As I brought the phone to Brazil, the phone Where do I find my USB icon? Where do I find the option to turn auto rotate on and off after the Marshmallow update? Under Lollipop the “quick setting” menu had an option to turn auto rotate on or off.

These Samsung cellphones are flagships, so they get priority, but the wait is still usually months long. For now they all run Android Marshmallow, though. The Nexus 6P offers a lot of Material Design elements, such as the pull-down notification shade.

Simply swipe down once to show the notifications and twice to expand your shortcuts. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S7 only requires one swipe down to show everything. One cool feature the Samsung devices have is the ability to view multiple apps at once, but that is something Nexus 6P users will also be able to do later this year, when Android N is released.

As it stands, the Nexus 6P is all about simplicity, which is great, but also means features can be lacking. The Galaxy S7 Edge is especially unique, thanks to its curved sides and added functionality.

Edge Panels allow you to customize a special area that can be pulled from the side. Here you can find shortcuts to weather, news, mail, taking selfies and more. Furthermore, People Edge will also allow you to quickly get in touch with your favorite contacts.

This make for a very nice way to organize your phone without cluttering your home screen with all kinds of widgets and shortcuts. The Nexus 6P has Ambient Display, which I prefer a lot more as it actually lights up the phone in a black and white mode as notifications come in, allowing you to see incoming notifications without powering on your screen.

Once you disable certain laggy apps and widgets, like the Briefing screen, you have a very solid software experience. As it stands, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Nexus 6P have some of the best cameras in the smartphone market.

This makes it a very tough call to say which is better, as both cameras will create amazing photos. This year Samsung lowered the megapixel count from 16 to 12, while making the pixels larger to allow more light in.

The NExus 6P uses a similar technique. The main thing to take away here is that the Galaxy S7 seems to take much more vibrant shots, with great highlight control and saturated colors.

Meanwhile, the Nexus 6P seems to be better at exposing shots properly. The Nexus will show more details in bright areas like skies and clouds. The Nexus 6P does seem to have more issues with shadows and you will find more detail in the highlights, but when things get darker you start losing quality.

You will also notice the Samsung Galaxy S7 tends to offer more post-processing sharpening. This vibrance and sharpness will make it seem as though the S7 produces better images at first glance, but closer eamination will show the Nexus 6P takes shots with more information.

If you are a fan of full manual mode, you will also prefer the Samsung Galaxy S7, which does offer that nifty treat. The Nexus 6P gets rid of noise and boosts colors to make for gorgeous shots.

And yes, the Nexus 6P does seem to be better at low-light photography. This is because that wide-angle lens is phenomenal. You will begin to lose a lot of detail once you move to an area that is not outdoors, though.

The Nexus 6P falls apart in video mode, stuttering to find the right exposure and focus. In image detail and exposure, the Nexus 6P is definitely better, although when it comes to image control, color representation and video, the Galaxy S7 is the winner.

So… which one is the better phone? This is likely one of the toughest comparisons we have done.

The Galaxy S7 edge looks very similar, although the rear camera lens does sit more flush with the rest of the device in the new handset. The S7 edge is quite a bit larger than its predecessor measuring It is also a little heavier, hitting the scales at g.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge features a 5. This is the feature that sets it apart from the Galaxy S6 and it is also the feature that helped this device grab headlines when it launched.

The display means users will still be able to see various pieces of important information without the need to turn the main display on. According to Samsung, the Always On feature uses less than one per cent battery per hour but it can also be switched off if you don’t want it.

The Galaxy S6 edge comes with a megapixel rear camera, coupled with a 5-megapixel front camera. There is a megapixel rear camera sensor with larger 1. There is a mAh battery.

The Galaxy S7 edge on the other hand, will be coming in two variants depending on the operator and region. A quad-core model and an octa-core model will arrive with the octa-core chip being the next generation Exynos 8 Octa processor.

It is this model that will be available in the UK and Europe, as well as some other regions. Wireless charging is on board both the S6 edge and the S7 edge. The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge launched with the latest version of Android at the time, along with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface over the top.

The Galaxy S7 edge will launch with Marshmallow from the box. These cracks have tended to grow too, so something that looks insignificant at first could turn into a large crack after a few weeks of use.

In contrast, the S6 Edge only offers thin metal to grip and the curve goes in the wrong direction for it it to be ergonomically satisfying. Another issue we had with the Edge variant was that it is too easy to touch the edges of the screen by accident whilst holding the phone, which renders intentional touches unregistered.

Using the standard S6, we found signal strength to be consistently strong, even underground when using EE Wireless Calling. Beyond its good looks, the curves of the S6 Edge provide some additional functionality, none of them are killer features but they do make the phone feel just that little bit more futuristic.

You can designate up to five contacts from your list to appear as one of five coloured lines on the edge of the home screen. A white line at the top allows you to access your Edge Contacts at any time, saving you from having to find them in your contact list.

One of the smaller, but more intriguing, features is how you can set the edge to function as a notification light when the phone is faced down. It can also combine with the People Edge mode and be set to glow a specific colour when a particular person calls.

This means you can work out who is calling when the phone is face down. If nothing else, it looks cool. What can the curved screen actually do? The edge can also double as a bedside clock with Night Clock mode.

When the phone is in sleep mode, a quick swipe up and down will illuminate the edge. Are these additional features worth the extra money? The S6 Edge is naturally more expensive and will be produced in more limited quantities because the curved screen is harder to manufacture.

As we noted above, the main appeal is simply the novelty factor and style that the edge display provides. It truly stands out in a crowd of phones that are becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart.

Do you prefer the S6 or the S6 Edge? Let us know in the comments section below. By Max Parker August 31,

Now synonymous with springtime, Samsung’s latest premium smartphone offering has arrived and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s also narrower than most of its direct competitors, making it easier to handle if you’ve not got massive mitts.

Samsung has also managed to find space for a headphone port too, something Apple didn’t do for its flagship iPhone 7. Samsung Galaxy S8 also has a wider range of colours, resolution options and brightness than the previous versions.

In terms of megapixels only the front camera has been improved, a welcome addition for selfie lovers. The rear camera also now sits flush with the back of the phone. It’s been reported that Samsung has improved load speeds, while using less battery than some competitors: The S8 also offers faster 4G and the latest Bluetooth 5.

Many will enjoy TouchWiz, the version of Android this device uses, for its neat little functions like video split screen. And while you can also unlock it with its iris scanner and facial recognition, worryingly, this can be hacked using a photograph.

Who would this phone suit? Those who need the highest level of performance from their smart phone, as the S8 has been described as the most powerful phone on the market.

Design-wise it’s also made leaps and bounds meaning this may be the biggest threat to Apple to date. You’ll need deep pockets though as it comes with a hefty price tag.

A lot stayed the same but benefits included the capacity for removable storage and water resistance. An extra speaker would’ve been a welcome addition and made it more worthy of the eye-watering price-tag.

The display size stayed the same but Samsung managed to create a slightly shorter and narrower handset giving it a nicer feel in the hand. One of the key additions to the 32 and 64GB models is the ability to use removable storage up to GB.

The S7 is also waterproof like one of its previous incarnations the S5. This feature isn’t foolproof however, it’s only waterproof up to 5 feet and for 30 minutes, you’ll also have to dry the charging port before you plug in.

Unsurprisingly, the processor and memory has been upgraded making for a faster and more powerful handset. Battery life and charging speed has also seen an improvement. Although the number of megapixels been downgraded from 16MP to 12MP some additional features like dual-pixel sensor will see brighter snaps, better focus and the wider lens means you can fit more into your shot.

With a wide range of modes available cellular photographers will be happy especially in low-light conditions where significant improvements have been made. The S7 Edge was unveiled at the same time as the S7, apart from the 5.

If you’re after more screen than the S7 you’ll pay for the benefit. Like the S7, the Edge is waterproof but the improvement from the S6’s battery life is more noticeable. A larger display with the same number of pixels does mean that it isn’t quite as sharp as the S7.

Although it is slightly thinner than it’s sibling, it is taller, wider and a touch heavier. It has a side-swiping functionality meaning you can access a number of features by running your finger down the edge of the screen.

The Edge is also quite handy for glancing at notifications with the phone faced screen-down. The S6 impressed reviewers on its launch, many admired its much-improved cameras, design and screen.

The S6 comes with a fingerprint scanner, the option for wireless charging and fitness fanatics will be pleased to hear its heart rate sensor is still in place. The glass and metal design has also earned high praise.

For happy snappers, the S6’s cameras were being described as some of the best on the market when it launched although the later versions will beat it, with a new easy access two-touch home button option and a launch time of just 0.

Samsung unveiled the S6 Edge at the same time, which with its curved screen was lauded as the best-looking smartphone Samsung has ever produced. While the S6 Edge is slightly lighter than the S6 it is slightly thicker.

One benefits of the Edge is the ability to check you notifications with the handset faced down. You can also have five assigned contacts you can call quickly from swiping the edge and it will glow a certain colour with the face down when one of these contacts calls.

Aside from aesthetics and the features mentioned above there really is little difference between the S6 and S6 Edge. Under regulator Ofcom’s rules, providers are permitted to increase the monthly cost of mobile contracts by as much as the rate of inflation each year, as long as they are upfront about this and warn you before you sign up.

Adjustments are made in line with figures published in February or March each year based on the Retail Prices Index a measure of inflation. You’ll be notified by your network of these changes and any bill you received after that dates will reflect the increase.

See inflationary price rises for full info. Use too few minutes, data or texts and you’ll overpay for the contract each month. Yet go over your allowance and the extra charges are costly.

Analyse how many minutes, texts and how much data you’re likely to use to get the right tariff. If you’re new to smartphones, expect to use much more data than before.

Here’s a rough guide to help you determine which type of user you are:. For info on how to calculate your exact usage, read the Cheap Mobiles guide. Our top picks and on most deals on comparison sites are geared towards new customers of the relevant network.

If you’re already with that network, even if your existing contract is up, and you try to get the deal then technically you’ll be ‘upgrading’ rather than taking out a new contract, and you may have to pay more as a result.

Of course, you can still get the deal if you take out a separate new contract. But if you do, frustratingly you won’t be able to directly transfer your existing number across to your new phone.

There is one possible way round this, though it’s a bit of work. What you can do is get the deal on a separate new contract, and also get yourself a free pay-as-you-go Sim from a different network.

Port your existing number across to the free pay-as-you-go Sim, then port it again to the new contract once it’s been set up. To port your number over you’ll need to request a porting authorisation code from your provider.

Unless you’re a heavy user, a standalone handset with a Sim-only deal can often be the cheapest option. See Sim-only deals for the best. Already have a Sim-only deal from an old phone?

Unless you buy a handset for that network, to put it in a new handset you’ll need to “unlock” it from its pre-set network provider. You can get cheap handsets from retailers such as Argos or Play.

Use the MegaShopBot to quickly compare prices. Most providers now offer 4G but before signing up, remember you’ll need to have a 4G-ready handset and live in an area with 4G coverage.

You’ll be able to browse the web, download music and movies, and play games on your phone at speeds up to five times faster than 3G. If speed isn’t important to you, it’s not essential.

Also keep in mind if you travel around a lot, you’ll need coverage in each area you visit. The S6 and S7 and the Edge models take a nano. If you’ve already got your perfect Sim-only deal and want to put your Sim card into a phone that takes a micro or nano Sim, speak to your network provider.

It should give you the right sized one for free. Paying more upfront for your new phone usually means a cheaper Sim-only monthly contract. If you haven’t got the ready cash though, a longer, month contract may mean no initial outlay.

If you’ve already got your Samsung phone, either a new standalone handset or a cheap second-hand one, you’ll need a Sim-only tariff. The big plus is Sim-only contracts are usually cheaper, and shorter.

Also, you won’t pay a hidden extra monthly cost for the handset, so your tariff price and overall costs will usually drop. It does mean a large initial outlay though.

For a full list of the networks’ best Sim-only offerings see Sim-only top picks. Smartphones are fast becoming the norm. If you use your phone to constantly search the web, you need to watch the amount of data you use.

As more data-hungry apps are released, it’s fair to question whether you’ll chomp through your data allowance quickly each month and wind up paying a wedge for more. For checking emails, looking at Facebook and watching the odd YouTube video, 1GB should be more than enough.

To give you a rough idea, MSE Eesha says: I tend to use close to this limit but never go over. Downloading videos, TV shows or other web-heavy apps may take you over your limit and cause you to incur heavy charges.

If you’re worried about data use, try using the free Onavo app mentioned below. Heavy downloaders could end up paying out BIG if they exceed their download allowance. Try the free app Onavo, which says it compresses data when web-browsing and using other apps such as Facebook and Twitter.

This means the same amount of surfing will only use a fraction of your data allowance, avoiding any hefty fees. It works in over 95 countries, so can help minimise expensive roaming rates too.

What does it do? It can compress data for the following, meaning you should use less MB:. What does it not do? There are a number of things Onavo cannot compress, crucially:.

How much does it cost? It’s available free on iOS and Android but Onavo says it will eventually start charging a fee for new and existing users. It will notify you before it decides to do this though.

Selling your old mobile could help you recoup some of the cost of your new one. There are two ways you can do this:. There’s huge demand for second-hand mobiles, so it’s very much a seller’s market.

If you want a guaranteed amount of cash to put towards your next handset or something else entirely, mobile recycling sites are an easy option. Usually you’ll get less than what you’d get if you listed the phone on eBay.

Accidents can and do happen. Because mobiles are worth so much more to us these days and they cost a lot more, if you lose ’em, break ’em or have ’em nicked, it can be costly to replace them.

Insurers play on this fear with hefty prices and unnecessary cover. Read the full Mobile Insurance guide for full info and best buys. It’s often possible to grab extra cashback on top when you sign up for a mobile phone contract.

To get it, you need to sign up via a specialist cashback website rather than directly with the network provider. Cashback websites use affiliate links to generate revenue, so if they get paid when you sign up, you’ll get paid.

Unfortunately this cash is never guaranteed, as sometimes cashback sites don’t track deals in progress, so it’s generally best to pick the right tariff first and view any cashback as an added extra.

To find out more about how these sites can pay you, and how you can make the most of them, read the full Cashback Sites guide. Don’t confuse cashback sites with cashback you can get directly through a retailer, through redemption.

This kind of cashback isn’t straightforward, and can often require you to send several copies of your monthly bills on certain days. We rarely include these kinds of deals, unless they’re super-cheap.

If we do include them, they’ll be mentioned in the free MoneySavingExpert. Make sure it’s unlocked see Mobile Unlocking for full info though, so you can take advantage of super-cheap Sim-only tariffs.

Some retailers automatically try to add insurance to a mobile phone contract when you sign up online, regardless of whether you want it or not. This has stung quite a few MSE users, so be sure to read all the small print, thoroughly, before clicking the ‘buy’ button.

If you cancel over the phone, ask the company to email you with confirmation of the cancellation, so you have it in writing too. Read the full Mobile Insurance guide for how to get the cheapest standalone mobile cover.

Losing your data, photos and contacts is a nightmare. Yet there are a number of easy ways to protect your mobile and data, many of which are free. Regardless of how expensive your phone is, the info you’ve got stored on it can also be mega-valuable, and it’s a nightmare and probably a lost cause to retrieve contacts, photos, apps, games, messages back after losing a handset.

This type of back-up is becoming increasingly common. Plug in your phone to your computer and data is synced with a server, effectively saving it to be retrieved at a button push.

Both phones also have protruding cameras, which is slightly less apparent on the Edge. Top Smartphone offers this month. We have suffered from cracks and damage to the glass front and back, with it getting damaged from even the smallest of drops.
