Like the iPhone and recent Samsung Galaxy phones, the antenna is built into the frame, with telltale rubber stripes that sort conductivity issues. On the Ascend P6, this was badly executed, with the rubber protruding so you felt it scuff against your hand. Here, it’s perfectly flush – just one sign of massively improved build quality. The stripe of rubber runs round the back of the phone as well, and is the one element where Huawei’s design is better than Apple’s, which has thicker lines in a more dominant pattern.

October 18, 2011 – Video gamers are certainly going to have a completely rejuvenated gaming experience as the next generation of games will probably do away with baffling choice of screens available and switch to handheld projectors instead. Screens like HD, 3D, touch and more, the handheld projectors will now replace the screen with a wall. ‘SideBySide’ is one such gaming system exemplifying this technique.

Faraday Future, the secretive electric car startup with ambitions to overtake Tesla, unveiled its first production vehicle Tuesday, proclaiming it to be a “new species” for personal transportation. The company, backed by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting (YT Jia), announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that it would begin taking reservations for deliveries in 2018 with a $5,000 deposit for its FF91 model. In one key benchmark, the Faraday offers an estimated 378 miles (604 kilometers) of range before needed recharging, based on US testing standards, better than Tesla’s 315 miles. Based on European testing standards, the range is 700 kilometers or some 435 miles.Because Faraday started from scratch, “we don’t have to follow outdated practices or retrofit existing equipment,” Sampson said. “We have to flip the auto industry on its head.”The vehicle is packed with technology: it has a semi-autonomous mode which allows for self-parking, and multiple modems to connect to the internet. It personalizes settings for each driver and occupant. The sleek, aerodynamically FF91 demonstrated its muscle with an acceleration demonstration on a straight track in front of an audience, after similar demonstrations by powerful rival cars including the Bentley Bentayga, Ferrari 488 GTB and two Teslas. Those reports come amid news of a cash crunch at Jia’s Chinese-based technology group LeEco, which has been rapidly expanding its products and moving into the US market.

Huawei has consistently been turning out good value for money phones alongside aiming for the sweet spot with some flagship devices. The Ascend Mate7 is a premium offering which can go up against the best and doesn’t lack in hardware, software or appearance. The build quality and design is appealing (even if quite ‘inspired’ by HTC One M8) and the phone has dual sim, 3G and 4G compatibility. The price is a little high compared to the brand’s other outings, but the specs, features and looks are worth the money.

With a weight of 158 grams, its weight is about average for a smartphone of its size. This device’s battery is larger than typical for its size, which also gives it some extra weight.

For Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, higher-numbered chips are the most recent. So 821 is newer (and faster) than 617 and 400.When a low price is the most important thing about a phone, you’re guaranteed to make some compromises. But there are still some great budget phones that give you more for their price than others. Right now, we like the Motorola Moto G4 most, but we’re looking forward to 2017’s refresh. Talk about endurance. The Moto Z Play lasted an epic 13 hours and 46 minutes on our battery test, which involved surfing the web over Verizon’s LTE network. That beats most other phones by a mile, as well as the category average (around 9 hours). The Moto Z also offers magnetic mods to add extra functionality, such as a JBL speaker and even a Hasselblad camera. But the 16-MP camera inside this phone is plenty good for its $449 price.

AT T Next 12: Pay off your phone over 20 months, or upgrade after 12.So, for example, if you choose AT T Next 18, the price of your phone will be divided by 24. Then, that monthly price will be added to your service bill. Say your phone normally costs $600. With Next 18, you’ll pay $25 per month for two years. Once you’ve made all your payments, the phone is yours and you can leave AT T. If you want to leave early, you’ll need to pay whatever remains of your phone’s balance. If you like the old subsidized model—where you get a phone up front and stick with the carrier for a couple years, slowly paying for both service and the phone itself—this will be just fine for you. The only difference is that now, your monthly bill will vary with the cost of your phone. It’s also worth keeping in mind that AT T doesn’t allow you to pay extra towards your phone each month. If you’d rather pay off your phone in six months, instead of twenty, you can’t pay $100 every month. You can choose to pay off your phone early in its entirety at any point, but the full balance will be due. If you want to engineer a shorter term length, your best bet is to pay the monthly amount due to AT T, then stash a little extra aside each month in your own account. Once you’ve saved up enough, you can pay off the whole thing. You can also use AT T Next with Down Payment to pay some money up front to lower your monthly cost.As mentioned earlier, AT T Next also includes an early upgrade option. We’ve discussed before how these options may result in a bad deal. Next still isn’t great, but if you don’t plan on selling your phone and don’t mind staying with AT T long-term, you may still prefer the option. The early upgrades work by allowing you to trade in your old phone after you’ve made a certain number of payments. You can then get a new phone and start your payment plan over again. The plan number indicates when you can upgrade. So, for example, with AT T Next 12, you can upgrade to a new phone after 12 months. In every case, however, you have to pay off more than half of your phone before you can trade it in and get a new one. You’re essentially paying to lease the phone for one to two years. Worse yet, the longer Next plans are worse for you than the shorter ones are.For example, say you bought a $600 phone with Next 24. You’ll have paid $480 over two years before you can upgrade. Giving that phone right back to AT T wouldn’t be a great idea if you can finish paying it off for $120 and sell it for $300-400. Even getting $200 for your old phone would still put you ahead at that point. If you want to upgrade early, shorter contracts are better. In that same example, using a Next 12 plan, you’ll only pay $360 towards that $600 phone before you trade it in. You’ll pay more per month, but you’ll have spent less when you finally trade in your old phone, and you’ll only have to wait a year, instead of two years to upgrade. No matter what you do, Next isn’t the most cost-effective way to upgrade, simply because you have to trade in your phone. You’re paying anywhere from $200 to 500, depending on the price of your phone, to borrow it for no less than a year. If you break it, you’re also on the hook, by the way. If you’re okay with this risk and don’t plan on selling your phones anyway, then Next is an okay way to upgrade on a yearly basis. Just stay away from the longer-term plans if you can.Buying outright is an attractive option for AT T if for no other reason than it’s not complicated. Phones have price tags, you give the cashier money, and you’re done. You’re not paying for a phone every month, so your bill will be lower. You’ll also be free to switch carriers or upgrade whenever you have the money to do so.Finding a phone that works with AT T is also much easier than it is on Verizon or Sprint. AT T uses a GSM network for everything, and GSM is overwhelmingly more popular worldwide than CDMA, so as long as the phone you buy supports the correct radio bands, you can choose nearly any store, manufacturer, or phone model and find a device that will work on your network. You can also use WillMyPhoneWork to find out if you’re not sure.As long as you’re sticking to buying your phone outright, or financing over time, AT T’s plans are finally uncomplicated. You can choose to pay for your entire phone now, or over the course of up to two and a half years. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether you choose to finance or pay upfront, as you pay the same amount either way.The only complication is with AT T Next’s early upgrade options. Having to trade-in your phone after paying for more than half of the sticker price is a bit of a waste. The only reason you might consider this is if you don’t plan on selling your old phones or repurposing it for something useful. However, we strongly recommend considering an alternative first. And if you do use AT T Next, at least go for the shortest contract length you can, to save money in the long run.The bottom line: Getting rid of subsidies made AT T’s plans much easier to understand. Whether or not they’re cheaper is up for debate, but your best options now are to simply pay for your phone. Either immediately, or over time. Once you own your phone, sell or repurpose it to get the most value from the money you’ve sunk into it.If you’re looking for who to blame (or thank) for the changes to carrier contracts, it’s T-Mobile. The carrier started the trend back in 2013 by ditching subsidies altogether. Now, the primary way of buying a phone through T-Mobile is financing, but they also have some options for upgrading early if you don’t want to wait.Much like Verizon, when you want a new phone on T-Mobile, you’ll pay for the full price of the phone divided across 24 months. They refer to this as their Equipment Installment Plan (EIP). You may have to pay a down payment, depending on your credit and the cost of the handset. If you do, the down payment will go towards the full price of the phone, reducing your monthly payments.Unlike Verizon, however, you can pay extra each month to pay it off sooner, if you so choose. You can also make a larger down payment up front, or you can make optional payments towards your EIP on top of your monthly bill. You can’t just overpay your regular bill, though. You’ll have to log in to your T-Mobile account, navigate to the EIP section and make a separate, specific payment to your device payment plan. This will lower your overall EIP balance and thus reduce your next overall monthly payments to T-Mobile. Once your device is paid off, the EIP charge goes away and you just continue paying for service. You can also finance multiple devices on the same line of credit. When you’re first approved for an EIP, you’ll get a spending limit. You can add as many devices to this plan as you want, as long as you don’t go over that spending limit. So if you want to finance a phone, a tablet, and a watch all on the same line, or if you want to upgrade to a new phone after a year, you can do so within that limit. T-Mobile won’t make you pay the full price of any previous devices when adding a new one. However, if you want to sell your old devices, you will have to pay that particular device off in full before they can be transferred to another person’s account or a different carrier.T-Mobile’s first early upgrade plan is called Jump! It costs $10 a month to add this service to your account, which means it’s the only early upgrade plan among the major carriers with an admission fee. However, that also includes device insurance. Normally, T-Mobile’s insurance costs $8 per month, so if you were planning to insure your phone anyway, you’re only spending $24 extra each year. If you were not planning to get insurance, however, it’s an extra $120 per year.Once you’re signed up for the plan, you’ll make monthly payments towards your device like normal. Much like with the financing option, you can pay extra towards your balance if you want to upgrade earlier. Once you’ve paid off more than half of the phone’s cost, you can trade in y
our old device for a new one.Whether or not this plan is worth it depends largely on whether or not you want to keep your old phones or sell them. For example, let’s say you start with a $600 phone and pay off $300. For another $300, you could own the phone. If you then sold it for more than $300, you’d save money versus trading it in. Keeping in mind, of course, that you’ll also have paid an extra $10 a month for this privilege. If you’re willing to put in the effort to sell your old phones, trading in phones via Jump! is probably not going to be the most frugal option. However, you’ll also always have the option of buying out your phone entirely, so you don’t have to trade it in. Given that Jump! also doubles as device insurance, you’ll only pay a small premium to give yourself the option of trading in your phone (again, assuming you would have paid for insurance anyway, which isn’t always necessary). This can be handy if you end up with a phone that doesn’t retain it’s value well over the long term.T-Mobile’s newest plan is technically a lease. Under this plan, you can upgrade much more frequently than any other plan from the other carriers: up to three times a year. You make your monthly payments on the phone as normal, but at absolutely any point, you can walk into a T-Mobile store, hand in your old phone and get a new one. Of course, since this is a lease, there are a few caveats.First, you won’t actually own the device unless you buy it out. After 18 months of the normal payments (the cost of the device, divided by 24 months), you can either return your phone and walk away, or pay the remaining balance (6 months worth) to own it. If you decide to upgrade at any point during this 18 month period, the clock starts over. Also, this only applies to certain phones. This includes flagships like the latest iPhone, Galaxy S 6 Edge, LG G4, and others. T-Mobile has added new handsets since the program’s inception, but it’s not a wide selection. It’s hard to know which phones will be available when you go to upgrade, and it may be harder still to find three phones per year you would even want to upgrade to. Particularly if you’re an iPhone user, since Apple only comes out with a new line of phones once per year. The major downside is that you’re basically throwing away money on the phones you trade in. If you want to use a Note 4 for six months, it will cost roughly $30 per month, for a total of $180. When you trade that phone in, that money’s gone. You have nothing to sell and you’ll start your payments on a new phone all over again. If you’d otherwise resell or reuse your old phones, you’ll be wasting money every time you trade it in.That said, there are still some advantages here. For starters, you can walk away from T-Mobile at absolutely any time. Unlike most carrier’s plans, you’re not required to pay off your phone or fork over a huge fee just to leave. You’ll have to turn in your old phone, but you’re not forced to come up with a huge amount of money on the spot just to switch carriers.Additionally, some people simply may not want to sell their old phones. While buying outright and reselling your devices is a cost-efficient way to stay up to date, it’s also a huge hassle. Your old phones may not sell for much, you have to deal with online stores or selling to friends, and it’s probably best that you keep all the original packaging. If you know you’re not going to do all of that, then you’re not getting value out of your old phones anyway. This lease program can at least keep you up to date, while putting your old phones to better use.Yep, this is still an option. Like AT T, T-Mobile has a GSM network which means it’s easier to find a compatible phone. Additionally, T-Mobile’s service plans are going to cost the same no matter how you buy your phone. Whether you drop $500 for a phone on Amazon, or pay $20.83 every month for two years to T-Mobile, your cell service has a simple monthly cost so you never get confused. With rare exception, T-Mobile’s plans are simple. You just have to pay for your phone. Financing is a straightforward way to do that. Jump! is almost exactly the same as financing, except you pay a premium to give yourself the option of trading it in. Jump! is ideal for anyone who was going to buy phone insurance anyway, particularly if you’re going to buy a phone that might not retain its value long-term. If you decide it’s not worth it to upgrade early and trade in your old handset, you don’t have to. Just keep paying your monthly installments until your phone is paid off, then keep it. You’ll pay a little bit more than you would if you just bought device insurance, but it’s a small enough amount of money to be up to your discretion.Jump! On Demand is geared towards rapid upgraders who also won’t sell or use their old phones. However, the limit on which handsets actually qualify for the plan makes it less attractive. In fairness, the program has only been around for a month, and T-Mobile has added one new phone to the list since then, but it’s not a wonderland of phone hopping forever. Unless you’re hopelessly devoted to Apple or high end Samsung phones, it’s probably best to wait on this plan right now.The bottom line: Like AT T, T-Mobile’s plans are a little confusing, but generally fair. In nearly every situation, you have the option to buy your phone outright if you decide you want to keep it, without paying extra fees. Or you can upgrade early, which isn’t very cost effective, but hey it’s your choice. Only Verizon’s plans are simpler, but that’s also because they don’t have any early upgrade options at all. Sprint’s plans are considerably more complicated and make it much harder to find a decent deal.Currently, Sprint offers a variety of options for getting a new phone. The carrier has announced that it plans to phase out most of its options in favor of leases by the end of 2015, but we’re several days into 2016 and this still hasn’t happened. We’ll cover all of the options that are available now, and update in the future when that plan finally finishes. For now, though, things are confusing as heck. Let’s begin at the beginning.Sprint’s lease option is soon to be the default, so we’ll start there. You can lease a phone from Sprint by paying a certain amount per month for 24 months. It’s unclear exactly how Sprint determines the monthly lease price, but it’s less than the formula other carriers use (total device cost divided by 24). We’ll come back to that in a moment. At the end of your two year lease, you have three options:Turn in your old phone and upgrade: As long as your old phone is in good, working condition, you can turn it in and start a brand new lease.

There’s also a fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard’s space bar, allowing users to unlock the device quickly.

One more thing: The Lumia 640 is a comparable phone and can be had for even less, sometimes in the sub-$50 range — but that’s only if you manage to find one. It also does not ship with Windows 10 Mobile, so you’ll have to do a rather lengthy upgrade process to get it to the latest OS.Best for business

For many travellers, their smartphone is the most useful, if not the only, electronic device they’ll carry. It can replace everything from flashlight to camera, guidebook to diary and more. It’ll also let you stay in touch with loved ones, book flights and accommodation, convert currency and deal with many other of the inevitable tasks that crop up on vacation. There’s a huge difference between devices, however, and price isn’t always a guide to quality. The good news is, though, that no matter how much you have to spend, it’s possible to get a good smartphone to make your trip much easier and more enjoyable. If you’re after a new smartphone for your travels but don’t have a big budget, don’t despair. Budget phones have become a lot better in recent years, and you can now pick up a perfectly-good device for under $250. You won’t get top of the line specifications or amazing camera quality, but if you pick the right phone, it’ll serve you well for even extended trips.Even at this lower price point, you shouldn’t accept anything less than 16GB of storage space, and more is much better. Battery life won’t necessarily be great, but a few budget phones do manage to last a full day. LTE isn’t always included, especially for regions outside wherever you purchase it. Bear that in mind if you really need super-fast cell data.In some ways, Motorola invented the “budget smartphones that don’t suck” category with the first version of the Moto G back in 2013. The company has been at the front of the pack ever since. The fourth iteration doesn’t disappoint, sporting many of the same features you’ll find in phones costing far more, with surprisingly few missteps. LTE support comes as standard, for at least for the region you purchased the device in.The Moto G 4 comes with a 13MP camera that, while it won’t blow you away, is better than almost everything else you find at this price point. Outdoor shots are detailed and have good colour accuracy, but it’s less impressive in low light. Still, the HDR mode fixes many exposure problems without making the picture look artificial, and it even does a decent job of macro shots.Motorola claims the phone has “all-day battery,” whatever that means. The battery size has noticeably increased from the previous model, but then again, so has the screen size and resolution. Unless you’re binge-watching TV shows or playing intensive games to while away a long layover, though, you shouldn’t have to look for a power socket until the end of all but the longest travel days.If you do need to add more juice, a welcome addition with the latest model is fast charging. The “TurboPower” charger adds up to six hours of use in just 15 minutes of charging, via a standard micro-USB port. The phone comes in two capacities, 16GB and 32GB. Given the small price difference between the two, we’d strongly suggest going for the extra storage. There’s also a micro-SD slot that can take anything up to a 128GB card, so you shouldn’t run out of space any time soon.Rarely found in a device this cheap, the Moto G is also water-resistant. Don’t plan to go swimming with it, but rain or a quick dunk in the toilet shouldn’t cause a problem. That’s very reassuring when you’re travelling. With an increase in price comes an increase in expectations. Mid-range smartphones typically fall in the $250-$500 price range. For that kind of money, you should see a significant step up from even the best of the budget range.Cameras need to take good photos, at least outdoors and preferably in more challenging conditions too. Storage space should be at least 32GB, ideally built into the phone. You need to be able to get a full day of moderate to heavy use from the phone, to deal with long travel days away from charging points. While OnePlus is still a relatively new phone manufacturer, it’s been making waves from day one by putting out high-spec phones at low-spec prices. Until now, the biggest problem with the devices has been actually buying one. Supply was very tightly managed, and you needed an invitation to even have the chance of handing over your cash. That’s all changed with the OnePlus 3T — you can now buy it direct from the company, no invite required. That’s fortunate, really, since it’s also the best phone the company has ever made, at a price that makes it impossible to ignore. There’s no doubt about it, the specs of the OnePlus 3T are impressive. With a Snapdragon 821 processor and 6GB of RAM, you get more raw power for your money than most phones priced far higher. Apps open in the blink of an eye, and the phone ranks near the top of benchmark tests. There’s no microSD slot, but with 64GB of storage as standard, that’s hardly a glaring omission. This is one device that isn’t going to be obsolete a year after purchase, even for the most demanding users. The 16MP rear camera on the OnePlus 3T falls into the “good” rather than “great” category, but if most of your shots will be in daylight, you’ll have no complaints. Colours are accurate, details are sharp, and it’s snappy and responsive to use.The only issue — as it is with many phone cameras — is in low light. That’s when you’ll see a noticeable difference between this phone and best of breed cameras like those on Samsung Galaxy S7 or the Google Nexus 5x and 6p. If you’re not super-fussy about your low-light photos or you’re travelling with a dedicated camera, though, you’ll be happy. The front camera is also 16MP, which is far higher than most. How much benefit you’ll get from that once you’ve applied your Instagram filters or Snapchat dog-ears is debatable, really, but it’s there if you care. There’s a non-swappable 3400mAh battery built in, which is as good or better than most other phones this size. As a result, it ranks highly in battery rundown tests, and you’ll be able to get a full day’s use out of it unless you’ve got the screen on for hours.OnePlus has duplicated much of the phone’s power management system in a special “Dash” charger. Why would it do such a thing? To move heat generation away from the phone itself, which means it stays cooler and can keep charging even under heavy use or in hot weather.Depending on how you use and charge your phone, that may or may not be useful, but either way, it also means the phone can go from 0 to 60% in half an hour. Now even the tightest of layovers should give enough time to charge your phone for the rest of the day.Like many other manufacturers, OnePlus has jumped from microUSB to USB-C, with the benefits and pitfalls that go with that. There’s no wireless charging, though. The OnePlus 3T has an attractive aluminium body, which looks good and lets it stand up to more abuse than the plastic versions from previous models, and a 5.5″ 1080p display. The fingerprint scanner is fast and reliable, and there’s also NFC if that’s something you care about. More importantly, the phone comes unlocked and has dual SIM slots. If you want to take advantage of the cheap rates of a local SIM card, while still keeping your home SIM in place to get texts from your bank (or your mum), you can.All in all, this is a hell of a phone for under $450. A few compromises have been made, but none that would stop most people from buying. If you’re looking for an affordable smartphone that is super-fast, has loads of storage, takes good photos most of the time and has travel-friendly features like fast charging and dual SIMs, you’ve found it in the OnePlus 3T.Once you’re paying over $500, you’re in the premium smartphone category. These devices need to have the sleekest designs, best cameras, and ample storage. They have to be fast and reliable, with plenty of useful extra features. Given how good cheaper phones have become, there needs to be a good reason to drop the cash for a high-end version.Samsung’s Galaxy S7 is the latest, and best, in a long line of premium devices from the South Korean manufacturer. It listened to its customers by bringing back much-loved features dropped from the previous model, and the phone has received rave reviews
as a result. There are two variants — the S7, and the larger, pricier S7 Edge. The latter has a fancy, sloped edge on one side that displays news tickers, a clock, various shortcuts and more. It’s somewhat useful, but doesn’t justify the extra cost and bulk of the Edge for travellers.Put simply, the Galaxy S7 is incredibly quick. With 4GB of RAM and a super-fast processor, it tops the charts in both benchmark and real-world testing. You’ll never be waiting for it to load or switch between apps, and it handles the most demanding tasks easily.Storage depends (a lot) on where you buy the phone. In North America and Europe, the S7 is limited to 32GB of internal capacity, while in Asia you can get as much as 128GB onboard. Fortunately, it’s not a huge limitation, as the company decided to reintroduce a micro-SD slot that can handle anything up to 200GB cards. If you’re using more than that, perhaps it’s time to store your entire movie collection somewhere else…The Galaxy range has long had some of the best smartphone cameras, and the S7 is no exception. It’s fantastic for food, macro and low light shots, in a way that most phone cameras aren’t. Outdoor photos are very good as well, especially given the S7 has a wider-angle lens than most. There’s great colour saturation and white balance in almost any conditions. Despite having “just” a 12MP sensor, the camera has a f1.7 lens and larger pixels than usual, so it’s rare to find conditions it can’t handle. One of the criticisms of the previous models was unimpressive battery life, and the company paid attention. The 3000mAh battery in the S7 is nearly 20% larger than the S6. That means longer life and less anxiety about finding a power socket during long layovers. As you’d expect, the phone supports fast charging. It uses the industry-standard Qualcomm approach, so as long as you’re using the included charger, even 30 minutes plugged into the wall will keep you going for several more hours. With its 5.1″ screen, the Galaxy S7 bucks the trend towards massive phones (or at least, leaves it for the 5.5″ Edge model). The display has great colour calibration, with plenty of brightness for viewing in direct sunlight.Samsung decided to bring back water and dust resistance for this model, which is very welcome for travellers. You can leave the S7 in up to five feet of water for half an hour and it’ll keep going strong. While I wouldn’t recommend testing those limits, you should have no problem with rain, water splashes and other liquid spills.Due to the larger battery and extra durability, the phone is actually a little heavier than the previous model, but still easy to hold in your hand. The glass back does make things a little more slippery, however. Given that and the high price tag, a thin rubber case would be a useful addition. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is not a cheap phone, no matter which configuration you buy. If money is no object and you’re not inclined to make compromises, however, it’s the best high-end Android smartphone you can buy right now.

With the engine under the hood, Honda could park the battery under the front seats and two hydrogen tanks under and just behind the rear seats. The remaining real estate is all devoted to human space.

HDMI inputs are a must on a high-end soundbar, required to deliver DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD soundtracks from Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray discs. Philips has 4K passthrough ports (30fps), but the soundbar doesn’t support HDR. Plus the HDMI output is only HDMI 1.4, which is a little disappointing.

The E’s cabin is more luxurious than ever, and it places a huge emphasis on technology. Analog gauges mounted behind a glass panel come standard, but the setup can be replaced by a high-resolution color screen that can be configured to show a wide range of information about the car and its surroundings. A 12.3-inch screen mounted next to the instrument cluster groups the E’s navigation, connectivity, and entertainment functions into a single unit controlled via either voice commands or a controller knob located on the center console. Alternatively, the E is offered with smartphone-like touch-sensitive surfaces built into the spokes of the steering wheel. This industry-first feature makes driving safer because the driver can navigate the infotainment system without taking his or her hands off the wheel.

Here’s the midday recap: shares are trading flat as investors digest the recent rally, with strong gains in Telstra offseting losses in energy stocks. But the ASX is still on track for a weekly gain of more than 2 per cent, its best performance since late November. “It’s the last day of the quarter. The market had a pretty strong rally yesterday and it’s just repositioning today,” said Bill Keenan, general manager equities and researcher at Lonsec. Banking stocks are taking a bit of a breather, with ANZ down 0.7 per cent, following APRA’s announcement of additional measure to cool investor home lending, while the ACCC ruled against banks collectively bargaining with Apple over the use of Apple Pay. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, included in the ACCC report, was up 0.8 per cent. Energy stocks are down after oil prices dipped, with Woodside losing 0.4 per cent and Origin Energy down 0.9 per cent. Among gainers, telecom and utility sectors are up, led by a 1.4 per cent rally in Telstra and 2.2 per cent gains in AGL Energy.

Nokia’s return to the smartphone space is one of the most hotly anticipated landmarks in the industry for many years now. With the firm partnering with HMD and developing Android-based desgins, there’s everything to play for, and many are hopeful it will usher in a new era of prominence for Nokia inside the industry it helped create. So far, however, one key aspect has been missing; a flagship smartphone.Rumours suggest Nokia is indeed prepping a flagship category device, the so-called Nokia 8. However, a report from NokiaPowerUser suggests there may be more than meet’s the eye when it comes to Nokia’s forthcoming plans. We’ve been hearing talk of the Nokia 8 for a while now, as well as the Nokia P1, and there’s plenty of speculation that the two might be the same device. Above all else, it’s unlikely the names have been finalised. However, NPU suggests that as well as a Nokia 8, there will be a Nokia 7, and both will reportedly feature a new metal unibody design with ultra-thin display bezels. Whats more, both will allegedly run on the as-yet unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 CPU (the successor the the SD 652 and 653 line). Importantly, that’s NOT the Snapdragon 835 Nokia’s flagship is rumoured to come with. We’re left with a possible number of scenarios, perhaps the Nokia 7 and Nokia 8 will be distinct handsets from the Nokia P1 flagship, for example. Perhaps the Nokia P1 will be the Nokia 9?The Nokia 8 outlined in NPU’s report, flagship or not, will sport a QHD display resolution, while the Nokia 7 will have a 1080p screen instead. It’s claimed the duo may share the same rear camera configuration, which will allegedly be different from what we’ve seen on Nokia’s Android fleet so far, with bigger sensors to boot. Fingerprint scanners and fast charging are also tipped for both, while the Nokia 8 may have Carl Ziess optics, in spite of recent rumours suggesting otherwise.Nokia’s MWC 2017 launch campaign was pretty impressive. The company announced a trio of Android phones – the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 – which are designed exclusively to cause massive ripples in the mid-range bracket of the mobile marketplace. This sector – the sub-£250 bracket – is a very lucrative market for phone makers, though competition is fierce. Brands like the Moto G line and other equally impressive mid-range Android phones, battle for supremacy and constantly redefine what constitutes a good “affordable Android phone”.Now the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 are present and accounted for, all eyes are on what Nokia’s doing for its BIG, flagship release – the Nokia 8 (which is apparently codenamed the Nokia P1, at present).Word on the street suggests the Nokia 8 will arrive in June. But those of you looking for a cheap handset will be disappointed; the Nokia 8 will likely retail for around $779 for the 128GB model and $900 for the 256GB one.The Nokia 8 is designed to go head to head with the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Apple’s incoming iPhone 8. In this respect, the price makes sense. Plus, HMD has a bunch of other, cheaper options for those after a cheaper handset. This will be Nokia’s flagship handset and it is expected to feature similar specs to what we’ll see inside the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8, meaning QHD displays and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 CPUs paired with 4-6GB of RAM.PureView imaging and Carl Zeiss optics WILL NOT feature inside this phone. Microsoft still owns the former and Nokia has confirmed the latter will not be appearing on this year’s phones already via Twitter. The handset, according to the source, will be a metal unibody affair that’ll be available in two distinct sizes just like iPhones, Pixels and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 range. The Nokia 8, however, at just over €500 is decidedly cheaper and this could be where Nokia makes A LOT of new friends in 2017.However, a new report on March 7 claims the Nokia flagship will arrive in June 2017, in two size variants, and will be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. The word comes via Chinese source MyDrivers and is corroborated by sources on Twitter. The report adds that the specs should generally be similar, if not identical, between the two sizes, and suggests that there may be options for 4GB or 6GB of RAM. It also states we’ll see metal unibody design, at least one of the devices with a dual-camera (but NO PureView or Carl Zeiss branding) clocking at least 23MP.One area where Nokia could potentially do A LOT of damage to Samsung and Apple is price. Samsung and Apple’s flagships this year are going to be VERY expensive – like $1000-expensive. And that price, for many, will simply be too much to spend on a phone. The Nokia P1 – or Nokia 8, or whatever it is called – is widely believed to feature very similar spec to the Galaxy S8, as detailed below, however, one area where it could REALLY do the most for consumers is price.Should HMD retail this phone for £500, or thereabouts, it will make it some £300-£400 cheaper than both the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8, perhaps even more, as prices for these new phones are not yet concrete – they could cost even more.If HMD goes this route, and I believe it will, it will be similar to what OnePlus did when it entered the fray: take on the established players by competing on price and value for money. To date, HMD’s releases have been very price-aggressive and I don’t see this changing with the Nokia P1.In terms of the aesthetic, very little is known about the Nokia P1, however, we have already seen the Nokia 6 unveiled with a design language that does look familiar to fans of Nokia’s early Windows Phone days; clean, minimalist, quasi-industrial with a fairly squared-off shape. It’s expected that the Nokia P1 will look similar to keep things “on brand,” so to speak, though of course it should be more refined as a higher-end model. Helping with this “premium” aesthetic will be a metal unibody build, according to rumours and leaks, topped with Gorilla Glass 5 reinforcement to the 5.3in display panel; as per the Nokia 6, the display bezels will likely be very narrow and the phone will probably feature a high screen-to-body ratio. This is what I am most interested in – Nokia’s iconic design. Will the company still have what it takes to take on the big players in the space? I miss the days of the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia Lumia 1520. I genuinely hope Nokia can bring something new to the table in this regard. Something different, unique and typically “Nokia”.Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global said: “We have set ourselves a mission to deliver the best possible smartphone experience, with a beautiful premium design touch, to everyone, at every price point. By building on true Nokia phone hallmarks of leading design and materials, an obsessive focus on the latest technology and solving real-life issues, we believe we have a unique proposition for consumers. The Nokia 6 marks the first step on our journey, with more to come in 2017.”Back in the day, Nokia was known for its camera prowess; it produced some of the best smartphone imaging hardware available on the market. A key component of that was its cooperation with Carl Zeiss for optics components, and that’s something that is set to continue on the Nokia P1.There have been a lot of rumours surrounding the Nokia flagship but we do know it’ll pack a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. The most likely candidate is the Snapdragon 835 as the lead model at the moment, and there have been a few leaks which support this idea. The one spanner in the works is the rumour that Samsung has hogged all the supply of S835 chips, a situation that isn’t expected to change until after April, but if the Nokia P1 doesn’t hit the market until after that month it may not be an issue. In terms of other hardware, it’s rumoured the Nokia P1 will feature a physical Home key below the display, fitted with an integrated fingerprint scanner for biometric security and payment applications. We know Nokia has fully embraced Google’s Android operating system for all its forthcoming phones, so it’s a given that the Nokia P1 will use this
OS. Persistent rumours have strongly suggested it will run the “latest” build of Android, which is the current Nougat build. We don’t know if that means version 7.0 as the base version, or one of the subsequent updates (7.1.1 or the current in-testing update 7.1.2, which may be ready by the time the phone arrives). Either way it will enjoy a host of brand new Android features, including advanced support for split-screen, multi-window multitasking, better performance optimisations, MUCH better battery life thanks to Google’s further development of Doze and the like, and a bunch of new security features.JIT compiler: The new JIT compiler improves runtime device performance, reduces the amount of storage space required for apps and makes app and system updates much faster.

Can adjust color temperature to make it less unnaturally blueBehind the Nippon Electric Glass-protected display glass is a 5.2-inch screen with an LCD that remains solid at 1080p. It doesn’t need a Quad HD resolution to stay competitive at this size. It’s bright enough to use outdoors in sunlight and, sliding the brightness slider all the way down, the screen gets so dim that menus are barely visible. That’s great if you’re in a pinch for battery life. There’s just one complaint: we found ourselves having to manually adjust that brightness slider one too many times when reviewing the Honor 8. The auto-brightness didn’t kick in right away. There’s no way to fix the ambient light sensor, be we did find a remedy for the phone’s unusually saturated, blue screen, as if this was the anti-Night Shift mode phone.Huawei includes a number of software tweaks and among them is the ability to finely adjust the color temperature. It’s a relief if your eyes begins to strain. Otherwise, everything looks extra white, like Huawei applied Crest White Strips to give the display an unnatural teeth whitening glow.

The smartphones featured here have the best camera performance among the dozens of devices in our cell phone ratings. They might not match the image quality of an SLR or even the top point-and-shoots, but they can produce great photos in many shooting situations. And you can’t beat the best smartphone cameras for portability and sharing options. These days, you can count on smartphones to have high-resolution sensors (12 megapixels or more) to produce sharp cropped or enlarged prints. They have optical image stabilizers to help minimize blurriness from a shaky hand. And they can capture spur-of-the-moment video with high-definition clarity, too.One new trend is for phones to include two rear-mounted cameras (in addition to the selfie camera on the front). One camera handles most shots while the other works either as a zoom or a wide-angle lens. Some phones use both cameras working together to produce stylish effects such as a blurred background (what photographers call a bokeh effect). This seems like a very promising development. So far, however, our testing indicates that secondary cameras don’t do much to improve image or video quality overall. That’s why, for now, we only score the performance of the phones’ main cameras. The images and videos the best smartphone cameras take are relatively large, up to 5 megabytes per still image and several hundred megabytes per minute for videos. If the smartphone you fancy accepts microSD memory cards, you’ve got it made. Cards with 64GB of storage are easy to install and cost as little as $20 at most retailers. If you’re thinking of buying a phone that lacks this advantage, consider a model with at least 64GB of internal storage. When we took an up-close look at our ratings, these eight phones rose to the top for camera quality. They appear in performance order, starting with the best performer in our testing:The Samsung Galaxies, Motorola, and Sony models aced our still-image-quality tests, which evaluate resolution, dynamic range, color accuracy, and visual noise. The Motorola excelled at taking low-light shots and delivered outstanding performance for dynamic range (the difference between the lightest light and darkest dark that can be seen in a photo). However, the dynamic range performance of the other cameras was underwhelming. The Sony’s 15.9-megapixel front-facing (or selfie) camera has about twice the resolution of its competitors in our test. That’s enough to capture almost every nook and cranny of your hopefully smiling face. All of these smartphones took videos good enough to upload to YouTube or Facebook. The Sony, Motorola, and both Samsungs took very good HD (1080p) video—the format most people use—under daylight, indoor, and low-light conditions. All of these smartphones, with the exception of the Sony, can record at a resolution high enough to feed an Ultra HD TV.Rank

The iSine 10 costs $400 or £400 (the US price translates to about AU$525). It has an open-back design, so it not only lets some sound in but leaks it out, too. In other words, this probably isn’t the best headphone to use in an open office environment or walking the streets of a big city.

In regard to internet, it was also supposed to be available as of December 2, 2016, but it is rolling out very slowly. So far only four companies have been approved to provide Lifeline Broadband and as far as we can tell only one is actually offering it at this point. Check out the free government cell phone companies and plans in your state, because many of them have begun offering limited data plans. Here’s where you can find all those companies in your state:

Xiaomi will reportedly launch the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 toting Redmi Note 4 in India at around mid-January. This will reportedly be the Qualcomm-based version of the MediaTek Helio X20 powered Redmi Note 4 that was launched in China in August 2016. Xiaomi isn’t permitted to sell its MediaTek-based devices in India, due to an ongoing legal tussle with Ericsson. Hence, the need of a Qualcomm version. Rest of the specifications are likely to remain the same. Xiaomi’s original Redmi Note 4 has a full-metal unibody and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It comes with a 5.5-inch FullHD IPS display with a 1080p resolution and curved 2.5D glass. The phone is backed by a 4,100mAh battery.

I noticed on Verizon’s website, they have a new product TravelPass. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like you can use your home plan while away, using your normal allotment of talk minutes, texts, data for a daily surcharge. $2 per 24-hour period (only when you use it) in Mexico/Canada, and $10 per 24-hour period (only when you use it) in many other countries. For the short, occasional trip it might be a good option.

With various upgrades including a waterproof design, great cameras and stock Android, the new Moto G 2015 is a great affordable phone. The device is still a bit chunky and it’s a shame to see the stereo speakers gone. It’s worth opting for the model with 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. Now with a price cut to £149, the Moto G 3rd-gen is the best budget phone you can buy.

“seem to only want to cater for the former.” – most phone manufacturers have priorities to meet, and for some successful ones, user-centered design trumps feature showboating.

Thank you for your detailed question. In the wireless industry, if you call and cancel your service without porting the number out, you are at a big risk of losing your number. When you cancel your plan, they can take your number with the service. It happens time and time again. It creates a huge problem and takes a long time to fix. When you just port your number out, your service is automatically cancelled. This is how the industry standard works now a days. I have done this with four carriers and all have been flawless.

The smartphone, after all, is the key to unfettered access to the internet and the many benefits and dangers that come with it. But unlike driving a car, which is legal in some states starting at the age of 16, there is no legal guideline for a parent to determine when a child may be ready for a smartphone.

Remember to get signature confirmation if you sell something over $250 to protect yourself. Regular tracking isn’t enough on items over $250. Items you sell lower than that make sure you buy tracking to protect yourself from the “I never received it” type people. That’s never happened to me but it could and without tracking or signature confirmation ebay/paypal will side with the buyer.

Would rather have Google do it than China.

China’s latest hot smartphone maker, the privately-held Huawei, released a barebones versions of earnings this week. Sales jumped 40% to 246 billion yuan (about $39 billion) in the first half of the year, a healthy increase given worldwide smartphone sales have flatlined compared to last year.

Smartphones are extensions of ourselves. Some people fully embrace this while others prefer the olden days before the technology takeover. However, whether or not you are secretly afraid that computers will inherit the earth, you’ve got to appreciate some of our smartphones’ finer aspects, including apps, which make our lives a little bit easier.Wondering when and where to find the next bus or streetcar? Searching for a tour guide? Or perhaps you’ve been separated from your friends at a crowded festival, bar, or music club. Is it going to rain? Is that fancy building historically significant? Hey, is that Professor Longhair’s house? In nearly any situation in New Orleans, there’s an app for dat:The “Jazz Houses: Where They Lived” app allows users to explore the history and tradition of New Orleans jazz musicians through an exploration of the homes in which these people lived. The app provides options to explore by artist, neighborhood, or – true to its preservation roots – significant houses that are in jeopardy of vanishing forever. Each category has a map with pins of sites notable to jazz history, and many artists’ pages feature a music clip. It is these music clips, paired with mostly black-and-white photographs of jazz musicians, their homes, and other related images and maps, that enliven the history of New Orleans jazz. So go ahead, treat yourself to some timeless musical history. We’ve all been there: out, about, when suddenly it hits us. Where is the bathroom? Airpnp is a mobile app that helps users find nearby bathrooms. Not surprisingly, this app’s founders hail from New Orleans where this is an ever-present issue – especially during Mardi Gras. The app features a map with pins on various bathrooms with prices, if applicable. After you go, you can even rate your experience. What’s more is that the app isn’t just for New Orleans. It can help you locate a latrine when in need in cities across the globe. The days of holding it (or worse) are over.If you have ever been caught in a sudden New Orleans rainstorm, perhaps taking shelter under an overhang in the French Quarter or refuge in a bar, this app is about to change the way you interact with the weather. Dark Sky can tell you the forecast for your exact location literally down to the minute. It can advise you that rain is coming in, say, 12 minutes, as well as predicting weather within the coming hours or days. Users can also monitor other helpful weather conditions like wind speed and humidity levels for their exact location. Especially in New Orleans, where it can be pouring rain in one neighborhood but sunny in another, Dark Sky is your best bet to navigate the weather. For those times where you find yourself surrounded by a crowd of people you don’t know wearing funny clothes, especially at major events like Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest (or even on an average night out), Glympse can be your lifeline. The app uses GPS to help you locate your friends, and help them locate you. This is also a great app to use if you are waiting for a friend at a restaurant or another situation where you want to know the ETA of someone you are expecting. Yes, your GPS location will be floating around on the interwebs, but with Glympse, you only share it with those you trust for a predetermined length of time. Another bonus to the app is that you can share your location with someone who doesn’t even have the app.Though not technically an app, GoNOLA’s mobile site is a must-have for both locals and tourists. Visit on your mobile phone to find a website fully optimized for mobile devices. Additionally, it uses responsive design so no matter the size of your phone, computer, or tablet, the website will alter its dimensions for a perfect fit. The website features easy to use sections for “Eat Drink,” “See Do,” “Music,” and “Coming Up,” which directs users to the most current articles on what is going on in New Orleans. Stay in the know by bookmarking the mobile site on your device. The New Orleans Historical app contains a wealth of knowledge about local history, places, and more. You can do a quick search for particular items that tickle your fancy, such as “Desire streetcar,” or you can follow one of the app’s mobile tours: the “New Orleans Food History” tour provides a background on lesser known tidbits of local culture ranging from pralines and street food vendors to the po-boy; and the “Audubon Park: 1884 Cotton Centennial Exposition” tour highlights the 1884 World’s Fair which was held at what is today Audubon Park. One of the app’s most useful components is the map that displays pins of places of historical interest which can be used if you find yourself somewhere in town wanting to know about a particular place.Though a little patience is a requirement when taking the bus or streetcar in New Orleans, it is worth leaving the car behind to spend time looking out the window. Transit Tracker by WDSU is, to me, the most straightforward local transit app to use, though there are several others out there as well. It was designed using the Regional Transit Authority’s own real-time GPS data, something essential to a seamless transit experience, and it updates every 30 seconds. To track your desired bus or streetcar, all you need to do is select the “Routes” button at the bottom of the screen and scroll through to select your line. Then hit “Track,” and the map will immediately show where your ride is and the direction it is heading. If you don’t use the WWL Mardi Gras Parade Tracker during Mardi Gras, your life is about to get a whole lot better. The app tracks more than 50 of Carnival season’s biggest and best parades from Krewe du Vieux to Rex on Mardi Gras day. It also provides parade schedules, routes, and real-time GPS locations for the parades to help you plan your season. A quick link to @mardigrasparadetrack also helps users stay informed. How many days until Twelfth Night now?Maybe you read the headline and came for the food only to find apps of the technological variety. Or maybe all this tech talk has you hungry, which would be a little weird but not unheard of. Here, a few of our favorite edible apps.

G.E., This update comes at a great time for me and my wife. We are now retired, have had iphones (mostly because I am Apple obsessed)for some time. We seldom use the phones. We probably have thousands of roll-over minutes. Being retired we’re looking to retain our wealth by getting rid of the frivolous things we that we spend money on. I’ve been looking around at the options. Consumer Cellular seems like a contender. We’re considering Tracfone more closey especially since reading this review. Can you recommend a phone to choose for Tracphone? We need just calling and texting for the most part. Some of the extras would be nice but much more than we need. Looking for low cost but effective.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is one of the largest high-tech trade shows in the world and focuses entirely on technological innovation in consumer electronics. It takes place every January in Las Vegas and has been running now for over 40 years. This year it lasts from January 5-8.This event brings together professionals, journalists and individual tech aficionados. Nearly 200,000 square meters of exhibition space is available! Last year, over 3,600 exhibitors from over 140 countries attended the conference.Obviously, classic Android devices are being revealed: smartphones, tablets and some smartwatches. Having said that, more futuristic items are also joining in the festivities this year: drones, connected devices (for the smart home), connected cars, connected accessories (notably Bluetooth audio equipment), AI personal assistants, 3D printers, new wearables for health and sleep tracking, plus new VR accessories. The new ZenFone 3 Zoom is built for photography enthusiasts who need a long lasting battery. The phone will come with a very large 5,000 mAh battery. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 635 processor. The 5.5-inch smartphone will have a dual camera, both with 12 MP. Its SuperPixel technology will give it 2.5x more light sensitivity than the iPhone 7 Plus, and 10x more than an average smartphone. The large battery will allow for 6.4 hours of 4K UHD video capture on one charge. The full specs are available here. This smartphone will combine Google’s AR and VR technologies, Tango and Daydream. Many had been waiting on Google’s Tango technology for so long the idea was almost buried before being dredged up by the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. Just as a reminder, this technology allows a different visualization of space through a smartphone, analyzing distances and most notably focusing on the concept of augmented reality. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor plus 8 GB of RAM and it will have a Tri-Cam system. The three cameras will be one 23 MP main camera, plus a motion tracking camera and a depth-sensing camera. The 5.7-inch WQHD Super AMOLED display with a five magnet speaker will make Daydream VR apps come to life.Yes, that’s right, Blackberry is still around. The long awaited “Mercury” smartphone was announced at CES. The device is a product of Alcatel’s parent company, TCL, and Blackberry’s new formal relationship. The smartphone will feature a Blackberry-style keyboard but we don’t know much since the announcement was light on details. There is a fingerprint sensor built into the space bar, and it has capacitive touch technology for scrolling. It will run Nougat, which is a pleasant surprise. The outside of the phone will be rubber and metal. For now, the screen size, camera specs, processor, RAM, battery size, price and release date are unknown. Now that they’ve begun hyping the phone up at CES, we’re hoping to hear more at the forthcoming MWC.Huawei announced the international release of the Honor 6X, previously only available in China. While the smartphone with its dual rear-facing camera and highly competitive $250 price make the phone very attractive, we’ll let you know how the Honor 6X coped in everyday usage with our full review:HTC has landed on both feet in the VR domain with the HTC Vive. They confirmed that they didn’t reveal a second generation of the Vive, but rather they are going to expand ecosystem offerings for the device, so we can expect new accessories and virtual reality content from the manufacturer. The new Vive Tracker is a tiny device that can attach to any item to turn it into a VR controller. You could attach it to something like a baseball bat to fight zombies in a VR game, for example. This will allow for a limitless range of new “controllers” for the HTC Vive.We may not be getting much apart from the Mate 9 with the Alexa AI, but Huawei did give us a glimpse of the future of the company. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, delivered a keynote address in which he covered the company’s global vision and plans for the future of mobile, which will include AI, VR, and connected technologies. The keynote focused on the concept of the “intelligent phone” – which goes beyond the capabilities of a smartphone by incorporating more in-depth AI and other functionalities like air and taste sensors, robotics, smart touch, local decision making and deep learning – in order to make the device the control hub of several smart devices’ platforms (for the home, car, office, health and more).Lenovo is bringing us an Amazon Alexa-powered smart speaker. The device will be available for $129, and there will be a Harman Kardon premium audio version for $50 more. At $129, this device is cheaper than the Amazon Echo, and even looks like the Echo too.Lenovo’s first try at a VR headset comes in the form of a prototype headset on display at CES that works with Microsoft’s Windows Holographic platform. The $300-400 device sits on the head and dangles in front of the user’s eyes. It has two 1,440 x 1,440 OLED panels; higher res than both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. In addition to the holographic (optical projection) mode, there will also be two cameras in the front for mixed reality applications. The LG G6 is expected to debut at MWC in the very near future, but we still have some news on the phone from CES. LG said they will be ditching the modular design of the LG G5, which wasn’t exactly a splash hit due to its clunky implementation.LG has been present at CES since its beginning, and though the Korean manufacturer was at this year’s show, they didn’t launch anything truly amazing. In fact, the only interesting thing about the phones they’ve launched at CES is the removable battery.LG has announced five uninspiring new phones at CES: the Stylo 3 (Stylus 3 outside of the US), and four fresh K series phones (K10, K8, K4 and K3). The mid-range Stylo 3 is the most intriguing of the group. The 1.8mm diameter fiber-tip stylus pen is meant to “provide the feel and feedback of an actual pen when writing on the screen.” It has a large 5.7-inch screen with 3 GB of RAM and an octa-core processor. It will have 13 MP (rear) and 8 MP (front) cameras, and be available in two colors: Metallic Titan and Pink Gold. The four K series phones will come in a range of sizes: 5.3 inches (K10), 5 inches (K8 and K4), and 4.5 inches (K3). The K10 offers the best specs with a fingerprint scanner, wide-angle 5 MP front camera and a 13 MP rear camera from the G series flagships. The K8 and K4 share a 5-inch in-cell touchscreen, but the K8’s is HD while the K4’s is FWVGA. The K3’s screen is just a tiny 4.5 inch FWVGA display. The cameras are a main differentiator between the three smaller models. The K8’s cameras have 13 and 5 MP, the K4 has 5 and 5 MP, while the K3 has a deeply unimpressive 5 and 2 MP. The only exciting thing about any of these phones is the removable battery. How LG plans on being competitive in this space is a mystery, but they’ve unveiled the Hub Robot at CES on January 4. The cutesy Hub Robot and Hub Robot Mini will be a voice activated personal assistant which can control smart home devices with the LG AI, just like Amazon Echo or Google Home, but with animated eyes (for some undiscernable reason).LG’s new smart refrigerator has the WebOS operating system and is integrated with Amazon’s Alexa. With the smart fridge you can use voice commands to order groceries, look up recipes, leave notes for your family, and keep track of expiration dates on foods. In addition to Alexa voice controls, it of course has a giant touchscreen. We don’t yet know the how expensive it will be or when it will be released, so it’s tough to know when this cool but slightly absurd connected appliance will make its way to homes near you.Samsung didn’t bring much to the table in terms of smartphones for CES. Still no news on the cause of the Note 7 debacle, but the press conference was kicked off with an acknowledgement of the company’s “challenging year.” Just prior to CES the company revealed some new members of its A series of phones for 2017. See our full article on the 2017 Galaxy A5 and A3 models for all the details.Samsung a
nnounced some new QLED TVs, not to be confused with the same display tech as LG’s OLED ones. QLED is an improvement upon Samsung’s quantum dot technology for its LED TVs. The 75-inch Q8C QLED TV will have 100 percent color volume that’s sure to please consumers.Samsung also unveiled its very first gaming laptop, the 15 and 17-inch Samsung Notebook Odyssey. More details on the 17-inch are coming later in Q1 or Q2, but we know that the 15-inch version will have Intel’s 7th-generation Core i7 processor, 32 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and HDD dual storage, plus a solid NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card.Sony’s A1E OLED TV was the star of the press conference. Oddly enough, this device has no speakers. The sound we’re told by Sony President Kazuo Hirai comes from vibrations in the screen, which is a pretty cool innovation. The OLED display market in the US is no longer cornered by LG, with this new TV coming from Sony. There were also two LED TVs revealed, and a Blu-Ray player in addition to several audio products. Apart from the OLED TV though, the other big new thing from Sony was their VPL-VZ1000ES short throw projector. It can project a 100 inch image from six inches away! It’s a very cool gadget, but don’t get your hopes up if you’re thinking of buying one already: the price tag is $25,000.Xiaomi’s first visit to CES wasn’t their grand entrance to the US market. They revealed a white version of the Mi Mix, which is currently only available in black. They also showed off a modular 4K TV, the Mi TV 4, and a router, the Mi Router HD. Any of these devices could have been appealing to the US, or even global, market. But, Xiaomi chose not to release any of them outside of China. Maybe next time, folks. The affordable 5.5-inch Blade V8 Pro is the first of the Blade series to be released in the US, and it has a dual camera setup. Both rear cameras are 13 MP, with an 8 MP front camera. The other specs are decent, with a Snapdragon 625, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal expandable storage. It’s unlocked across all US networks and has dual SIM. It’s on sale as of January 18 for $229.98 from, B H Photo, and Newegg. The Hawkeye smartphone is the result of ZTE crowdsourcing their fans’ desires for a smartphone, and making it a reality through Kickstarter. You can pre-order the device for $199, and see the full Kickstarter page here. It features and eye-tracking sensor to scroll through pages based on your eye movements and a self-adhesive back so it can be mounted on any surface.Qualcomm is one of the most well-known processor manufacturers. In 2016, a good number of flagships proudly sported their Snapdragon 820 because it worked so well, with only Huawei and Samsung (in its European version) opting to use their own in-house material. After the official presentation of the Snapdragon 835 at CES 2017, we have all the technical specs for the new smartphone processor that will power the top Android smartphones of 2017. It will blow you away. It is faster, uses less battery power, recharges the battery more quickly, promises better image processing and provides a more fun experience with VR accessories. Check out the incredible specs in our full article:We reported recently on the death of smartwatches, but it seems that Google is interested in reviving them with Android Wear 2.0. Manufacturers will reveal new devices with Android Wear 2.0 as early as January at CES, according to Jeff Chang, the product manager of Android Wear at Google. The Verge reports that Google is “committed to supporting and promoting these launches in order to help build awareness in a consumer climate that is becoming increasingly adverse to smartwatches and wearables in general”. Several Fossil Group brands have confirmed that they will be at CES presenting new wearables, including Diesel, Michael Kors, Skagen, Emporio Armani and, of course, Fossil. This is a hell of an article. Too good and really very nicely written. Things have become clearer to me now after reading this as now I know what things we would expect in 2017.As a Vegas resident, I don’t feel smartphone manufacturers are interested in debuting new devices …. but they do continue to push themselves into the US Market, so I look forward to seeing ZTE, Huawei, Xaomi, OnePlus / Oppo in small booths at CES Lenovo is blowijg it with Motorola (never again) Asus fucked me over wirh the Zenfone 2 (never again)I am looking forward to see if there is anything new on the modular phone cases scene. The phone manufacturers became dull after Google cut off the Ara project :)HTC and Lg have really got to Upgrade there phones in 2017 or Samsung Apple will still Dominate the Mobile Market, the Android phone producers already know the Apple is Changing there design of there iPhone 8 phones,LG or Samsung might be the First to offer Flexible screen phones as we always see prototypes of these phones but none on offer yet,Bezeless screen phones seem to be on there way,but it not just phones we want to see,its New Types of Batteries we All want that can Last Longer and not OverheatIt would not surprise me one bit to see Huawei overtake LG and HTC completely. LG desperately needs a new design department and HTC still hasn’t gotten advertising right.

These plans closely resemble postpaid monthly plans like the ones covered in our report on cell phone plans. You are charged a set amount each month and receive an allotment of minutes, talk and data. Plans with unlimited talk and text are commonplace, as are data plans to meet the needs of all types of users, including some unlimited plans, albeit with caps that limit the amount of high-speed (LTE) data you can use per billing cycle.

Although they offer good value, BlackBerries aren’t cheap. The Priv, for instance, can cost more than the equivalent iPhone – and that is expensive. App support isn’t great, either, so your BlackBerry is unlikely to seamlessly integrate with your choice of cloud provider.

Endurance and performance are things that all drones should have, but most don’t. This is why DJI gave the Mavic Pro over 4 miles of range and over 21 minutes of flight time (tested by the MyFirstDrone team), and a top speed of 40MPH. These features are perfect for people who like to push their drones as far as they can. If you do lose signal while flying, the Mavic will go into return-to-home mode and avoid obstacles while it comes back to you.

The two-year process that will end with Britain exiting the EU was triggered on Wednesday but the more immediate impact has been a collapse in the pound since the June 2016 referendum.

I’m using the Eachine Racer 250 as an example, but there are a lot of cheap ready-to-fly racing drones out there in this price range, and the story is always the same. They all use the cheapest components possible, cutting corners with the design whenever they can. Quality control can also be a big issue, but the main reason why I wouldn’t recommend these kinds of drones is because they just aren’t designed to grow. You probably won’t be using the cheap controllers, battery chargers and FPV gear that come with these kits on future drone builds, so you’re basically throwing away money if you plan on upgrading.

If reading all this news has gotten you suitably enthused over the prospect of Chinese smartphone ownership, then pay close attention. Currently there aren’t any major UK suppliers of Chinese smartphones, so your options are limited to imports. The businesses which import, all of which are listed below, are a mixture of China, America and Europe (with one in the UK) based warehouses which offer some, if not all, of the phones you might be looking for. It’s always worth pointing out however that your purchase may be subject to import duty, and any attempt not to pay that duty will result in a fine or your purchase being withheld. If the website advertises a European warehouse though you’ll likely be fine, as EU to UK sales don’t pay import duty – just another perk of EU membership. So, without further delay, our guide to the websites you should be using to buy your Chinese smartphone. An old favourite amongst the novelty gift and phone accessory market (seriously, there’s some great stuff on Deal Extreme), Deal Extreme are also pretty fantastic at selling you mobile phones. Lots of manufacturers are covered in their range and payment is quick and easy, with completely free delivery to the UK. Personally, I’ve used DX four times so far and each time the product has arrived safely and promptly, though your own experience will vary and I promise absolutely nothing. DX currently have a 7.0 rating on TrustPilot, making them a rather solid option for the UK based smartphone buyer.BangGood are currently sitting on a rather impressive 8.6 rating on TrustPilot, making them the best regarded retailer in this list. They also have one of the most varied stockists in the ecommerce world, with almost every Chinese smartphone worth mentioning. Delivery is free to the UK and prices are consistent with other retailers, making it an excellent choice for just about anybody. UPDATE: Since originally writing this I’ve had some personal experience with BangGood, who delivered my Mi Band within two weeks, but personal mileage will vary.Merimobiles currently have a 8.4 rating on TrustPilot, and that should tell you all you need to know about the Hong Kong based electronics company. Something of a Makkah for customers looking for the latest in Chinese smartphone gear, MeriMobiles have deals on almost every phone you could wish for, along with very reasonable prices and free worldwide shipping. You’ll even find products like the Xiaomi Mi Band for £14 delivered, which represents only a small price bump from its actual RRP. All major cards are accepted as it PayPal, so there’s really no reason not to purchase the phone of your dreams.AliExpress is the consumer focused end of the worlds biggest eCommerce website, Alibaba. Think of it as a Chinese version of Amazon, they stock pretty much everything and offer comprehensive 24/7 customer service. They don’t stock any items themselves, but instead act as a front for sellers, but unlike many other companies they’ll side with the buyer in case there’s a dispute.Given the name, you’d be forgiven for assuming that XiaomiShop is the official outlet for Xiaomi products in the West. Well, not quite, but it is an excellent place to shop for Xiaomi products like the Mi3, Mi4, Mi Band, Redmi 1s and many more, some of which are available from their EU warehouse, which means no import duty and faster shipping, something of a win/win for the smartphone buyer on a budget. I can’t personally vouch for the effectiveness nor legitimacy of XiaomiShop’s claims, so this is one we’ll throw out to our community – have you tried XiaomiShop? Got any advice? Share it below!UPDATE: XiaomiShop were threatened with a lawsuit from Xiaomi for using their name, so they changed their name to HonorBuy and stole the Best Buy logo instead, which is just hilarious.Got some bitcoins burning a hole in your hard drive? Well, FastTech is the website for you. Most items have plenty of reviews in English and though their focus is on the eCig market, you can still find plenty of mobile phones on there too. If PayPal is more your speed, they accept that too.Amazon hardly need an introduction, but I’m going to give them one anyway. Amazon sell everything. Like, everything. That includes, unsurprisingly, Chinese smartphones from almost every manufacturer. The issue for buyers is that many of these listings come from third parties who can’t be verified to see if their product is the real deal. As such, it’s a bit of a wild west and will likely require a little bit of careful thought and digging before you pull the trigger on your big purchase. When you do though, Amazon offer amazing customer service and have a grat returns policy, so you should see your money treated with respect.Focalprice is another website in the style of Deal Extreme, which is to say it’s something of a bazaar that also carried Chinese smartphones. There’s free shipping on everything and great prices across the board, but the website carries a 6.7 rating on TrustPilot so exercise caution when buying from them, lest you end up with something you didn’t want.MobiCity are the only retailer on this list with a listing, and are listed under ‘MobiCity UK Limited’, which inspires some confidence into the legitmacy of that claim. They’re also the proud owner of a 7.0 rating on TrustPilot, making them quite well regarded. Prices tend to be higher than the other websites but you are buying from a UK company, so something has to give somewhere and stock seems very good, so there’s a high probability of finding something that you want. I haven’t personally tried MobiCity, so do you homework before purchasing from them.Another bazaar style website, DinoDirect seem content to sell you pretty much anything. They do have one distinct advantage though in the fact that they accept PayPal, for added security in your purchase. From experience, their customer service is fast and fair, plus they sell some of the more obscure manufacturers, if that’s your thing.I’ve listed GearBest here because it’s often highly recommended from buyers, and for good reason. They’ve often got the cheapest prices on big ticket items like smartphones, but some customers have complained about longer than average postage times.PandaWill are unique in offering import tax and VAT insurance if your order is stopped at the border, and for an added 10% on your order, they’ll issue you a full refund on the important tax VAT if you show them the customs slip. It’s up to you to decide whether that’s worth it, but it is an option that offer. They also accept payment through Skrill and PayPal, if you’d prefer to pay that way.

| 08 May 17 You’ve probably heard of brands such as Huawei/Honor, ZTE and Lenovo, although you might not be aware that the latter makes phones as well as laptops. Xiaomi, too, is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, and is known as China’s Apple. Also see:Best kids’ phones 2017The majority of Chinese phones we’ve reviewed have been dual-SIM dual-standby. We’ve found this to be a standard feature of Chinese phones at any price point. However, in the case of Huawei/Honor phones, which are among those that are officially sold in the UK, the UK variant is often not dual-SIM. You should also check whether the second SIM slot is in addition to or replacing the phone’s microSD slot. Also see: Best dual-SIM phones 2017 and dual-SIM buying advice.4G is a common feature even at the lower price points. An increasing number of phones will support 4G on both SIM slots, but dual-standby phones will ask you to select one or the other for data. And while we’re used to seeing phones that standardise on nano- or Micro-SIM, Chinese phones can occasionally still feature full-size SIM slots (though this is now becoming much less common). Of course, you can pick up an adaptor from somewhere like Amazon for as little as a pound. Also see: What is 4G? Complete guide to 4G.The fact that a Chinese phone supports 4G doesn’t necessarily mean it will work on your UK network, mind. Always check a phone’s frequency bands before purchase. In the UK we use LTE bands 3, 7 and 20, or look for 800-, 1800- and 2600MHz. EE operates on all three, Three on 800- and 1800MHz, O2 on 800MHz, and Vodafone on 800- and 2600MHz. Also see: How to tell if a phone is supported by your mobile network.MediaTek processors are a common feature within Chinese phones, and we’re now beginning to see the deca-core Helio X25 and X27 in some Chinese phones. More often, though, the MediaTek processors inside Chinese phones are marketed as octa-core and 64-bit.Whereas many UK-sold octa-core flagships are sold with four cores tuned for performance and four for efficiency, here you’ll usually find all eight cores running at the same speed; increasingly UK flagships now run quad-core chips from the Qualcomm Snapdragon family.Two- or even 3GB of RAM is not uncommon, and 4GB is often available as a top-end option, and expect to find 32GB of storage, with microSD support (often only to 32- or 64GB, rather than 128GB). Also see: What’s the fastest smartphone 2017.Rather than NFC, phones with MediaTek processors often come with a feature called HotKnot. This works in a similar way, allowing you to do such things as share files and play multiplayer games with other HotKnot-capable phones. In the photography department a 13Mp Sony sensor with f/2.2 aperture is often found at the rear, while you’ll usually get a 5Mp selfie camera at the front. The camera functionality is very similar to that of any other Android phone, but you may find the Face Beauty mode whitens your skin tone – the painting of a face white is a cultural tradition. There will be a slider somewhere that lets you turn off this effect. Also see: Best sounding phone 2017.A full-HD screen is common, with Quad-HD much less so and HD screens still found in the cheapest models, and we’ve reviewed many a 5.5in-screen Chinese phablet. The screen is usually a good-quality IPS panel, and may often be marketed as having 2.5D Arc glass or 3D glass. This does not mean the screen is curved, but rather that the edges of the screen are slightly curved (like on the iPhone 7).Gorilla Glass is another common feature, which is fortunate because getting hold of a case for a Chinese phone is just as involved as buying the phone itself (we advise getting one at the time of purchase, although you often find one is supplied in the box).Customisable gestures are not built into Android, but they are very common in Chinese phones. This means you are likely to be able to double-tap to wake the screen, and by drawing a letter onscreen in standby mode you will be able to launch an app of your choice. Many Chinese phones will also allow you to use gestures to trigger the camera shutter. While we’re on the subject of software, be aware that some Chinese phones are sold rooted. For many people that’s a bonus – for example UMI’s Rootjoy app lets you easily install any OS you like – but it will put off some customers. We advise you to check whether wireless updates are available or if you will have to manually update the phone before you buy, if you think the latter may cause you grief. We’ve been reviewing Chinese phones supplied to us by Geekbuying, Coolicool and GearBest for a good couple of years now, but the honest truth is there are still many Chinese phones out there we have yet to review, and many, many Chinese phone manufacturers we’ve never even heard of.Over time we will build up our collection of Chinese phone reviews, and in the meantime we offer this chart not as a definitive guide to buying Chinese phones but as a guide to what you can expect for your money when you buy from China. The OnePlus 3T will be unfairly compared, for now at least, to the phone that came before it. So let’s ignore it. On its own, the OnePlus 3T is everything a modern smartphone should be; slim, fast, and responsive, with above average battery life and cameras that produce stunning images. And then there’s the price. OnePlus may not like being known for it, but £399 remains an absolutely amazing price point for the phone on offer. As long as you don’t want an iPhone, this Android handset stands side by side with the Samsung Galaxy S7 as the best example of a smartphone on the market today – once we’ve all got over that it came a little sooner than we had expected. We cannot recommend the Xiaomi Mi5s enough. This is the smartphone every 2016 flagship wanted to be, and it comes with a price tag half that of theirs. Fantastic build quality, fantastic performance, fantastic storage, battery and connectivity options – the Xiaomi Mi5s gets a big thumbs-up from us.The Mi Note 2 was wrongly overshadowed at its launch. This is a gorgeous big-screen Android phone with very decent performance, a great camera and plenty of storage. We’d like to see a Quad-HD screen on Xiaomi’s flagship phone, but this one should prove plenty sharp and clear. Google apps are not preinstalled, but there is a workaround if you are happy to do some tweaking. It might sound expensive, but the £799 Xiaomi Mi Mix actually offers very good value when you consider its meaty core hardware and generous 256GB of storage – it’s certainly less than you’d pay for an iPhone 7 Plus. This isn’t a phone you buy with budget in mind, however: the Mi Mix is the phone you buy when you want onlookers to say “Oh my gosh, what is that? It’s amazing – I want one of those!” The Mi Mix is a revolutionary phone that we hope is a sign of things to come, with that gorgeous bezel-less display, beautiful ceramic body, fantastic performance, long, long battery life and all the other fancy tech we can’t even pronounce, let alone understand. No matter – it works. Highly recommended.Running Flyme OS 5 out of the box, the well-built Meizu Pro 6 Plus is a fantastic Android phone with some seriously good performance, a vibrant and high-resolution screen and a decent camera. Unfortunately, though cheaper than UK flagships, at £399 (before import duty) it’s still too pricey to properly compete with the Galaxy S7 and OnePlus 3T. Neither are we in love with Flyme OS.Huawei’s Mate 9 is, in our opinion, the best in the Huawei line-up, boasting an impressively large battery alongside powerful internals, an improved dual-camera setup and a sleek, gorgeous design. The benchmark results were some of the best we’ve seen, bringing excellent value for money. EMUI 5 makes a huge difference to the overall experience too, and we can’t wait to see whether Huawei’s new technology will actually improve the performance of the smartphone over time. 7. I’d really like to give it negative stars, but I can’t.I switched over from AT T to try to save some money and this was the closest one to my house that had people that spoke Cantonese and Mandarin (for my mom). I’ve come in multiple times after switching phone plans to ask questions and pay for my phone bill and each experience has been awful. First off, whenever I came in it was always crowded, I don’t blame them. You’ll notice a sign in sheet where you can put your name and check in what type of assistance/service you’ll be needing. It sucks because I signed in and the workers don’t go by who’s next. It was insanely busy and people were cutting me in line when I knew I was next. Instead of the workers explaining to people that had just come in to sign in, they would quickly help them. Another time I signed in and it wasn’t as busy but all the workers were helping someone. They would be chitchatting about what they were doing after work and what they had planned for the weekend. I really don’t understand why they weren’t going to the checkin sheet to see who was next to help. Like I was being ignored while they all thought I wanted to stand there for no reason. Nobody came to ask if I had been helped or if I needed something. When I finally got someone to help me with my new phone, all she did was hand it to me. She didn’t ask if I needed help transferring items from the old to the new. Didn’t even say thank you when I was done. I will never come back to this location.

Why Do We Have Campaigns?

OnePlus founder Pete Lau has said his goal is to provide everyone with “access to the best and latest technology,” not just those that can afford high-end, expensive smartphones. OnePlus’ first smartphone, the One, makes good on that claim: it’s packed with high-end specs but costs less than half of competing high-end smartphones. It’s clear that OnePlus is leaning on BBK’s existing relationships with component manufacturers to source its high-end parts for the One. There’s no question how OnePlus is able to sell the phone for so little: Lau has said that OnePlus is selling the phone at cost, forgoing all profits on the hardware itself. This indicates that BBK or Oppo is subsidizing it out of the gate, but it’s not clear how long a business model like this will last.

Did you know Lenovo makes smartphones? It does, and plenty of them. Let’s take a look at the massive, range-topping Vibe Z2 Pro.

iOS 10

In the end, there can only be one “number-one,” but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider other options. Here are a few of the next-best smartphones, along with explanations for why they didn’t make the cut.Samsung Galaxy S5 – The Galaxy S5 is blisteringly fast, has an incredible display, and takes killer photos. In the end, though, its plastic build, TouchWiz UI, and niche health features make it a tough sell compared to the more premium iPhone 6. If I were handing out a second place ribbon, it would go to the Galaxy S5.Motorola Moto X (2014) – The Moto X is a solid phone, especially given its $400 off-contract price (compared to the $649 iPhone 6). However, it fails to deliver in one important area: mobile photography.HTC One (M8) – HTC’s One M8 is the only phone that could best the iPhone 6 in a fashion contest. Unfortunately, though, its combined performance and camera quality aren’t quite on par with its Apple-made competitor.Sony Xperia Z3 – The Xperia Z3 is a flagship smartphone that doesn’t need a case to survive a dip in the pool. Regardless of its affinity for water, though, its overall performance isn’t as smooth as the iPhone 6’s. What about the Z3’s 20.7-megapixel camera? It requires much more light than the 6 to make a good photo, and its software can be frustratingly inconsistent.OnePlus One – Out of all the iPhone 6’s competition, the $300 OnePlus One is the most phone for the money. But $300 can only go so far, and in terms of overall performance, the One can easily be described as a diluted version of Apple’s handset.Camera(s) – Smartphone photography is huge. Point-and-shoot camera sales have been declining for years, and selfies are at an all-time high – just think of how many different lens-equipped cases have been produced for the iPhone alone. No top-tier phone should have anything less than a 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP selfie cam.Battery life – Here’s the thing about battery life: There are many different methods of testing, and that makes it hard to translate claims like “10-hour video playback” and “11-hour Wi-Fi browsing” into real life. But, when it all boils down, any great phone should offer two full days of average use (email, YouTube, games, texts, and calls).Size – Phablets are still growing in popularity, but that doesn’t mean a 6-inch screen is the new golden standard. The top smartphone should have at least a 4.7-inch display to maximize mobile productivity. In the end, though, this is the one feature that ultimately depends upon user preference.Readability in sunlight – Phones travel outdoors more than any other mobile device. We use them to take photos of sunsets, post selfies in the rain, and find our way to the nearest Gigi’s Cupcakes. That said, top-notch smartphone displays should remain bright, vibrant and easily readable regardless of the lighting outside.Storage options – Smartphones wear multiple hats, and that makes internal storage a precious commodity. The best phone should have at least a 32GB capacity or MicroSD slot.Durability – Three out of four smartphone users end up buying a case for their device, but that doesn’t mean manufacturers are allowed to skimp on high-quality build materials. The “best overall” phone should have at least a Gorilla Glass 3 or sapphire display, and a metal chassis is preferable. In addition, the outer casing should hold up well against minor drops or a pocket full of keys, and it definitely shouldn’t bend (#bendgate).Speedy internals – Touchscreen interfacing tasks should rarely (if ever) cause jittering, standstills, or other funky behavior. Apps should launch as soon as you touch them, and hardware controls (volume rockers, physical, and capacitive buttons) shouldn’t ever lag, stick, or rattle.Call Quality – Cellular radio technology is rarely a problem in today’s smartphones, but sometimes earpiece and mic design can impede the quality of your call. No one wants to constantly adjust how a phone lays against their cheek to participate in a conversation.NFC – Mobile payment options like Apple Pay and Google Wallet make shopping incredibly easy — and arguably more secure. Any top phone from 2015 forward should be equipped with NFC, the technology that enables transactions on your phone.MicroSD slot – I’m sure there are a few technically good reasons for manufacturers to excludeMicroSD card slots, but I can’t think of any. Top phones should support external storage, period.

Honda then decided to add a plug-in hybrid version that was likely to sell in much greater numbers than either of the other versions, in order to give the Clarity a better chance of turning a profit. The problem is, when you design one car around three very different drivetrains, a lot of compromises have to be made. And the Clarity Electric’s rivals are much less compromised designs.Tesla has shown the world what can be done when a car is designed from the ground up around a battery-electric drivetrain. A vehicle designed from the start around electric motors and a big battery pack can have plenty of range, good handling, a roomy interior, and lots of cargo space. The Chevy Bolt doesn’t look like a Tesla, but like the Teslas, it was designed from the start as a battery-electric vehicle. It doesn’t have the range or speed of the big Teslas, but it has something else enabled by its battery-electric packaging: A surprisingly roomy interior enclosed in a small, nimble vehicle perfect for city driving. It’s no coincidence that the Teslas and the Bolt are the current gold standard of battery-electric vehicles. And it’s sad that Honda, which has spent years building up its green-car credibility, has settled for a compromised design with the Clarity Electric. Some folks say range doesn’t matter all that much, and the Clarity Electric will find buyers attracted to its size and Honda’s reputation for quality and durability. I’m skeptical: I think the plug-in hybrid version of the Clarity — or an Accord Hybrid — is likely to win over most of the green-minded Honda loyalists who might have taken a chance on a Clarity Electric with greater range.

The phone is powered by a mid-range Snapdragon 616 processor and 2GB of RAM. It’s far better than the Snapdragon 410 in the Moto G, but a step below the Snapdragon 617 you’ll find in the. Yet despite hardware that looks good on paper, I experienced some performance issues in testing. The phone received an AnTuTu score of 35,200. which is lower than the MediaTek-powered Blu Life One X (37,974). It barely edged ahead in PCMark’s Work Performance test, registering a score of 3,699 against the Life One X’s 3,599. Simply put, the Qualcomm chip should be performing better.I saw this average benchmark performance transfer over to general usage as well. The 5X started out snappy, but after installing a few apps like Slack, Spotify, and Twitter, things quickly grew a bit laggy. RAM management is potentially the culprit, as having a single app open, like the default messaging app, eats up 975MB of 2GB. Much of the resource consumption seems to come from background processes, so Huawei’s custom skin may be at fault as well (more on that in the next section). Battery life is solid. The phone lasted for 5 hours and 16 minutes while I streamed full-screen video over LTE at maximum brightness. That’s a lot better than the Life One X (4 hours and 4 minutes). The 13-megapixel rear-facing camera is surprisingly solid for the price. Pictures and video come out sharp in well-lit settings with color reproduction that looks generally true-to-life. Sometimes the auto-exposure struggles and either washes photos out or darkens them too much, but if this happens you can switch over to manual exposure. The 5-megapixel front-facing camera takes decent shots in terms of tone and clarity, and a Beauty Level slider lets you even out your skin tone.Software, Pricing, and ConclusionsThe 5X is running Android 5.0 Lollipop, but Huawei’s EMUI 3.1 software layer is designed to make it look more like iOS. There’s no app drawer, so all of your apps are arranged on the home screen, like iOS. And most of the stock apps, like the messaging and camera apps, look just like Apple’s. Unfortunately, both iOS and stock Android run a lot smoother than EMUI. As mentioned earlier, the UI layer is heavy with background processes, which slows your overall performance down. In addition, I encountered a number of bugs in testing, like apps that frequently force close for no reason at all. That’s not to say that there aren’t useful features. There are gesture controls, motion controls, floating docks, navigation bar changes, and a slew of other small customizations you can enable to improve your experience. In addition, there isn’t much bloat aside from some pre-installed apps like Facebook and Shazam. You’re left with 10.51GB of available storage, which is

Snapdragon 820 power and a 1080p display mean that the Mi5 isn’t troubled by intensive tasks such as 3D gaming. Everything runs with accomplished speed on Xiaomi’s phone, up there with the best of the Android flagships. The bright display also helps to bring games to life, making the phone a particularly agreeable platform for interactive entertainment. While the Mi5’s software is based on Android 6.0, it sits underneath one of the most drastic UI skins on the market. MIUI 7 takes a lot of visual cues from Apple’s iOS, including very similar “slide down” notifications and the removal of Android’s trademark app drawer. Icons are flat and colourful, and even the settings menu looks aesthetically similar. While the copycat act is rather shameless, MIUI does have plenty of tricks of its own – some of which are unique even in the Android sector. Randomised lock screen wallpapers pulled from an online catalogue of hundreds is just one of them, in-call recording is another. Xiaomi has worked hard to develop the OS as something unique, and regular OTA software updates are part of that process – it’s not uncommon to get a new one each week. This means that bugs – of which there are quite a few – get squashed quickly, but the downside is that other issues often appear unexpectedly. For example, after one OTA update the Mi5 wiped all Google account data from our review unit.Speaking of Google, because the Mi5 is intended for sale in China, it doesn’t come with Google apps by default. Instead, you’re expected to use Xiaomi’s own “Mi” account system – there’s even an app store that supplants Google Play. There’s a reason Xiaomi doesn’t want Google’s storefront on its phones – it sees cheap handsets like the Mi5 as a gateway to making money from users via paid-for wallpapers, themes and apps. Resellers will install Google apps to phones sold outside of China, but it’s still quite a shaky process; on our review unit, we had to source fresh installs due to error messages constantly popping up regarding permission errors. While Android 6.0 has enhanced app permissions control, for some reason there are niggles with how it works in MIUI. For example, when pairing an Android Wear smartwatch with the device, we were unable to use voice control to send SMS messages until we’d dug into the settings on the phone itself and enabled the right permission.Gallery: The Snapdragon 820 chipset is cutting edge and gaming performance reflects that. The fact that Xiaomi decided to use a 1080p display helps, too – with fewer pixels to render compared to quad-HD phones, games run smoothly. As long-time fans of the brand will tell you, such headaches are simply part and parcel of owning a Xiaomi phone – after all, it’s not intended to be used with Google apps in its present form – but if you’re looking for the kind of comfortable ride you get with Android handsets sold officially in the UK and Europe, you might get a rude awakening with the Mi5. On the bright side, Xiaomi has just released the “global” ROM for the phone that includes Google app support by default and features a wide range of languages. Installing this ROM on a Mi5 running the Chinese ROM (as our review unit is) requires a bootloader unlock request, and at the time of writing we’re still waiting for Xiaomi to approve ours. The long and short of it is that the phone now has a ROM which is designed for use outside of China if you wish to take advantage of it, which is definitely a positive thing.UPDATE: The day after this review was submitted Xiaomi approved our bootloader unlock request and we’ve since flashed the global ROM to the phone. It has Google Apps by default, removes Xiaomi’s Mi Store and (by and large) performs flawlessly, fixing the permission niggles and many other software oddities mentioned in the review. Resellers are already shipping the Mi5 with the global ROM, and should you choose to purchase one, it’s very likely that you’ll get it preinstalled. In terms of connectivity options, Xiaomi has relented in its dismissal of NFC and included it here, meaning that the Mi5 can be used to make contactless payments. In terms of network support, there are some serious caveats to consider for UK users. Because it’s designed to operate in China, the phone only supports certain 4G bands. If you’re with O2 – or a company that piggybacks on O2’s masts, like Giffgaff – then the best you’ll get is 3G, as the Mi5 does not support the 800MHz band that O2 uses. It should be stressed that this is a software and not a hardware issue – the phone is perfectly capable of supporting other 4G bands, and should Xiaomi decide to launch the phone in the west, there’s a good chance we could see a new ROM appear which solves this issue. While LG’s G5 has reintroduced the concept of swappable power cells via its unique modular design, the industry is still dominated by sealed units that don’t allow the end user to access the battery. That’s the case with the Mi5, which certainly couldn’t have been made so svelte and lightweight had it offered a removable back cover. The 3000mAh battery is – according to Xiaomi – the highest density power cell yet seen in a consumer device, and offers above-average stamina. A single charge was enough to get us well through an entire day, and some of the following 24 hours, too. Fast charging means that topping up the battery takes just over an hour, which is another bonus – but there’s no wireless charging, as seen on Samsung’s Galaxy S7. There’s no expandable memory either, so if you’re keen to get as much storage space as possible, you’ll want to invest in either the 64 or 128GB model. The Mi5’s Sony-made 16-megapixel sensor is fast to snap and performs well in brightly-lit conditions, but darkened environments see a bit of noise creeping in.For photography, the Mi5 packs Sony’s latest 16-megapixel IMX298 sensor. The phone also offers four-axis stabilisation (so shaking hands aren’t an issue during image and video capture), deep trench isolation to prevent colours bleeding, and phase-detect autofocus for quick focus and capture. The camera is indeed very swift to focus and grab an image, and generally the image quality is excellent – perhaps not quite as vibrant as photos taken on the market-leading Galaxy S7, but still acceptable. Low-light shooting is where the Mi5 struggles the most, with extended focus time and a lot of noise impacting certain shots. Video capture is less positive; 60fps HD recording isn’t supported, so you’ll have to make do with 30fps [Correction: Actually 1080p60 and 720p240 is supported]. Videos also appear to be a little fuzzy and ill-defined, and audio is scratchy. The camera is arguably the weakest part of the package, but even then, it’s still way above what other phones in this price range offer.Xiaomi Mi5: the Digital Foundry verdict

Honor’s first phone to launch in the U.S. is its only budget offering in the country to date. The Honor 5X packs a Snapdragon 616 processor and 2GB of RAM into a metal body, with a surprisingly good 1080p LCD display. There’s 16GB of storage built in, and the recent Android 6.0 Marshmallow (and EMUI 4.1) upgrade brings welcome performance improvements.

For nighttime viewing, Honor has added a second generation version of its eyecare mode. This strips out blue light, so you’re still able to catch some Zs after getting stuck down a late-night YouTube rabbit hole. You can schedule it, too, so you don’t have to remember to toggle it on and off every evening.

T-Mobile is now the least expensive major carrier, with a $40 for 500MB of data deal currently in play. Both Verizon and AT T offer $45 plans with less data. Sprint’s least expensive plan will run you $55, but that comes with a larger, 1GB data allotment.Bumping your data allotment up to at least 1GB per month gets incredibly expensive, at least on Verizon. Their customers pay $70 per month. Better deals are at T-Mobile ($50 for 1GB), Sprint ($55 for 1GB) and AT T ($65 for 2GB).If you’re willing to venture beyond the more familiar names, you can find an even better deal. Regional carrier MetroPCS has a 500MB smartphone plan for $40 and a 2.5GB plan for $50. Boost Mobile, meanwhile, offers a plan with 2.5GB of data that starts at $55 monthly and drops as low as $40 after making 18 on-time payments.Want even better deals? Zact Mobile offers highly customizable, inexpensive plans if you’re willing to give up unlimited calls and text. A plan with 500 minutes, 1000 texts and 1GB data costs about $35. A plan with 250 minutes, 400 texts and 200MB costs about $17 per month. And, you can go even lower. FreedomPop offers free cell phone service, though naturally, there are a few catches involved.Feature phones are quickly disappearing from the marketplace, with some carriers discontinuing them entirely. But if you have small kids, finding a clamshell phone is worth the effort. It could save you a bundle every month.Of the carriers we surveyed, MetroPCS has the absolute cheapest 4-line plan that includes feature phones. Just $70 buys you unlimited talk, text and 500MB of data per smartphone. Bump the data allotment up to 2.5GB per line and the cost rises to $90 per month. If you want a major carrier, AT T has a 4-line plan for $130 that offers a 2GB shared data pool for the smartphones. Verizon’s MORE Everything offers the same size plan, albeit at a cost of $190 per month.Of the major carriers, T-Mobile offers the most compelling deals for families: Four smartphones, each with 1GB of high-speed data, can be had for just $100 per month. Increase each phone’s high-speed data allotment to 3GB, and the price climbs to just $140. It’s the best family smartphone deal out there, and that’s before you consider the company’s offer to buy you out of your current contract. If you need to use your phone as a hotspot, AT T’s newest family deal offers a 10GB pool of data shared amongst 4 smartphones for $160 per month.

Android: Always make sure to check that the Android phone you’re buying has adopted and runs on the latest version of the Android OS. Conventional wisdom would have you avoid Android phones that are older than six months, but there isn’t much truth to these claims. Brad’s Deals tech editor Mike says that flagship Android phones that are older than 6 months are totally OK to get. “The hardware will still hold up and the difference in Android builds are never big enough to warrant buying a new phone over,” he said. “The must-have features are normally tied to the device hardware and not the OS. Its more of an ‘Apple vs Android’ talking point from the Apple side that doesn’t really have that much weight behind it.”
