Every night I put my galaxy S3 on silent. In the morning when I take it off silent all sounds are back to normal except my notification alert. I have to go into settings — my device — sounds — volume to turn my notifications back on again.

Just checked my S3 and Galaxy tab 7. I don’t know enough about the brickbug on the Galaxy Tab so I don’t really know. The best place to ask would be the XDA forums section for your device. I called Samsung yesterday, they were very helpful just said to send the phone back to them and they’d “fix” it, should take a week or so.

I thought, if Samsung are making it that easy then I should contact Telstra and see what they’re doing. The Live Chat Rep got in touch with Tech Support and the answer was take it back to the Telstra store Casuarina where I originally got it and they’d do a swap.

I wasn’t holding my breath as we all know that Telstra say one thing and do the opposite.. I got the know-it-all TechBar girl at the Telstra shop. She told me there wasn’t any issues with the S3 and it was against Telstra policy to replace faulty phones on the spot unless they were within the 30 day defect period.

When she finally took a breathe, I mentioned that their own support people had said to bring it back in and swap it over as it was a known issue; she gave me a funny look and re-iterated that it wasn’t Telstra policy to swap phones in store.

If I left it with them it’d take weeks. Samsung Sydney then forward your phone to an independent service center. Mine has been there for two weeks and still no word. Samsung have horrible customer support.

I had the sudden death happen to me in Nov Phone was fully charged at night but wouldn’t turn on in the morning. Phone was bought from Telechoice on a Virgin contract in the first week of Jun Took it in to Telechoice for repairs.

Got it back a few weeks later with the motherboard replaced. The new motherboard’s version is MP 1. Keeping fingers crossed that the new board isn’t from a faulty batch. Haven’t heard of ‘sudden death’ ones Couldn’t imagine an issue worse than your phone instantly and randomly dying on you.

This is a pretty big deal for Samsung. There have been a lot of issues with the S3 like this and the Exynos exploit where someone could access your phone and collect all your information, along with numerous software issues.

Best bet would be for Samsung to push the fix out asap and try to sweep this issue under the rug. I’ve never had a phone just die on me like that luckily I got rid of my S3 before it did, but I’d be furious if it did.

Check out the Apple threads with how many bad replacements people have received. The free replacements are given to people who pay for Apple Care. The carrier shops replace nothing.

So it’s time for Samsung to start looking deeper into their own code. The ironic thing is, the dev. Reports are suggesting that its the Flash memory chip that is failing here. It degrades over time, causing the device to slow down presumably writes fail and have to be repeated and then die.

Flash has a finite amount of write cycles before wearing out. There is usually a “wear levelling” algorithm done that spreads the writes out across the Flash to avoid wearing out any particular location prematurely.

SD cards and the like have it built in to their controllers. My guess is that Samsung has a bug in this wear levelling that is causing the flash to be worn out long before it really should be.

Once the flash is gone, it can only be fixed by board replacement or chip replacement but probably beyond most repair centers. The firmware fix is probably to fix the dud wear levelling.

It was probably one of the last to get the JB update, and was delayed by a “show stopper” bug that Samsung found early December Sudden Deaths were occuring prior to mid November.

Hopefully this was the bug that delayed the update. I don’t have much confidence that Telstra would get another release out anytime soon so really hoping it is fixed already. Working in TechBar i have found that the Jelly Bean has quite a few issues related to over heating, battery discharge, and screen flickers on edges, some updates also fail to properly reboot the system, and you end up with a brick.

As most S3s have not sufferred from sudden death the OTA process seems to work ok and the problem lies somewhere else but without facts its all something of a guess. Most people can’t even format their HDD an re-install Windows. They just buy a new PC. But the updates will get pushed to the carriers so they can do irrelevant testing for months.

It should avoid future wear but can’t fix the existing damage. Maybe the Telstra version does have the fix but yours was too far gone already. Mine is going strong and I got the phone the first day it was released in Australia.

This is looking to be a very big problem for Samsung. The internet is littered with similar stories of S3’s just dying for no reason. You know what isnt plastic junk — my old iphone 4 that I had to dig out of the draw and hadnt been used in 3 months.

Plugged it in and BAM — charging in under a minute and fully charged in an hour. Say what you will about apple believe me I have end of the day their shit just works!

Got a replacement phone and was told that mine should be back with them within business days. It won’t be any bigger issue than any other company has faced over the years, sure it’s bad publicity, but Apple suffered through the antenna gate and now is stronger than ever.

Well according to the test, i have the dodgy chip, so lets wait and see what happens, purchased in July. Well, according to the test my phone also has the volnurable chip. They’ve also compensated me with a one-month bill credit due to the delay in the repair. Not happy with the almost 3 weeks it took to repair, but happy with David at the Tech Bar in the Telstra Shop on Edward St in Brisbane as he genuinely did everything he could to assist me, even as the shop was undergoing a managerial change.

Hi just got told my phone in the Samsung tech centre for another week tech is waiting for a part to test it and i had to ring to find out, they couldnt ring, for gods sake go on the net and see that you have a HUGE problem, all up service is crap all round, for gods sake this is your frickin problem you stuffed up so replace my phone, as for the email i sent to Samsung no email back, if you read my earlier posts i got an email back but since then nothing, just watch, i will make their lives hell, we pay top dollar for the phone with no service.

Samsung is notorious for bad customer service. They’re happy to sell you the phone, but a total pain in the ass if you want support after the fact. I had a nightmare trying to get my Galaxy S fixed two years ago, doesn’t seem like much has changed.

Well my nightmare is just beginning but there’s will start very soon, im not going to let this go, every day on different forums around the world more and more phones are dieing so if they will not come out and say they have a problem maybe Apple need to know, ive had it with Samsung.

That’s the kernel I use. I didn’t even know it had the fix until I went back and read the changelogs. Supposedly the runtime fix is only set to run with a very specific date in the actual 0xf1 firmware revisions.

The fix was found in these previous kernels so far I dont know what Samsung was thinking putting death sticks in the note 2 aswell WTF but it seem the LTE verison of the note 2 is using the new emmc sticks and is unaffected.

You take it back they try to get out of paying for a replacement and you will either get a replacement or you won’t depending on what it is and who they deem is at fault. For example a power supplys fails its a warranty, so you take it back wait two weeks get a new one but lose money because it cost you in time and money.

How many got a free replacement phone when clearly there was a problem with the iphone 4 Antennagate? It amazes me how good their hardware is, and some of the worst coding disasters to go right along with it.

I think this might be the tipping point with the dev. As if Samsung holding back the Exynos sources wasn’t bad enough I might have to give a long hard evaluation for my next Android device.

But who am I kidding? They’ll find a way to wine and dine me with new hardware and features. I’m sure it’ll make a great paper weight! Thats exactly what i have been saying you pay top dollar you want top service, if Samsung continue with this bad service and denial of this problem they will die a slow death.

Lets be fair, sending your phone away and taking up to a couple of weeks has always been that way with every phone, manufacturer and carrier, so Samsung’s service method is no different to how it’s always been.

So really, as much as I can fully understand your frustration of being without a phone for a few weeks, this is how phone repairs has always been. I’ve had all sorts of tech die on me, including iPhones and Sony mobiles, you should understand this is how service repairs are done, we’ve all been through this with different tech.

Don’t tell me that’s not iPhone premium territory. I woke up yesterday morning to discover that my SGS3 had ceased to function got it on June 1st. Seemingly the same as everyone else in this thread — wouldn’t turn on no matter what I did.

I bought a new battery before work as I thought this might be the issue, though that didn’t change things. Standard procedure — I left it on charge over night, woke up about 4am and unplugged it. Two hours later woke again and it was dead.

Took it into Vodafone, they replaced it on the spot with a refurbished model — which was in better condition looks brand new than mine which had some scratches and dents on the plastic from wear and tear.

Fortunately had everything backed up in the cloud including photos, music, SMS so it only ended up costing me about 3 hours of my life to mess around with it until it was configured the way I like it.

Good result in the end — and very happy with Vodafone. Interestingly, Vodafone didn’t do any checks on it. They trusted me completely when I went in there and described what had happened.

They swapped it instantly. I could’ve dropped that thing in the pool for all they knew. I had loaded a modified OS and rooted it too — though I guess if they couldn’t turn it they wouldn’t know that.

This problem might not be affecting you, but it is affecting heaps of people worlwide, and is Samsungs problem. No Samsung has not officially acknowledged it on any of their official pages so the joe blow know what is happening, can you show me an official Samsung page with this problem and how they have fixed it, because i went to the Official Samsung Australia page and there is nothing there, if there is its well hidden.

My S3 died a week before xmas. I woke up and the charge light was still on, I thought it was strange as it should of finished charging. I unplugged it and no sign of life. Anyway, I sent it back to the guys in Granville and they had it fixed in a few days.

I would of received it just before xmas but Australia post lost my parcel for 2 weeks. It’s all working now, I changed to the UK rom and running 4. All in all, I’m happy with the warranty service, it was just aus post that caused my delay.

Have rooted my phone and after 4. So I used triangle away and unrooted my S3 to official just in case it died on me, for warranty. Used the eMMc Check and have the sudden death affected chip Type: System Recovery 3e It has no advanced setting!!

I would then do a full wipe from within recovery Backup First, in the hopes that if your eMMC is on the fritz, the patch MAY help get things back to normal.

K updates OTA, or via Kies. Seeing as your phone is already bricked, just take it into the store you bought it from, tell them the story and get it fixed.

If they disagree, just demand that the phone died on you and it’s their responsibility to fix it. It does sound like a bit of work, but a worthy project in my opinion. Got mine back from the Telstra store today, took it on New Years Eve.

Regardless of your screen getting fixed by a third party, don’t bring it up. So my S3 bit the dust today at the day mark. Sent a text on it then came back a few minutes later to see if I had a reply and it was sitting at the splash screen.

Couldn’t power it off so had to pop the battery out. Turning it back on would only bring up the same “Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I” splash screen and it would boot no further.

Tried the three finger salute but couldn’t even get it into recovery mode. Called up Samsung who gave me the address of the service centre in Granville and took it there this afternoon.

Lady at the service counter told me it would be at least three to four days to repair as they were having delays with parts. Interestingly the guy who was served ahead of me was also dropping off an SGS3.

Like some others I did get some warning signs of the impending doom. I first noticed it on New Years day when I started getting serious lag issues that were not resolved even with several power cycles.

Eventually after about half a day normality returned but it was enough to get me searching the net where I discovered this ‘Sudden Death’ issue. All I can say is that if your handset starts inexplicably lagging it’s probably time to start doing daily backups as it may not be long for this world.

So taking into account it would not of been picked up untill the 2nd due to New years day being a public holiday, it took 8 days. Can I ask, but when you guys talk about OTA, does that mean doing it via 3g, or over home wireless as well?

Having it fail totally is probably a good thing; if the fix comes through then my understanding is that it will stop new errors from being created — existing bad blocks aren’t repairable. Over the air is receiving the update either by 3G or wireless.

The update gets sent over the network to the phone. I’ve clarified my poorly worded reponse on Crowd Support now. I’m guessing that the current Telstra 4. Maybe some chance the fix was merged over but only Samsung would know.

So, seeing the importance of this new patch to rollout as soon as possible, what is the thinking behind the rollout? Would Samsung rollout to the countries with the most sales first to limit damage?

And if so, I would assume Australia would be lower down the list. Also the patch I assume would have to cover 4. Australia has only received 4. Being a novice in this field, would the patch be a generic patch for both 4.

I’m still on hols and do haven’t applied the update that came thru around xmas time. So what chance would I have of getting the fix if I reflashed, say, with a UK 4. Knowing the speed of getting updates through Telstra, there will be a huge pile of dead S3’s out there, and mine will probably be on it..

I’m no expert just been reading XDA a lot. As far as I know it makes no difference if you upgrade to JB or not. Bug seems to be present in any versions created prior to late December Only thing we can do is nag Telstra and hope or load a non-Telstra version and probably void warranty.

I had my S3 on charger all night — was working fine since 4. No lags or problems. Picked it up, and saw it was still charging — thought it was weird as it should have finished charging. My phone started rebooting itself then hours later wouldn’t go past the SII logo.

I’m with Virgin but I called Samsung first. They got me to try to get it to go to recovery over the phone and it wouldn’t so told me to take it to a fonebiz repair centre to be fixed. Luckily there was one close by.

The guy there didn’t ask any questions and just said yeah we have had about 10 of these this week and there is a delay of about a week and a half as they have so many to do.

The good news is that they didn’t squabble about fixing it for a second! No questions asked if you are worried He said it was mostly the models from July to September with the issue plus some of the new red ones.

Glad I didn’t go to Virgin first and have their level of delay on top Hopefully you can get your phone fixed without too much drama and it doesn’t take too long!

Gotta admit that it makes you reevaluate the iPhone when you can make an appointment at the Apple store and get your handset swapped out right away with a new one in no time at all and restore from backup instantly.

Yeah, I don’t have a backup as the Kies software is a pile of crap — takes forever to do a backup and becomes unresponsive. But not a big deal. So used to it. I could never go iphone, I would put up with a boat load of shit to not have an iphone.

I switched to MyPhoneExplorer — works a treat. I’ve yet to take my phone to the dealer but I have tried everything. It is effectively a dud. Never been wet, minor drops and never anything loaded than Play Store software.

It happened without warning. The phone was taken from my pocket and it was stuck on the Galaxy boot screen. Now it won’t even get that far. I just installed the emmc-check app ran it and got NO.

My wife was on the phone to someone on Friday morning, hung up, put it on the desk and next time she looked over it was at the boot logo. Took it back to Dick Smith where we bought it outright on 1st June this year and they said it would be a 3 week!!!

Hopefully it just gets fixed and comes back with the new revision mainboard and we never have to worry about it again. It’s been around days of ownership so it falls right in the perfect time zone.

I’m a little worried about a tiny crack in the bottom left of the screen which resulted from the phone being dropped on a tiled floor back in early December. I actually ordered a new screen a few weeks back but it was delayed in shipping and only turned up Friday afternoon after dropping the phone off Friday morning — dammit!

It might be like a batch of computers where “a lot” have bad powers supplies, or monitors. All you can do is replace the ones that fail. And if this is the case, then they donknow how many will fail.

There may be hundreds more, it may start to ease off? I juswish they could say. Have also seen batch that “all” ofa particular hdd was failing, and in that case they ended up replacing all of them, broken or not Its easy to see why they don’t tells us what’s happening, I doubt may other companies would either unless they had to, but it would be nice to know more.

You only hear the bad news, and the good news is, there are still plenty with that chip and firmware still going strong since launch. The fixes are being rolled out in the U.

K, and hopefully make their way down here soon. You can always take matters into your own hands and flash the U. K firmware yourself if you really wanted.

If there were a real lot of them, Samsung would judge that the impact on its brand of doing nothing might be significant, and issue a recall. The fact that they haven’t suggests there are not that many failing as a percentage of the total phones out there.

Sidenote, CustomROMs must surely be better The 3G version or 4G as well? The 16GB model or 32GB as well? My wife has a 4G 16GB model and a software update happened on the weekend.

Samsung sent me an email requesting my phone info and they would assign a case manager. I sent them all the info and that my phone was off to the tech centre as i needed it back quickly.

Got a call back today from Samsung and the girl says we can send a courier out there today to pick up your phone this is 10 days later after i sent the email and take it to Sydney for repairs, i said when i sent you the email i stated that that i had sent it for repairs and the tech centre has fixed it and they will be sending it back tomorrow WTF is wrong with this company, i told them i want to talk to someone high up, im appalled with their lack of customer service and support, she said give me your mobile number and i will get someone to ring you up Round 3 coming, this company is so incompetent, i have never come across such bad customer service.

Considered flashing to UK but have decided against it. I have the bad chip and my phone is quite laggy. Decided not to risk warranty and thought if this is the beginnings of Sudden death it might be to late for the UK firmware to fix my phone.

Damage might already have been done. Notice my phone from time to time has been getting very hot!! So, at this point in time if it dies hopefully they will fix it and if an official Aussie fix arrives soon hopefully that will fix it.

As it was dead when you sent it I presume your phone was all stock? Hi Aalex i sent a copy of the receipt to the repair centre with the phone, yes it was stock and 6 months old and the only way a Samsung phone gets replaced with a new one is when it is one month old or less.

My already low estimation of Samsungs software prowess has gotten even lower now. I’m just glad at least Sony are moving back to microSD so I will have more options next time.

Hopefully other manufacturers follow suit now too. It wasn’t until i pulled the battery and it still wouldn’t start that i realised it was really really dead this time. So if they replace the motherboard to fix sudden death, how would they know what ROM was on the original one?

Seems to me, the bigger the company in any industry, the more protracted the customer service is, welcome to the real world, wait till you deal with insurance companies, network carriers, or any company that’s national or multi-national, you just know after a while, and expect this is how things work.

If this issue is as big as it seems, then Samsung should put out a recall. Perhaps it isn’t that big, in terms of devices failing as a faction of total sold? No it seems not, as it’s not getting much media attention, if it was happening to a decent percentage of phones it would be main stream news.

I don’t think any company will do a product recall unless the product jeopardises safety. How big is the problem — only Samsung knows and I guess the stats won’t be released to general public.

That really makes me feel uncertain carrying the phone in my pocket — bad for Samsung reputation. Hopefully Samsung one day will make a statement on the issue. I have sold through my outlets hundreds and hundreds of GS3’s over the last 6 months probably over a thousand actually and only TWO have come back with this problem.

It all depends whether it partially dead, or completely dead Custom binary phones are still getting fixed though. Well that would be one positive. As mentioned before have held off with customROMs but had to root yesterday to utilise TitaniumBackup.

If they are fixing customROM phones then they would hopefully most likely not bork at just a rooted phone running stock ROM Read some guides about unrooting the phone but they all seem to suggest loading a stock ROM from scratch.

Samsung say it’s a small issue, but I’m not so sure. Any 16gb model with the faulty firmware is essentially a ticking time bomb till its demise. Luckily we are the ones who know about it and can flash the appropriate software, but what about Joe public who doesn’t read up on tech news?

Not very nice for their phone to just die on them. I know I’d be extremely pissed if my phone just died on me one day. Hear what you are saying and would also suggest that the silent majority don’t understand the technical side of the phones let alone the specific issue which seems to eMMC related.

In some ways it is handy not to know about the bug, ignorance is bliss in this case because Especially since some of us purchased these phones with specific use cases in mind and are now questioning whether the device is fit for purpose.

I noticed throughout the day it was a bit glitchy listening to music poweramp installed on the phone memory, music on the micro SD. Received a message while driving last night and checked it when I got home.

Unfortunately, this problem seems widespread and there’s nothing you could have done to avoid it aside from voiding your warranty and flashing a rom to it. Supposedly there’s a fix being pushed out, but sad to hear your phone died before it was available.

I won’t pay a cent when I know screen cracks clearly weren’t the problem. There are phones that have never ran any custom software, that are showing a custom binary when they die out Samsung knows this, and are replacing pretty much everything that comes into the service centres..

It just suddenly rebooted itself during charging and just wouldn’t go past the splash screen. Not sure if this was caused by the eMMC bug, but it looks like it was.

Phones dying and showing custom ROM count on its own? How is a consumer supposed to defend themselves if the phone altered the binary count itself? Are all 3rd party phone repairers taking in phones, regardless of binary counter?

This is the first case I have ever seen of it When the chip dies, the product name that displays GT-I remains blank, and the binary custom. I think Samsung have fixed the issue though, as occasionally my phone would say “modified” in the system status.

A reboot would bring everything back to normal. This is on a completely stock firmware. My phone has an uptime of hours, and everything is normal. That’s one reason, yes.

Another is when they judge that the harm to their brand reputation is worse if they do nothing. If a lot of phones die and the talk spreads as it will on social media this could well happen.

Sounds promising, I guess. To give some balance to the people trying to portray this as a worldwide catastrophe and that everyone has a phone that has brocken down, I pulled stats from my system to get more accurate figures than what I thought.

I can keep people updated if they want. All have been back within 8 days of being sent to Service, thats from drop off to back into store. Makes me relieved, as i recently went back to my iPhone 4s.

Owned s3 for 7 months and sold it since. Hopefully this issue is a low occurrence, but still shows the quality control is not of the highest standard for some batches. From your tiny sample size with unverified data, that’s hardly anything conclusive.

Surely not going to take your word for it. For Samsung to recognise it as an issue implies that the issue is prevalent and they certainly wouldn’t want word to get around just how many of these things are dying.

I’m sure they would have wanted to keep this hush hush, however the number of dead SGS3’s continued to rise and word got around which forced them to make a statement to downplay the occurrence.

I’m wondering how well Samsung test their devices. Not long ago there were security exploits found in the Exynos SoC and now this sudden death issue that’s plaguing quite a few customers.

My sample size is better than a few people saying they have the problem, like in this thread. Or you’re sample size of NOTHING, as you sold your phone, and have posted plenty times about how this is a big thing, without a shred of data to back it up other than some people posting and blogging about it on the interwebs.

All these people rampaging about wanting new phones and that Samsung should recall all GS3’s thats 40 million mind you are just ignorant IMO. Most phones have gliches but the Galaxy Sudden Death fault is a biggie considering you lose the use of the phone for a week.

I’m glad Samsung are addressing the issue, but feel sorry for people who suffer sudden death but are refused warranty because of some unrelated issue or damage. I feel sympathetic to them also, but all of the brands will deny warranty on any fault even Apple if there is any physical damage, even if the physical damage has nothing to do with the fault.

Anything from Samsung, ranging from a simple acknowledgement, to a SW fix, right up to a full recall, is just a commercial decision based on perceived threat to reputation vs.

I have an 18 month old galaxy S3 and all of a sudden its started dying! If you dropped your phone and there is something not working with your screen or any sensor, it is very possible that this component lost contact with the motherboard.

Check the youtube videos how to open your phone. Remove the cover and make sure all the plugs are connected by pressing them towards the motherboard. Then suddenly the screen went black.

I believe that the more you take good care of your phone and the battery, you are prolonging the life of your battery. And now, my habits are changed indeed. I will take good care for my phone now.

Every night I put my galaxy S3 on silent. In the morning when I take it off silent all sounds are back to normal except my notification alert. I have to go into settings — my device — sounds — volume to turn my notifications back on again.

I do live in a rural setting, but I get 4g. My samsung s3 mini 5 days ago started to fall off, and several times in a circle until it does not work and when it turns on the battery is completely depleted… that happen whenever I connect to the internet.

When the Internet is not on phone works perfectly … What should I do? To not have 3g or 4g showing on my phone. Plus can not send or recieve mms messages. There are ways to unlock the phone but most of them are paid.

Also try going into settings-mobile data make sure its on. All other font sizes email etc not affected. I have an s3 which is approximately 14months old and has resentley developed a problem. It’d be nice to be able to get back some of my photos from the S3. If its really unrecoverable then its not too bad I suppose, I won’t need to change my passwords that were saved on the S3: But in the future, I would highly recommend you use the Dropbox or even Google Plus instant upload feature to keep all your photos backed up.

Mine was really, really laggy for about a month before it finally croaked. The day before it died I was about to hurl it because I was trying to dial and it was completely locked up.

Anyone that has experience with Android, knows that running a patch update Which is what OTA does can have less than desirable effects Third party apps installed, battery saving apps, multiple launchers etc.

All of these can make things really messy when it comes to updating the system files. I have a backup routine in place Things go on smoothly. Nobody forces anyone to download every free app and launcher from the Play Store.

Install a load of crap on Windows and do an in place upgrade Let me know how that works for you. To answer your question truthfully Bought my wife the G3 in September through Virgin. Few weeks in she started having bluetooth problems not connecting to her Captiva.

Took it back to Virgin who told her it was because she had the phone in her handbag and to take it out and leave it in the centre console. This did sweet bugger all of course but we played along.

Next came the constant call dropouts which they blamed on the different case she had soft rubber. Told her to take the case off and see how she went. By the time it bricked in early November the guys at Virgin told us that they only had to replace it within 4 weeks.

When we pointed out that if they hadn’t fobbed us off in the first place we wouldn’t be in this situation they told us that they are a franchise, that the information on the ACCC website wasn’t worth squat and they would only send the phone off to be repaired.

Now I read that they are replacing the PCB with the same so I guess we’ll go through the whole circus in another couple of months. Mine did it after the months.

New pcb and it’s been fine. I am also running jb with no issues. Hopefully there will be more quality control being that there is an actual human to identify any weak points in the motherboard solder points etc..

Got to say, as sad as this issue is, I’ve had four iPhones and had to replace three, the forth I just lived with a faulty home button, so yet to have a problem free iPhone, yet never had an issue with a Samsung phone yet, so luck of the draw.

Put it into my pocket after locking it, pulled it out 3 minutes later and stuck on the Splash Screen. Took it to my provider Optus and am waiting to hear back but they have said it should be fixed by the end of this week.

My S3 was activated around the end of June, it stopped working this morning. It’s been another 3 month’s since the pcb was replaced and it’s fine. I have had my S3 for 6mths. Left my S3 on charge overnight and it was dead this morning.

Got it overseas from a Samsung showroom about 6 months ago. Doesn’t turn on at all. Mine did this on a flight to HK, but it wasn’t terribly bad, the USB power charger wouldn’t charge, and the lock screen became unresponsive, draining the battery to zip.

Did a “hard” reset by leaving the battery out, booting from USB cable, then pulling the cable and plugging the battery back in once the lock screen was unlocked. But, I really don’t think this is the same issue as everyone else is getting, it sounds more The only major change is, i did put omega 7.

Android has its own restrictions. If this turns out to be the tip of the iceberg, then they samsung may have some problems with their reputation. Not a good look for your flagship device!

Mine died on Friday; took it to Telstra today There was another guy in the store with with the same problem while I was there! They gave me a loaner to use while waiting for repairs, which is something I think my partners S3 from Virgin mobile is having this problem, did the update about 5 days ago, its as laggy as can be, it was bought on a plan about Aug this year.

Try a factory reset first after doing a full backup. Android can be a bit clunky after a major in place software upgrade. Mine died on Christmas Day. Was working at the start of dinner, not at the end, plenty of battery.

Bought it through mobicity in May, so need to go through their warranty as it is international stock, but no scratches or such, so should be no problem. Got a response today from Australian Warranty Services mobicity’s partner, saying I have to send it to their repair centre, which opens on January 7th after being closed for Christmas.

Hoping things won’t take long due to it being a common problem. Anyway, has anyone ever done warranty claims through them? How long did it take you? Do you know if they allow me to pay a fee difference to upgrade the phone?

Hoping they would allow this. Convenient for an interstate nye holiday. I’m with Vodafone, haven’t made it home yet, my screen has been super cracked for ages, if they try and refuse replacement when it’s a common hardware issue I’ll go ape.

I’ve never had any problems with it compared to the undamaged screen on the atrix i had. I’m bookmarking all pages i find discussing this and telling them straight up replace it it’s samsungs prob not theirs.

I tried to charge the phone but it kept switching on and doing this fun power cycle thing where the charge AC mind you wasnt strong enough to keep the phone on, and on and on. So I pulled the battery out, gave it two minutes, plugged it all back in and No switching back on, no charge.

How am I going to wipe these off my phone before trying to get the phone fixed on warranty? I don’t even know where my receipt is. If you bought it by credit card, your credit card statement should be able to act as proof of purchase.

Go straight to Samsung. Dick Smith will refer you to them unless the phone is a few days to a week old where by Dick Smith may help. Mine died in November last year, I bought it in May, I brought the phone directly to the Samsung repair centre and got the main board replaced after a three week wait.

I have one small crack in my S3 screen also and one of the Optus repairers said that could of caused the issue. I explained and showed the countless number of threads being posted and they said it would be raised to their head manager for a final decision.

Go direct to Samsung rather than through optus. Screw them, they shouldn’t be allowed to blame known common hardware failures on things like cracked screens or custom roms. You may need to take it to a Samsung repairer depending on how long you have owned it.

Samsung says they want to bring an update as soon as possible. This way is no longer possible. It seems like 4. Now there’s an OTA update for 4. K, which updates the firmware and baseband to LLA.

Lol, I dont think so, while I may be paranoid reading up on installing Pdroid privacy on my current phone, I have a Galaxy S running CM 10 with no dramas. Needed a new battery at the beginning of the year and is still going strong my 1 yr old’s testing of build quality included.

It is probably more of an issue if you install samsung firmware updates like the bad kernel emmc issue on GNote1 and the Exynos 4 issues allowing access to all physical memory.

A rogue app of falsely programmed kernel can easily fry your Motherboards, which is probably what is happening here. I’ve spoken to Samsung and they have advised me to get the phone returned from Optus and then get it sent to them for repairs.

They should still be covered by the statutory warranty as most people would reasonably believe a mobile phone should work properly for more than two years. Have a look at this very useful publication: People need to stop focusing on the manufacturer’s warranty as they are almost meaningless in Australia.

The statutory warranty is much more extensive than most manufacturer’s warranty. Given Samsung has offered to repair it under warranty, it is not worth arguing with the Optus store.

However I would report the store to consumer affairs office in your State or Territory as the Optus Store has most likely broken the law based on the information you have provided.

If the Optus store didn’t provide a detailed technical report showing that the failure was caused by the damage that occurred at the time the screen was cracked, then they have no basis to deny the warranty repair.

I suppose most makers has a way of knowing if the screen has been replaced by 3rd party thus voiding warranty? In fact Samsung discovered the problem and is working on the firmware update to be released soon the sooner the better.

The Optus store, Highpoint in Melbourne, had no issues regarding the cracked screen when they sent it in. It’s their repair centre which is refusing my warranty claim. When I send the phone onto Samsung I will be sure to include a few prints regarding the issue, including their own ‘official’ statement on the issue.

If Samsung in the end come back and squabble the same I will take it into my own hands to repair the phone. This is definitely the case. The ACCC won a case in the court over this.

Yes, even a shop assistant. Clearly if the screen is physically damaged, then the screen isn’t going to be covered by the warranty. They told me if they take it for service I would be without a phone for 2 to 3 weeks.

If I had an Apple iphone they would have replaced it no questions I have been a big fan of Samsungs but now i will be without a phone for 3 weeks and now I have to pay postage from my own pocket to send the phone for repairs plus return postage for them to send it back, that’s crap service, Apple treat there customers better.

Hey guys, first time poster, long time reader.. This is Vodafones crap service. Optus didn’t charge me a cent to have it sent off to their repair centre, or back and they provided me with a S3 loan phone.

For the amount you pay for a fruit phone they better have a great service. Which I think is tiny bit high. But if that price includes good service then it’s not bad in a way. And I’m not expecting the service to be as great as Apple’s.

Some people who bought an iPhone 5 had hassles too and they paid top dollar for it. Some even has got their phones replaced more than twice and still had problems.

Thanks JustCuising that’s what i did im sending it to the Vermont Centre i sent it Express Post today as if i waited for a courier it might take 2 to 3 days for the courier to get here so i paid for postage to get it there quickly, and the Vodafone shop i went to didn’t have any phones to lend so im without a phone and the person at the Vermont Centre said that Samsung does not compensate them for postage that’s why i had to put a return bag in, what crap service is that from this huge company Samsung.

Samsung realise they have a problem and will try to fix with a software update I would recommend people to call Samsung support and let them tell you what to do, I am guessing one will have to pay for shipping if one decided to by pass support and go directly to the repair center.

One thing to keep in mind support and repair center systems dont link, if for some reasons you need to contact support after you have sent your phone in for repair they will not be able to help you much, they have no records of the repair request.

I’ve dropped mine a few times, some pretty hard you can see the dents in screen surround. It was in a case, but bad luck the way it fell on corner where case flips open. Also had Nokia forget which model but it fell off my car seat one day and the screen was trashed!!!

Must have fell “just so” It was fixed and dropped heaps after that nature owork I was doing and didn’t want a case and never a problem since Got it replaced with same model when I lost it Dropped that one a few times too, once down a full flight to of cement steps.

Plenty of people here have had no issue with the Samsung service, with phones being fixed and replacement phones being given for time out There was nothing hard about it really.

I suppose you could even say it is testament to the phone, that the stores have not needed to carry a large spare parts stock for replacements. Mine being Telstra, I went on the local Telstra dealer.

Ok so what will they do? Hope they dont expect the user the pay for it out of their own packet. This is a Samsung problem and this has been noted in quite a few tech sites eg CNET, BGR, Endgadet etc etc and is a Samsung fault, but I dont think it affects all S3’s and secondly I dont think that it can be fixed through a firmware update, I would say its more a circuit problem or something like that.

The Canadian Bell models of the IM were suffering a pretty similar fate Only much worse it seemed. There were no hardware revisions, and the code was eventually patched to stop the problem.

I called Samsung yesterday, they were very helpful just said to send the phone back to them and they’d “fix” it, should take a week or so. I thought, if Samsung are making it that easy then I should contact Telstra and see what they’re doing.

The Live Chat Rep got in touch with Tech Support and the answer was take it back to the Telstra store Casuarina where I originally got it and they’d do a swap. I wasn’t holding my breath as we all know that Telstra say one thing and do the opposite..

I got the know-it-all TechBar girl at the Telstra shop. She told me there wasn’t any issues with the S3 and it was against Telstra policy to replace faulty phones on the spot unless they were within the 30 day defect period.

When she finally took a breathe, I mentioned that their own support people had said to bring it back in and swap it over as it was a known issue; she gave me a funny look and re-iterated that it wasn’t Telstra policy to swap phones in store.

If I left it with them it’d take weeks. Samsung Sydney then forward your phone to an independent service center. Mine has been there for two weeks and still no word. Samsung have horrible customer support.

Brought mine voda Southland but sent it to Samsung Vermont myself, if i let voda take it then it would be taken to Sydney so that is more time wasted i also sent an email to Samsung complaining about their crap service and also added links from all the pages online about the Sudden Death problem and bingo i got an email back wanting to know all about my phone Was this problem only with a certain batch of Galaxy S3’s or throughout the lot, definatel not going to give Samsung a good name thats for sure.

I had the sudden death happen to me in Nov Phone was fully charged at night but wouldn’t turn on in the morning. Phone was bought from Telechoice on a Virgin contract in the first week of Jun Took it in to Telechoice for repairs.

Got it back a few weeks later with the motherboard replaced. The new motherboard’s version is MP 1. Keeping fingers crossed that the new board isn’t from a faulty batch. Haven’t heard of ‘sudden death’ ones Couldn’t imagine an issue worse than your phone instantly and randomly dying on you.

Hell I’d put up with scuffs, and Apple Maps even though it now has the better Google Maps experience than even android does if that meant my phone wouldn’t just spontaneously die on me, especially when I really needed it.

This is a pretty big deal for Samsung. There have been a lot of issues with the S3 like this and the Exynos exploit where someone could access your phone and collect all your information, along with numerous software issues.

Best bet would be for Samsung to push the fix out asap and try to sweep this issue under the rug. I’ve never had a phone just die on me like that luckily I got rid of my S3 before it did, but I’d be furious if it did.

I had 4 before going to Android. That 3rd one just turned off while actually using it Dead as a door nail. It’s replacement was handed own when I switched. Two others people I work with had screens just fail.

Turned out a replacement fixed the issue, so no data loss etc, but truth is, no device is without its bad batch or something else like new firmware updates to fix some manufacturing issues He he he he.

Check out the Apple threads with how many bad replacements people have received. The free replacements are given to people who pay for Apple Care. The carrier shops replace nothing.

Sorry my phone is 6 months old and i had to pay to send it to the tech centre and plus supply a return bag as they told me at the Samsung service centre at Vermont Victoria, Samsung doesn’t compensate them for postage, yes great warranty from Samsung, this is going to bite them big time,.

There’s a bunch of speculation the fix is in the new bootloader, but I can’t really see how. I can see it being in the actual kernel above everything else. No, it still has the kernel vulnerability.

Every Samsung device that has the Exynos chip is affected It did have the brick bug, which was also a major coding disaster in certain kernels, that when factory reset, would completely die.

So it’s time for Samsung to start looking deeper into their own code. The ironic thing is, the dev. Reports are suggesting that its the Flash memory chip that is failing here.

It degrades over time, causing the device to slow down presumably writes fail and have to be repeated and then die. Flash has a finite amount of write cycles before wearing out. There is usually a “wear levelling” algorithm done that spreads the writes out across the Flash to avoid wearing out any particular location prematurely.

SD cards and the like have it built in to their controllers. My guess is that Samsung has a bug in this wear levelling that is causing the flash to be worn out long before it really should be. Once the flash is gone, it can only be fixed by board replacement or chip replacement but probably beyond most repair centers.

The firmware fix is probably to fix the dud wear levelling. It was probably one of the last to get the JB update, and was delayed by a “show stopper” bug that Samsung found early December Sudden Deaths were occuring prior to mid November.

Hopefully this was the bug that delayed the update. I don’t have much confidence that Telstra would get another release out anytime soon so really hoping it is fixed already.

If you would of gone back to the store you purchased the phone from, they would of sent it into service for you, with no charge for delivery. Because it would take longer, why could they not send it to the Melbourne tech centre here which is closer, why do they have to send it to Sydney.

I rang the tech centre in Melbourne and they said it would take 2 to 3 days when the person at Vodafone said it would take 2 to 3 weeks, thats why i sent it myself, in other words i gave myself great customer service not crap customer service.

Working in TechBar i have found that the Jelly Bean has quite a few issues related to over heating, battery discharge, and screen flickers on edges, some updates also fail to properly reboot the system, and you end up with a brick.

Understood — if your going to OTA, then at least ensure your info is backed up to your google or kies account, or a full back up has been stored in the desktop kies at some point in time.

Most people can’t even format their HDD an re-install Windows. They just buy a new PC. But the updates will get pushed to the carriers so they can do irrelevant testing for months.

I got the update a week or so before the sudden death So I guess not. I’m guessing that if the Flash is already on its last legs, applying the fix probably isn’t going to help it anyway. It should avoid future wear but can’t fix the existing damage.

Maybe the Telstra version does have the fix but yours was too far gone already. Mine is going strong and I got the phone the first day it was released in Australia. Touch wood It’s just a software issue that has been patched.

Yes happened to me too — only 3 months old and died — wouldnt charge or wake up. Then after 24 hours it magically started charging Its obviously something to do with the usb or board as it wont appear on the PC when hooked up either.

This is looking to be a very big problem for Samsung. The internet is littered with similar stories of S3’s just dying for no reason. You know what isnt plastic junk — my old iphone 4 that I had to dig out of the draw and hadnt been used in 3 months.

Plugged it in and BAM — charging in under a minute and fully charged in an hour. Say what you will about apple believe me I have end of the day their shit just works!

Just luck of the draw I’m afraid, like it’s been mentioned by me, a few others in this thread, we’ve had issues with iPhones as well, in my case, I’ve had 3 out 4 iPhones replaced, the forth I just lived with a faulty home button, yet I’ve never ever had an issue with any Samsung phone I’ve owned.

I have had it for around 5 months and I am the second owner. So it has to be at least 7 months old now. Even though I haven’t experienced this issue, I have been reading a fair bit.

It seems that a lot of people’s S3s are dying during charge overnight It is a piece of crap. It does not even charge my phone now. I have a few of these Samsung “U2” cables which seem to be more secure when plugged in and they actually charge my phone.

There is a certain type that is flagged as vulnerable for the sudden death issue. However, my chip is different. Might be worth it for everyone to check their chip type when they receive their new phone or for anyone who still has a working S3.

Well according to the test, i have the dodgy chip, so lets wait and see what happens, purchased in July. Well, according to the test my phone also has the volnurable chip. As I understand this chip was used in majority of phones built and then Sudden Death statistic doesn’t support the fact the chip is volnurable.

Sooo, I picked up my phone from the Telstra shop yesterday. They’ve replaced the motherboard and upgraded it to 4. They’ve also compensated me with a one-month bill credit due to the delay in the repair.

Not happy with the almost 3 weeks it took to repair, but happy with David at the Tech Bar in the Telstra Shop on Edward St in Brisbane as he genuinely did everything he could to assist me, even as the shop was undergoing a managerial change.

Latest open source Samsung update 7 Kernel code confirms: The patch is applied at run time, non-permanent. Unknown what official Samsung firmwares have the fix. Samsung is notorious for bad customer service. They’re happy to sell you the phone, but a total pain in the ass if you want support after the fact. I had a nightmare trying to get my Galaxy S fixed two years ago, doesn’t seem like much has changed.

That’s the kernel I use. I didn’t even know it had the fix until I went back and read the changelogs. Supposedly the runtime fix is only set to run with a very specific date in the actual 0xf1 firmware revisions.

The fix was found in these previous kernels so far I dont know what Samsung was thinking putting death sticks in the note 2 aswell WTF but it seem the LTE verison of the note 2 is using the new emmc sticks and is unaffected.

You take it back they try to get out of paying for a replacement and you will either get a replacement or you won’t depending on what it is and who they deem is at fault. For example a power supplys fails its a warranty, so you take it back wait two weeks get a new one but lose money because it cost you in time and money.

Can anyone help please? I been trying so hard to change my email address from my Samsung s, 3, mini. I made a few mistakes with words and I like, stuck. I tried to change it but everytime I am hitting a brick wall.

First thing I did was using the same mini Sim card that I used on other phones for many years; Since it worked on last 3 regular cell phones with no problem. After intensive search on the internet with some suggestions such as set Network mode to GSM only etc.

At one time, I almost wanted to return my phone to Amazon. But I gave it one more try but go to T-Mobile and tell them to transfer my number to a newer sim. T-mobile store may give you a sim for free of charge, but since I have three newer sim card that I never used before.

I have had it for around 5 months and I am the second owner. So it has to be at least 7 months old now. Even though I haven’t experienced this issue, I have been reading a fair bit. It seems that a lot of people’s S3s are dying during charge overnight It is a piece of crap.

It does not even charge my phone now. I have a few of these Samsung “U2” cables which seem to be more secure when plugged in and they actually charge my phone. No idea if it is going to help anyone but I just wouldn’t use the stock Samsung cable, something is odd about them.

Even my three mates who have had S3s have had weird charging issues and I’ve switched them over to other cables. Except when it doesn’t. This meme is a classic case of confirmation bias.

However, my chip is different. Might be worth it for everyone to check their chip type when they receive their new phone or for anyone who still has a working S3. Well according to the test, i have the dodgy chip, so lets wait and see what happens, purchased in July.

Well, according to the test my phone also has the volnurable chip. As I understand this chip was used in majority of phones built and then Sudden Death statistic doesn’t support the fact the chip is volnurable.

But lets wait and see what happens. I still have months before it fails purchased in December — according to the same statistic. But it states that the brick bug is not present.

Sooo, I picked up my phone from the Telstra shop yesterday. They’ve replaced the motherboard and upgraded it to 4. They’ve also compensated me with a one-month bill credit due to the delay in the repair.

Not happy with the almost 3 weeks it took to repair, but happy with David at the Tech Bar in the Telstra Shop on Edward St in Brisbane as he genuinely did everything he could to assist me, even as the shop was undergoing a managerial change.

Hi just got told my phone in the Samsung tech centre for another week tech is waiting for a part to test it and i had to ring to find out, they couldnt ring, for gods sake go on the net and see that you have a HUGE problem, all up service is crap all round, for gods sake this is your frickin problem you stuffed up so replace my phone, as for the email i sent to Samsung no email back, if you read my earlier posts i got an email back but since then nothing, just watch, i will make their lives hell, we pay top dollar for the phone with no service.

Samsung is notorious for bad customer service. They’re happy to sell you the phone, but a total pain in the ass if you want support after the fact. I had a nightmare trying to get my Galaxy S fixed two years ago, doesn’t seem like much has changed.

Well my nightmare is just beginning but there’s will start very soon, im not going to let this go, every day on different forums around the world more and more phones are dieing so if they will not come out and say they have a problem maybe Apple need to know, ive had it with Samsung.

That’s the kernel I use. I didn’t even know it had the fix until I went back and read the changelogs. Supposedly the runtime fix is only set to run with a very specific date in the actual 0xf1 firmware revisions.

The fix was found in these previous kernels so far I dont know what Samsung was thinking putting death sticks in the note 2 aswell WTF but it seem the LTE verison of the note 2 is using the new emmc sticks and is unaffected.

You take it back they try to get out of paying for a replacement and you will either get a replacement or you won’t depending on what it is and who they deem is at fault. For example a power supplys fails its a warranty, so you take it back wait two weeks get a new one but lose money because it cost you in time and money.

How many got a free replacement phone when clearly there was a problem with the iphone 4 Antennagate? It amazes me how good their hardware is, and some of the worst coding disasters to go right along with it.

I think this might be the tipping point with the dev. As if Samsung holding back the Exynos sources wasn’t bad enough I might have to give a long hard evaluation for my next Android device. But who am I kidding?

I’ve had all sorts of tech die on me, including iPhones and Sony mobiles, you should understand this is how service repairs are done, we’ve all been through this with different tech.

Don’t tell me that’s not iPhone premium territory. I woke up yesterday morning to discover that my SGS3 had ceased to function got it on June 1st. Seemingly the same as everyone else in this thread — wouldn’t turn on no matter what I did.

I bought a new battery before work as I thought this might be the issue, though that didn’t change things. Standard procedure — I left it on charge over night, woke up about 4am and unplugged it.

Two hours later woke again and it was dead. Took it into Vodafone, they replaced it on the spot with a refurbished model — which was in better condition looks brand new than mine which had some scratches and dents on the plastic from wear and tear.

Fortunately had everything backed up in the cloud including photos, music, SMS so it only ended up costing me about 3 hours of my life to mess around with it until it was configured the way I like it.

Good result in the end — and very happy with Vodafone. Interestingly, Vodafone didn’t do any checks on it. They trusted me completely when I went in there and described what had happened.

They swapped it instantly. I could’ve dropped that thing in the pool for all they knew. I had loaded a modified OS and rooted it too — though I guess if they couldn’t turn it they wouldn’t know that.

Hi sorry, i am a bit pissed off as i have to ring the tech centre myself to find out what is happening to my phone, the people at the Vodafone shop didn’t have a clue and and were practically saying that it may be self damage and i might have to pay for it to get fixed, we pay top dollar, dont we deserve some customer care and service.

My S3 died a week before xmas. I woke up and the charge light was still on, I thought it was strange as it should of finished charging. I unplugged it and no sign of life.

Anyway, I sent it back to the guys in Granville and they had it fixed in a few days. I would of received it just before xmas but Australia post lost my parcel for 2 weeks.

It’s all working now, I changed to the UK rom and running 4. All in all, I’m happy with the warranty service, it was just aus post that caused my delay. Have rooted my phone and after 4. So I used triangle away and unrooted my S3 to official just in case it died on me, for warranty.

Still learning at the moment! I would personally flash to ELL4, which apparently has the same runtime patch. I would then do a full wipe from within recovery Backup First, in the hopes that if your eMMC is on the fritz, the patch MAY help get things back to normal.

K updates OTA, or via Kies. Seeing as your phone is already bricked, just take it into the store you bought it from, tell them the story and get it fixed. If they disagree, just demand that the phone died on you and it’s their responsibility to fix it.

It does sound like a bit of work, but a worthy project in my opinion. Got mine back from the Telstra store today, took it on New Years Eve. They replaced the main board and all is well again!

Regardless of your screen getting fixed by a third party, don’t bring it up. So my S3 bit the dust today at the day mark. Sent a text on it then came back a few minutes later to see if I had a reply and it was sitting at the splash screen.

Couldn’t power it off so had to pop the battery out. Turning it back on would only bring up the same “Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I” splash screen and it would boot no further. Tried the three finger salute but couldn’t even get it into recovery mode.

Called up Samsung who gave me the address of the service centre in Granville and took it there this afternoon. Lady at the service counter told me it would be at least three to four days to repair as they were having delays with parts.

Interestingly the guy who was served ahead of me was also dropping off an SGS3. Like some others I did get some warning signs of the impending doom. I first noticed it on New Years day when I started getting serious lag issues that were not resolved even with several power cycles.

Eventually after about half a day normality returned but it was enough to get me searching the net where I discovered this ‘Sudden Death’ issue. All I can say is that if your handset starts inexplicably lagging it’s probably time to start doing daily backups as it may not be long for this world.

So taking into account it would not of been picked up untill the 2nd due to New years day being a public holiday, it took 8 days. Can I ask, but when you guys talk about OTA, does that mean doing it via 3g, or over home wireless as well?

Having it fail totally is probably a good thing; if the fix comes through then my understanding is that it will stop new errors from being created — existing bad blocks aren’t repairable. Over the air is receiving the update either by 3G or wireless.

The update gets sent over the network to the phone. I’ve clarified my poorly worded reponse on Crowd Support now. I’m guessing that the current Telstra 4. Maybe some chance the fix was merged over but only Samsung would know.

So, seeing the importance of this new patch to rollout as soon as possible, what is the thinking behind the rollout? Would Samsung rollout to the countries with the most sales first to limit damage?

And if so, I would assume Australia would be lower down the list. Also the patch I assume would have to cover 4. Australia has only received 4. Being a novice in this field, would the patch be a generic patch for both 4.

I’m still on hols and do haven’t applied the update that came thru around xmas time. So what chance would I have of getting the fix if I reflashed, say, with a UK 4.

Knowing the speed of getting updates through Telstra, there will be a huge pile of dead S3’s out there, and mine will probably be on it.. I’m no expert just been reading XDA a lot.

As far as I know it makes no difference if you upgrade to JB or not. Bug seems to be present in any versions created prior to late December Only thing we can do is nag Telstra and hope or load a non-Telstra version and probably void warranty.

I had my S3 on charger all night — was working fine since 4. No lags or problems. Picked it up, and saw it was still charging — thought it was weird as it should have finished charging. My phone started rebooting itself then hours later wouldn’t go past the SII logo.

I’m with Virgin but I called Samsung first. They got me to try to get it to go to recovery over the phone and it wouldn’t so told me to take it to a fonebiz repair centre to be fixed.

Luckily there was one close by. The guy there didn’t ask any questions and just said yeah we have had about 10 of these this week and there is a delay of about a week and a half as they have so many to do.

The good news is that they didn’t squabble about fixing it for a second! No questions asked if you are worried He said it was mostly the models from July to September with the issue plus some of the new red ones.

Glad I didn’t go to Virgin first and have their level of delay on top Hopefully you can get your phone fixed without too much drama and it doesn’t take too long! Gotta admit that it makes you reevaluate the iPhone when you can make an appointment at the Apple store and get your handset swapped out right away with a new one in no time at all and restore from backup instantly.

Yeah, I don’t have a backup as the Kies software is a pile of crap — takes forever to do a backup and becomes unresponsive. But not a big deal. So used to it. I could never go iphone, I would put up with a boat load of shit to not have an iphone.

I switched to MyPhoneExplorer — works a treat. I’ve yet to take my phone to the dealer but I have tried everything. It is effectively a dud. Never been wet, minor drops and never anything loaded than Play Store software.

It happened without warning. The phone was taken from my pocket and it was stuck on the Galaxy boot screen. Now it won’t even get that far. I just installed the emmc-check app ran it and got NO.

My wife was on the phone to someone on Friday morning, hung up, put it on the desk and next time she looked over it was at the boot logo. Took it back to Dick Smith where we bought it outright on 1st June this year and they said it would be a 3 week!!!

Hopefully it just gets fixed and comes back with the new revision mainboard and we never have to worry about it again. It’s been around days of ownership so it falls right in the perfect time zone.

I’m a little worried about a tiny crack in the bottom left of the screen which resulted from the phone being dropped on a tiled floor back in early December. I actually ordered a new screen a few weeks back but it was delayed in shipping and only turned up Friday afternoon after dropping the phone off Friday morning — dammit!

It might be like a batch of computers where “a lot” have bad powers supplies, or monitors. All you can do is replace the ones that fail. And if this is the case, then they donknow how many will fail.

There may be hundreds more, it may start to ease off? I juswish they could say. Have also seen batch that “all” ofa particular hdd was failing, and in that case they ended up replacing all of them, broken or not Its easy to see why they don’t tells us what’s happening, I doubt may other companies would either unless they had to, but it would be nice to know more.

K, and hopefully make their way down here soon. You can always take matters into your own hands and flash the U. K firmware yourself if you really wanted. If there were a real lot of them, Samsung would judge that the impact on its brand of doing nothing might be significant, and issue a recall.

The fact that they haven’t suggests there are not that many failing as a percentage of the total phones out there. Sidenote, CustomROMs must surely be better The 3G version or 4G as well?

Only Samsung truly knows at this point in time Hi guys earlier on in this post i mentioned that i emailed Samsung on the 3rd of Jan about my sudden death problem, and that i had already sent it to a Samsung tech centre in Melbourne just so it can get fixed quicker than them sending by courier in a couple of days time and then sending it to Sydney, the Melbourne tech centre have fixed it and are sending it back tomorrow i hope, fingers crossed.

Samsung sent me an email requesting my phone info and they would assign a case manager. I sent them all the info and that my phone was off to the tech centre as i needed it back quickly. Got a call back today from Samsung and the girl says we can send a courier out there today to pick up your phone this is 10 days later after i sent the email and take it to Sydney for repairs, i said when i sent you the email i stated that that i had sent it for repairs and the tech centre has fixed it and they will be sending it back tomorrow WTF is wrong with this company, i told them i want to talk to someone high up, im appalled with their lack of customer service and support, she said give me your mobile number and i will get someone to ring you up Round 3 coming, this company is so incompetent, i have never come across such bad customer service.

Considered flashing to UK but have decided against it. I have the bad chip and my phone is quite laggy. Decided not to risk warranty and thought if this is the beginnings of Sudden death it might be to late for the UK firmware to fix my phone.

Damage might already have been done. Notice my phone from time to time has been getting very hot!! So, at this point in time if it dies hopefully they will fix it and if an official Aussie fix arrives soon hopefully that will fix it.

Hi Aalex i sent a copy of the receipt to the repair centre with the phone, yes it was stock and 6 months old and the only way a Samsung phone gets replaced with a new one is when it is one month old or less.

I’m getting a courier to pick it up for me Unless of course the customer care centre is a subbie and will repair it anyway as they get paid. Just curious, I’ve got Checkrom running on my S3 at the moment but I think the early signs of sudden death are creeping in Phone has become laggy over the last couple of days.

If my phone experiences sudden death, will I be charged by Samsung for them fixing this problem once they fix it and see that I don’t have stock firmware on it? Mine is one of the affected models and would be due to die in about a months time. My already low estimation of Samsungs software prowess has gotten even lower now.

I’m just glad at least Sony are moving back to microSD so I will have more options next time. Hopefully other manufacturers follow suit now too. It wasn’t until i pulled the battery and it still wouldn’t start that i realised it was really really dead this time.

Seems to me, the bigger the company in any industry, the more protracted the customer service is, welcome to the real world, wait till you deal with insurance companies, network carriers, or any company that’s national or multi-national, you just know after a while, and expect this is how things work.

If this issue is as big as it seems, then Samsung should put out a recall. Perhaps it isn’t that big, in terms of devices failing as a faction of total sold? No it seems not, as it’s not getting much media attention, if it was happening to a decent percentage of phones it would be main stream news.

I don’t think any company will do a product recall unless the product jeopardises safety. How big is the problem — only Samsung knows and I guess the stats won’t be released to general public. That really makes me feel uncertain carrying the phone in my pocket — bad for Samsung reputation.

Hopefully Samsung one day will make a statement on the issue. I have sold through my outlets hundreds and hundreds of GS3’s over the last 6 months probably over a thousand actually and only TWO have come back with this problem.

It all depends whether it partially dead, or completely dead Custom binary phones are still getting fixed though. Well that would be one positive. As mentioned before have held off with customROMs but had to root yesterday to utilise TitaniumBackup.

If they are fixing customROM phones then they would hopefully most likely not bork at just a rooted phone running stock ROM Read some guides about unrooting the phone but they all seem to suggest loading a stock ROM from scratch.

Samsung say it’s a small issue, but I’m not so sure. Any 16gb model with the faulty firmware is essentially a ticking time bomb till its demise. Luckily we are the ones who know about it and can flash the appropriate software, but what about Joe public who doesn’t read up on tech news?

Not very nice for their phone to just die on them. I know I’d be extremely pissed if my phone just died on me one day. Hear what you are saying and would also suggest that the silent majority don’t understand the technical side of the phones let alone the specific issue which seems to eMMC related.

In some ways it is handy not to know about the bug, ignorance is bliss in this case because Especially since some of us purchased these phones with specific use cases in mind and are now questioning whether the device is fit for purpose.

I agree with that. If I still had my S3 and heard about this news, I don’t know if I’d bother flashing the ‘safe’ rom on it. I’d probably just just rid of it immediately. I use my phone a lot for work, so I really can’t afford for it to just die on me.

I noticed throughout the day it was a bit glitchy listening to music poweramp installed on the phone memory, music on the micro SD. Received a message while driving last night and checked it when I got home.

Could not unlock it, the screen was dark and only the blue notification light was flashing. Tried turning it off, nothing, Tried the three finger salute, nothing. Unfortunately, this problem seems widespread and there’s nothing you could have done to avoid it aside from voiding your warranty and flashing a rom to it. Supposedly there’s a fix being pushed out, but sad to hear your phone died before it was available.

I won’t pay a cent when I know screen cracks clearly weren’t the problem. There are phones that have never ran any custom software, that are showing a custom binary when they die out Samsung knows this, and are replacing pretty much everything that comes into the service centres..

How is a consumer supposed to defend themselves if the phone altered the binary count itself? Are all 3rd party phone repairers taking in phones, regardless of binary counter?

This is the first case I have ever seen of it When the chip dies, the product name that displays GT-I remains blank, and the binary custom. I think Samsung have fixed the issue though, as occasionally my phone would say “modified” in the system status.

A reboot would bring everything back to normal. This is on a completely stock firmware. My phone has an uptime of hours, and everything is normal. That’s one reason, yes.

Another is when they judge that the harm to their brand reputation is worse if they do nothing. If a lot of phones die and the talk spreads as it will on social media this could well happen.

Sounds promising, I guess. To give some balance to the people trying to portray this as a worldwide catastrophe and that everyone has a phone that has brocken down, I pulled stats from my system to get more accurate figures than what I thought.

I can keep people updated if they want. All have been back within 8 days of being sent to Service, thats from drop off to back into store. Makes me relieved, as i recently went back to my iPhone 4s.

From your tiny sample size with unverified data, that’s hardly anything conclusive. Surely not going to take your word for it. For Samsung to recognise it as an issue implies that the issue is prevalent and they certainly wouldn’t want word to get around just how many of these things are dying.

I’m sure they would have wanted to keep this hush hush, however the number of dead SGS3’s continued to rise and word got around which forced them to make a statement to downplay the occurrence.

I’m wondering how well Samsung test their devices. Not long ago there were security exploits found in the Exynos SoC and now this sudden death issue that’s plaguing quite a few customers. My sample size is better than a few people saying they have the problem, like in this thread.

Or you’re sample size of NOTHING, as you sold your phone, and have posted plenty times about how this is a big thing, without a shred of data to back it up other than some people posting and blogging about it on the interwebs.

All these people rampaging about wanting new phones and that Samsung should recall all GS3’s thats 40 million mind you are just ignorant IMO. Most phones have gliches but the Galaxy Sudden Death fault is a biggie considering you lose the use of the phone for a week.

I’m glad Samsung are addressing the issue, but feel sorry for people who suffer sudden death but are refused warranty because of some unrelated issue or damage. I feel sympathetic to them also, but all of the brands will deny warranty on any fault even Apple if there is any physical damage, even if the physical damage has nothing to do with the fault.

Anything from Samsung, ranging from a simple acknowledgement, to a SW fix, right up to a full recall, is just a commercial decision based on perceived threat to reputation vs. I’m sure they know what percentage of phones have been affected so far, and have a fair idea of how many are likely to be affected.

That info would be commercial in confidence, so we’re never going to know, but it would be nice to have some idea of the size of it. Called Virgin Carindale where I bought the phone.

They said if you return it they will take roughly 2 weeks to send it to sydney for repairs and they didn’t have a loan phone. They don’t repair phones there and was told to goto Fonebiz at Chermside.

They didn’t have a loan phone so it looks like I will have to head over to fonebiz Chermside for a repair and hopefully organise a loan phone. I think that might be the quickest turnaround. In the market for a tablet at the moment and I was considering a note Would I drive around in a car I didn’t like for the only reason they have better service and parts?

Will be switching back to an Iphone at least if it fails it will be replaced promptly. I was thinking of purchasing a Note but have decided against based on current experience.

Have downloaded the emmc brick bug application and have the identified bug. Before I checked as only just become aware have flashed UK firmware ell4. Phone is running fine and never been better touch wood.

K update cycle if you want. Hmmmm my friends S3 just died on him yesterday. He has asked me to look into it I am everyone’s free tech support. But it looks like that is completely dead. Will Samsung be issuing a recall?

It seems like a widespread issue. I’m guessing if it was an insignificant number of devices dying as some users here suggest then Samsung wouldn’t have commented on it and acknowledge the problem, but it seems as it’s big enough for them to make a statement about it, even though I’m sure they wouldn’t want to.

IMO, getting this update out to fix the issue should be their 1 priority. Millions of people have the phone and they’re all potential targets. Looks like a whole lot of GT firmware releases dated 7.

Well, that makes me the 56th person on this thread that has had their Galaxy S3 die! For the record, a 16GB 3G from Telstra. Only had stock standard ROMS — inc.

Been a bit laggy for a few weeks but I had put that down to the phone memory pretty full with installed apps. Looked up someone’s phone number, then about half an hour later Not defending Samsung as I think their products quality is junk, but the sorts of bugs that are happening arent obvious bugs.

Agree some of their stuff is half-baked and unpolished at times, but I think if they knew this issue was going to happen, they wouldn’t put the parts in the phones, the costs in support alone wouldn’t be worth it.

From my understanding of the work around they have in place for affected phones, it only appears to target chips of a specific date Im not sure how we can identify which exact chips are affected as the eMMC tool seems to produce unusual dates.

Well the Mrs S3 just died, on way to Virgin at fountain gate its under 6 months old lets hope she will get a new one What will happen is they’ll send the phone off to be fixed where they’ll replace the board.

Should take at least a week or two to repair and send back. It won’t be a new phone, it’ll be her same phone just with a new board. Yep, my friend’s “new” iphone 4S as exchange had even more problems than his original!

Running back to the closest Apple store Brisbane and reloading his settings twice didn’t make him like Apple’s service. He also got a phone with an unknown age for his 6 month old phone in new condition.

So waiting for repair of your phone is not so bad in some cases, but old for new replacements would be a nice inclusion on new flagship phones from all brands. Oh and I forgot to mention, while your phone is being sent to Samsung or whoever to be fixed, you won’t get a replacement phone to use in the mean time.

My GS3 bricked itself on the weekend — put it on to charge on Saturday night and woke up Sunday morning to find it deader than a dodo. Took it to Samsung in the city and they wouldn’t do anything without an appointment which I understand.

So I set up an appointment and will get it addressed. Nothing more I can really hope for than that. Sure I would’ve liked to have them replace it on the spot, but they have their processes they need to work to.

While it is frustrating, it’s technology and technology has a habit of breaking when you don’t want it to and there’s nothing you can do about it except be patient and accept it.

I don’t think going selling it and moving to another brand is going to achieve much because you can pretty much be guaranteed something will happen to that phone as well.

Samsung is addressing the issue and that’s all you can hope for really seeing as the issue has occurred already and they can’t go back in time to fix it unless they secretly have a DeLorean hidden away somewhere If mine ever suffers from the same fate or if anything goes wrong I will just send it off for warranty service, use my backup phone for upto 10 days, and all will be sorted: Went into the Telstra store and explained it and the surrounding commentary and acknowledgement from Samsung.

I went in this morning and another guy was like “it takes two to three weeks”. I’m getting to the bottom of this. A couple of days I can handle but any longer is ridiculous. Any other type of product, if it breaks, you get it replaced or you know a timeline to when it’s going to be fixed.

Tried my luck at one CBD store later, and immediately got a new replacement GS3 in a sealed box and all. Was told that since the failure happened within the first 4 months of the contract, it was a direct swap, no questions asked.

I’m just crossing my fingers that this unit won’t suffer the same fate down the road. But I’m doing my backups weekly now, just in case! Just checked my software update and there is a 90Mb patch to download OTA although Kies did not register any update.

Came out pretty quick if it’s 4. Interesting, I got only What build does it report after update. A little smoother and quicker when navigating screens. Mine died first, then 3 of my friends’ SGS3s died too.

Also noticed a huge scratch mark on the screen, thank god i had a screen protector on it, what the hell is this company’s customer service policy. Also i had told them a week ago to change the address from my home address to my work address, and guess what they sent it to my home address.

As i was tracking i freaked when i saw that it had been delivered but not at my work so there i was calling Australia Post to see where it was, my other half then rings me and tells me its in our letter box.

Now the big question have they done any work on my phone cause there is nothing letting me know what was done, and its at the same Android version when i sent it 4. So I dropped mine in for a mainboard replacement at Chermside in Brisbane today.

I’d say a good bit have had a custom binary. One of the signs of Sudden Death. In download mode, no product name identification, with a false custom binary reading That’s why almost everyone’s phones are getting repaired, whether legitimately customised, or a false reading of the binary.

I’m sure Fonebiz has been made aware of the situation. I feel sorry for the early deaths that came back un-repaired due to a false reading. I feel sorry for everyone that has had this problem.

Having a second phone is always important, IMO. I also have a second Sim in my second phone with a basic prepaid deal. Second phone is a S. My new put it in perspective story for this year is, ‘My friends lost their house in the Coonabarabran fires’ which helps put our phone stresses in context.

Mine couldn’t even get into download mode. Just call Samsung directly. On XDA there a bundle of people returning it with custom roms. Seems like a pretty big issue. Wondering if that stability patch being pushed out fixes the issue.

Mine has SDS and now I need to send it back to get it fixed. Mine died mid November. Phone became more and more sluggish and after charging it one night I found it stuck at the Samsung boot screen.

Returned to Vodafone under warranty. Was only after I contacted the ombudsman that they kicked into high gear and returned my phone the next day. Had the fixed phone for less then a month, it started getting laggy and randomly reboots all the time.

Complained to Vodafone, they’ve now sent me a replacement SGS3. Hope this one won’t crap out on me later. But what if they needed to use their phone in that emergency situation, and it was dead!!!

That’s why its always wise to have a second phone. Whenever I go on hols etc, I always have a second phone, even a spare Sim from another provider is worth considering.

Anyway, our friends didn’t have mobile reception at their farm. As hard as it is to realise, many rural areas have poor or no coverage. Nealry every Samsung sent through in a timely manner eg: There is some small excpetions waiting for parts, public holidays ect but this may add a few days to it.

I think the store was lazy and may have not of sent the phone for a few weeks, which is unacceptable! One minute it was working fine, then the next it refused to power on.
