store. The Shield is both a set-top streamer box as well as a hybrid gaming console that does many things but only a few of them well.

It is more competent at serving and running games from a relatively decent native and cloud selection, but the cloud content services it can access work do well and deliver easy and pleasant entertainment.

But it does bring its own set of advantages, not the least of which is its much lower price as well as readily available content. The MediaTek system-on-a-chip integrates support for H.

It is incapable of rendering 4K streams smoothly at framerates beyond 30 fps, but does default to smooth 60 fps operation with p streams. It still features the solid voice-command and voice-search abilities of the original Fire TV and remains dependable and responsive in use.

The remote operates with a pleasing responsiveness through its Wi-Fi connection. This development is what keeps the entire gamut of Play Store apps and content from being readily available on the Fire TV, and why Amazon had to put up its own app store.

It used to be that it would mostly respond to voice searches with references to movies, music, and other stuff from Amazon Prime Instant or Instant Video. Its developers have been recently refocusing the service to deliver universal search results, so you can now discover or find items spanning numerous catalogs from the likes of Netflix and Hulu.

The animated tutorial that runs upon first use to list the main features is a good idea. It immediately makes the system more welcoming and accessible and we wish this would appear on more media players.

The FireOS UI is uncluttered and easy to use and the large graphics and dark scheme of its screens should not give you trouble, as they are readily viewable from several feet away under most indoor lighting conditions.

The Fire TV enjoys a further advantage in its highly efficient codec, as it is also effective at streaming lower-resolution Full HD content. This Android TV box can efficiently stream p at the half the data transmission rates that normally obtain over most network connections.

Full HD videos load faster and render seamlessly and with less lag on slower internet connections, a performance feature that has no real downside any way you look at it.

However, certain UHD files may fail to display properly or not all with the default player or even with the usually dependable VLC app due to the absence of appropriate codecs.

There are currently no settings in FireOS to compensate for the feedback lags that can be generated in such setups. There are a few serious titles that offer exciting 3D gameplay, including Walking Dead.

In addition, you must factor in the subscription cost of an Amazon Prime, without which this device would be constrained. In any case, the subscription itself can be good value as it comes with gobs of free music and videos storage for pictures.

The Fire TV is an impressive streaming box for the money, as you get a UHD-ready player to go with some casual gameplay. This is a conventional Android box that at present offers one of the most versatile streaming solutions in the market.

A default working Kodi installation is its practical selling advantage, for it enables easy access to all kinds of content beyond the usual commercial sources.

This box features the latest available Android 6. Until recently, the majority of lower-end devices were using older S series chips, but the S is a generation faster. Its Mali-TMP3 graphics unit is relatively fast in its category and promises a pleasurable viewing experience with software updates and good connections.

The included HDMI cable is a welcome addition. The advantage of conventional Android TV players such as this is that you can find a better Android compatible wireless remote.

You can always use your favorite wireless or even wired USB keyboards and mice if needed. Generic-looking it is not, for the T95Z sports an interesting case design for a set-top player. Around the sides are the usual array of connectivity options, namely power, HDMI 2.

Set up is easy enough to accomplish, the unit only needs to be plugged into a display and paired with Wi-Fi, or you can use an Ethernet connection if you prefer. With these types of players, you have default access to the usual Android apps and content, which are available for download via a regular Google Play Store account.

The real news is the default installation of Kodi version It does come with Netflix preloaded for streaming 4K videos and music of the popular commercial site. Buyers who are not familiar with the app and its suite of add-ons should research on online.

As a result of the way Kodi works in retrieving some types of online content, access to certain channels may not be reliable or even feasible at times. Some could be dubious sites that ISPs in their commercial wisdom have decided to block or reduce bandwidth to, i.

Nevertheless, once you get things right and put it through its paces, it will open up your TV experiences like nothing else. The hardware is capable of flawlessly rendering content encoded in H.

Average in-game framerates peaked in the FPS range, which is decent enough for p scenes. For those who are technically-focused, the T95Z attained Geekbench scoring of around, while wireless bandwidth testing reported downlink speeds of about 32 Mbps Down and uplinks of 16 Mbps.

The T95Z performed very well with locally streamed p and 4K video, using Kodi and its capable add-ons. Its powerful cortex-A53 processor and graphics along with its plentiful RAM afford it huge advantages over previous boxes based on earlier ARM designs.

Like with similar low – to mid-range rivals, its IR remote can sometimes lag slightly and frustrate your movie watching. You can get around this through the use of more responsive wireless keypads and touchpads.

The included Netflix client does require a minimum downlink throughput of around Mbps to stream official content without buffering or dropping issues. Thankfully, the dual-band wireless connection is more than up to the task, and besides you can always use the Gigabit Lan connection for blazing results.

It is not designed nor able to compete with all-encompassing media solutions that have ecosystems tailored to ease consumers into the content streaming world. Aside from Amazon user reviews, a few online forums have sprung up around its variants in the market, where you can find some DIY advice on how to configure the unit.

The T95Z is a decently equipped mid-range device with a relatively affordable price that delivers regular local and internet media tasks, using a mostly Android 6.

Numerous add-on modules are available that will let you stream your favorite movies and shows from IPs other than the usual commercial sites. It was until recently among the most advanced and versatile Android TV boxes available.

It still features the Android 5. Its Mali GPU is relatively powerful for its class and is capable of pleasing 4k and p playback and streaming so long as you have fast connections and remember to install the occasional software update.
