He is married to Chiaki Inaba. As a child, Oda was inspired by and aspired to become a artist. He submitted a character named for Yudetamago’s classic wrestling manga.

Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would also return as a recurring cameo character in Oda’s own works. He is known to add in his manga for fans to spot, including.

Oda was inspired by the creator of and,. When he was young, he liked to play soccer at school and was nicknamed Odacchi by his friends. He would later voice Odacchi in the “” short that was added to the third One Piece movie “”.

In, Oda at age 17 began his manga career starting as an assistant to three different mangakas for the weekly shonen manga magazine. In the same year he submitted his first work called for which he won second place at.

In the same year he left college as a freshman. After Jungle King finished its run in, he and Tokuhiro went on to create, it ran from to Also in the same year he moved on to work with on in During this time Oda met.

Oda drew scenes in that manga with his own art style. During and, he created other works such as, and, the last of which he would later mix with. In late, while still working with Watsuki, he created two one-shots for the upcoming manga artist showcase called and, which would become the first chapter of One Piece.

In, he later quit working with Nobuhiro to begin working on One Piece, doing many early One Piece sketches that would appear in. He planned out the early stage of One Piece chapters before he officially started it.

However, he made many changes, such as changing Boogie to, changing from being Buggy’s henchman to being a wandering swordsman, and changing appearance he was originally supposed to look like a Sumo but Oda’s editors wanted him to change it, which he did.

Later Nobuhiro Watsuki would pay a tribute to Oda by drawing the jolly roger in one chapter of Rurouni Kenshin as a picture on a bomb used by Gein, one of subordinates. Finally in July, , he drew the first chapter of his signature work, One Piece.

Having been inspired by, he made One Piece a pirate series. In, Oda did designs for the first and was happy to see getting animated. In, adopted One Piece and the staff would often meet up with Oda to discuss how to handle the series.

In, he met Chiaki Inaba, who played during the, and the two started going out, and in, they got married. In, he and his wife had a daughter. In April, Oda unexpectedly fell ill and One Piece was not released that week.

However he recovered and resumed One Piece the next week. Because of his recent illness, Oda felt the fans needed to catch up so he created. He was also involved in writing and directing the, the first movie that he actually wrote the script for, in honor of the tenth anniversary of One Piece.

In after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake disaster, Oda as well as other drew messages to the victims. Oda stated in an interview that he wanted to create a robot manga after he finished One Piece.

Later, however, he stated that after he finishes One Piece, he would take the same path Toriyama did and create short-story manga. Oda wrote the story for the tenth One Piece movie, , for the anime’s 10th anniversary.

This was the first time he wrote a script for any of the movies. Like many other mangaka, Eiichiro Oda uses his signature tools to draw his manga. To make sketches and starting steps of page-drawing, he uses like many other artists around the world, not only mangaka pencils in conjunction with erasers and an art gum eraser to fix errors.

For making corrections after inking, he uses white ink. To paint the color pages, Oda uses Copic markers, a brand of refillable color markers that several other mangaka use for that purpose.

Although it was not confirmed, he has recently shown a tendency to use watercolors for painting, too. Like many other manga artists, Oda seems to not use digital methods.

This is a characteristic he shares with many mangaka, in terms of making a manga the most handcrafted as possible. That is something that non-Japanese artists do not often do, especially Americans and Europeans, who prefer the digital way of working over the traditional tools, for its easiness and high quality.

Although is not confirmed, Oda does not seem to employ evident digital effects on his manga pages. He commented in one of the first SBS sessions that he is usually a few approximately 5 chapters farther along than the Shonen Jump ongoing chapters, having a difference of time between when a chapter is finished and sent to Shueisha to be published in the magazine of about 5 weeks sometimes more, sometimes less.

He has also commented on other occasion that he has an average of 5 assistants that help him in the inking and penciling details or backgrounds and application of adhesive graytones.

He has commented that he prefers painting black instead of using graytones, making his art almost black and white, with no gray colors. He uses graytones only to perform special effects like shadowing a character in a dramatic scene, to demonstrate an underwater panel, to show a scene in darkness or to separate planes, not to color the only exception of this is for Shanks’ hair.

Since the manga focuses on the progress of the Straw Hat crew as it journeys through the Grand Line, it is not without a “format”. Some of these were standard elements Oda had used before.

As witnessed in his other one-shots, Oda likes to put his characters in extreme situations that they must overcome. While many of the situations are quite serious, he also enjoys placing a significant amount of humor into the series.

Oda is renowned for over using the sound effect “Don” and for giving his characters their own unique. Oda also favors drawing animals, and is accountable for the numerous appearances of animals within the storyline.

He has also been reported to enjoy drawing ships for the storyline. He often adds plot elements into the storyline and comes back to them many story arcs later, frequently with plot twists related to them, such as the case with the introduction of Luffy’s grandfather, , who was simply introduced as “Garp” in a front page story arc.

He also introduced his one-shot “Monsters” into the storyline when there was no indication that any of his past works were going to be included. At the start of One Piece Oda was reported as worried about his art style.

At the time it was more favored to have big-eyed characters than it was to have the more old fashioned dot-eyed style. One Piece is also noted for its numerous bizarre and extreme character designs, which became more and more common and exaggerated as the series progressed.

One Piece’s distinct style has changed quite a bit over its decade-long run. In the beginning it used many thick lines, giving the art a round, bouncy, cartoon like look.

Over time the lines became thinner and crosshatching and line shading is now used extensively. The characters’ features have become more loose to the point where Zoro, for example, can look buffoonish one frame and a hard-boiled swordsman the next.

Luffy can appear more grown up at one point before once again becoming more child-like later on. This carries over to many other characters. Chopper did not start out looking as chibi as he does now, though he was always considered cute.

The backgrounds and layouts were more simple in comparison to more recent ones. While they were functional and well drawn, the earlier panels do not quite reach the complexity that they have now. The change in style is actually extremely appropriate, as the art seems to get more detailed and emotionally intense as the story gets progressively darker and more mature.

Ironically, in spite of its reputation, bloatware is often used as a selling point. Numerous Lenovo product pages boast of custom applications and the inclusion of a McAfee free trial. Acer, Dell and HP also highlight certain bloatware in their marketing materials.

Another way to avoid bloat is to spend more money. Asus, Dell and HP are the brands that most frequently ditch bloatware in expensive laptops. Alternatively, you can buy a laptop from a boutique brand.

Even Alienware, which is owned by Dell, ditches bloatware. As anyone familiar with these brands knows, though, going this route will limit your selection. There are some things that you must do and take care of Even those annoying McAfee and Norton trials can be removed in less than a minute.

You can also remove apps on the Windows Start Screen by right-clicking them and hitting uninstall. One issue many of you run into is not knowing which Many system PC maintenance is a chore most people postpone until it’s almost too late.

Users can make purchases in the PSN store, wake up their console, and install games with a secondary device.

This free tech demo is also updated constantly with additional free downloads that add mini-games to the experience. Users can also sign into their account on any PS4 and access their library of games provided they download a portion of it first.

This was intentionally sought out after the poor reception from developers when they tried porting games onto the PS3 from Xbox architecture. It was also a pain for developers to always have to customize game code to fit the PS3.

By unifying the way developers make games the will use the same CPU architecture, it will be cheaper overall to design and code the next generation software. The consists of eight x cores and runs concurrently with its, which consists of 18 compute units and a theoretical peak performance of 1.

However, this performance will technically never be fully realized in games or the various utilities running on the PS4 and should be considered the maximum of what the console can handle.

This is in line with midrange gaming PCs and the Xbox One hardware specs. Both the CPU and GPU will share the same memory processing pool when it comes to dedicated so that graphics processing and utility OS functions will take what they need when they need it.

Instead of the CPU holding onto a chunk of the memory pool even when not in use, the shared design ensures the console is getting the most performance when processing graphics data. The PS4 will also have a secondary custom chip for handling background OS functions like downloads, uploads, and user interface options.

While technically meaningless considering the midrange PC specs on both consoles not really requiring more beyond 8 gigabytes, the PS4 could process more information and produce less slowdown if the user is streaming games or doing something else actually requiring the full RAM pool.

For gamers wealthy enough to afford the nice television sets, the PS4 will be able to support gaming running at p with the ability to run movies and images at 4K resolution. The PS4 controller is able to charge using the ports even if the system is in standby mode, which is a major step-up from the previous console.

Honestly, who made the conscious decision not to include this feature in the PS3? New Toys and Tech Among the new and improved applications and tech features like a faster disc drive, the PlayStation 4 also comes with second screen capabilities through your, smartphone, or tablet.

Secondary screens can also wake up and log into your PS4 to initiate downloads or stream games onto another device. Sony released a new PlayStation app specifically for this feature so that users can access their system and chat with their friends on the go.

This is of course a major step forward in social gameplay that allows PS4 owners to make game time anytime. Yes, I realize that sentence sounded dangerously cheesy. I should get some cheetos.

If the user chooses, a title can be purchased and downloaded in the background without interrupting the other features on the PSN. This includes new streamed content, their newly acquired trophies, and social media uploads.

Game invitations, shared in-game gifts from friends, and newly acquired items for participating in different events will also show up on the PS4 home screen when you select specific games in your library to view.

Games will also have their own dedicated tab that you can view for further information similar to how Steam currently has their games sorted based on different hubs.

Within these game tabs, you can view what your friends have been doing in that game, their achievements, your own achievements, a newsfeed for updates and bug fixes from developers, newly gifted items received from friends or promotions, and more.

Privacy now works on a two tier system where your close friends can view your real name, location, and other detailed information while online friends can only view your online identity. When you become friends with someone, detailed information is only provided via a “Real Name Request” that you can send them.

Otherwise, only basic info is shown. Arguably one of the best new features about the PS4 is known as PlayGo, where all titles on the console can be downloaded while you play the game.

While the initial setup and install may take a while, the PS4 does not require you to install the full game in order to play. Since the PlayStation Store will have digital downloads of new titles the day physical copies are released, you could immediately start playing the next hot release right away.

The PlayStation 4 will not require a transfer fee for buying used games and while the console is not backwards capable with the PS2 or PS3, you can stream any game in the PlayStation library with the PlayStation Now cloud service.

It is currently unknown whether these titles will have to be purchased again from the PlayStation store or if Sony plans on digitizing your own library somehow.

Eye See You The has been completely redesigned for the eighth generation console to take advantage of 3D image capturing and inter-connectivity with the PS4 controller.

Aside from the increased number of cameras you get two! Previous PlayStation Move companion devices will be supported on the PS4 although there are currently no planned new features for them.

For the nitty-gritty technical specs, check out this handy table below. The DualShock 4 The PlayStation 4 controller maintains the same general shape Sony has improved the design to be more comfortable of previous DualShock controllers and improves upon existing features with new tech.

Despite being similar in appearance, the PS3 controller will not be compatible with the eighth generation console due to all the improved or new tech features crammed into the.

You still get two analog sticks, two analog triggers L2 and R2 , the iconic triangle, circle, square, and X face buttons, the L1 and R1 buttons, and four individual directional buttons.

You also get the neat-o L3 and R3 on the analog sticks. The DualShock 4 retails for. Improvements to the controller include a brand new material over the two analog sticks that Sony has claimed to be more comfortable than previous DualShocks.

They have also been redesigned to have a circular ridge along the edge of the analog sticks to increase precision when gamers play. The L3 and R3 push buttons on the analog sticks have increased responsiveness, which means something depending on how you rated the previous responsiveness on these two buttons.

The DualShock 4 will have some motion control via a three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer that the PlayStation eye will recognize. Most gamers will probably notice the rather large touchpad on the center of the controller that also acts as an additional click button.

Thus far we’ve seen this touchpad used for everything from switching weapons, to navigating maps and inventory. For PlayStation Eye support, the DualShock 4 has a built-in light bar that will transfer information from the game to the controller via different light sequences depending on the context.

A more creative use was seen in Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition where the bar would flash orange and red while holding a torch in the game. In addition to the new light bar sensor on the DualShock 4, there are also two ports for a headset and a mini-USB cable for charging purposes.

A is included with the purchase of a PS4 although there is also a mono speaker on the controller itself that delivers in-game sounds. There are two new buttons featured on the PS4 controller: The Options button located on the right side of the DualShock 4 incorporates both the Start and Select button from the previous controller into a single button.

I think Options pretty much sums up what the button offers to gamers and developers.

Boot up the single disc eboot for disc 4 in POPS 5. Quit and reload disk 4 in POPS 3. Tested on both 5. The only pops that can run this game without issues is 3. Play a single-disc eboot and if you like it buy the game, or find out how to switch discs on PSP.

No lag or freezes. Seems to work perfectly, no errors or freezes from sound or item use. All issues are cleared up in POPs 3. The above issue may be due to a disc image format problem, not pops had a similar issue where that was the case with Tomb Raider 1.

PSP Slim with 5. Also freezes quite often. Running at full speed, no crashes in 3. One occurs when you press “start” to fight while reading the book, so to avoid it, you cancel out x, then choose “battle” from the map menu.

Another occurs if you press start from the weapon choice menu, and one more if you skip the animation after beating Cervantes just the first time, but in subsequent times you need at least a bit of the animation to play.

One involves not switching the memory card before choosing a save, the other involves save 1. Before choosing Save 2, you must first press the Circle button to switch from memory card 1 to 2, and then back to 1.

There are 3 save sections per memory card. Save 1 causes the game to crash on load. Hangs during opening sequence on 3. One hour in and works fine with minor audio glitches on 4.

Seems advisable just to use 4. So far no problems that were catastrophic as all problems encountered occurred with a save point nearby and could be solved by switching pops versions.

Nearly completed on 3. Kept Original game ID. RetroArch is one of the best emulators you can have on your iDevice. It houses multiple platforms and is very versatile.

There is a lot to be explained oh how to set up RetroArch and get games running. Below you will find a YouTube video made by me as well as an in depth text tutorial written by over on the. There should only be one item inside the source, RetroArch.

We have the biggest part in setting up our emulation machine done! Installing iFile — In Cydia, search for iFile with the built in search function, it is on the default repository, so no need to add additional sources.

Follow the general steps above in Step 2b to install iFile. Choose what you want to play — RetroArch currently supports many cores read: As little as it counts, I did at one point own all three of these titles, but I have no means of proving that as I have either sold them or cannot find them.

Using the app UnlimDownloads, go to google and search for whichever game you choose, preferably SNES as the filesize is generally small and easiest to manage for a first time user.

Press the Sidebar button on the top left corner, and then press Documents. Uh Oh, no file. This will prompt you to name a directory read: Now to find that file we downloaded.

As you see, there is likely a file titled Chrono Trigger. For SNES, this step can be skipped, but you might want to anyway. It will likely not be a problem, as RetroArch usually has no issue reading SNES data from zip files, but sometimes rom sites will package multiple versions of a rom inside one zip file, so I generally will unzip the file just to be safe.

You will see two files now, one the zip and another with another filetype, and possibly a readme file Spoiler Alert: Before you go and delete the zip file to save space, I recommend checking the file in RetroArch, just to make sure everything is working properly, if not, I have included some very basic troubleshooting in Step 4.

Once downloaded, we will place the file in the proper place. Inside here lie your savegames the. Paste the bin file here, making sure that the spelling and capitalization are correct.

Step 4 — Play the Games! This presents a nice time to learn some basic troubleshooting. Will it work on another core? Is the file corrupted somehow? So lets redownload and try again. The first ROM I downloaded was.

When you first enter this, you may be in a menu with only a few options, but there are many more. This will get you up and running to play everything. The placement of certain items may differ in other overlays, but the function remains.

This is also where we will exit games. To exit this menu press the arrow in the bottom middle of the screen. This will hide the overlay completely, which is good for when you play with an external controller, but not so much for now, as external controllers are currently not working.

Tap the Bottom Middle again to return to the default overlay setting. Left of the Atari is a rotation icon, which is useful for changing the orientation of your device. To do this, load your ROMs onto your SD card in a similar fashion as described above from your computer, then connect the dongle, or if you want a completely iOS experience, download the ROM onto your iDevice and cut it over to the Flash Drive.

Other emulators may support cheat functions, and it may be possible to import their saves into RetroArch, but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial. I will update this when the required services are made available.

We hope this post helped you out and if you have any unanswered questions, feel free to comment below! To view a copy of this license, visit http: Priority ordered case insensative list, where entries were found on atleast 3 different hosts.

Played using psp 5. Music issues if the image is not good — try PAL version. Symphony of the Night, on 4. Crashed after character is chosen at a blank screen if left too long. After chosen character, the screen will go black, immediately press the X button and the game will run normally.

Runs perfect on 3. Works flawlessly on 5. Works fine in 5. New update — works flawlessly under 5. Works until the end of the first disc on 5. Freezes at hovercraft cutscene, dropped down to 3.

Tried loading on disc 2 and same problem occured asking me to switch back to disc 1. Freezes when man in gun shop speaks funnily enough, straight after he says freeze!

Seems to be working great. Crashes in on-foot dungeons. Tested by Joseph Collins. Saving seems to be fixed on 3. Tested by MonkeyJamboree Works fine on 5. Hangs for a minute after PS logo, and when you beat arcade mode, it freezes, but the gameplay is terrific Also no BG music.

Stretch looks like widescreen. I 2nd that motion. One of my FavS. Also the slowdown and stuttering in voices is slightly better. Many GUIs make bad eboots… 3. However if you try to watch the opening cinematic after starting a new game it will freeze at a black screen after it zooms in on the castle.

So press Start as soon as you can to skip it. Works perfectly no slowdown, stutter, or freezes that I have seen so far up through chapter 2 , looks, and sounds the best on 3.

Works perfectly, except a little bit of slowdown with a lot of action going on. Make sure to skip the opening cinematic or else it will freeze. Working fine so far. Works perfectly on 5.

Works, but earlier versions have poorer sound quality. Battles run perfectly, although later spells may change this unable to test this myself. Same as above, but the sound is perfect.

After the Capcom logo you will get a blank white screen. Works again, but no noticable improvements over 3. Upon first trying this pops the game started fine, but I had a black screen when I loaded my save file to the world map.

I restarted and tried a new game instead, which worked fine. Ever since then my save file has worked. The black screen may have been a one-off glitch. Using popsloader plugin, it fully works on 3.

Retrying with a new EBOOT — made from the same image using the same program with the same settings — successfully worked. People on forums also mention both; sometimes it works and sometimes not.

From my observations, it occurs only on the world map, and when the just enter it and try to save. You have to move at least one square for the graphic error to not occur. Like when you just leave a town, or just make dock, or just leave a battle, just move a square or two and you should be able to see your save screen.

You can download it for Windows 7 and later from getcoldturkey. Cold Turkey comes with a pre-populated list of sites, such as Amazon, Buzzfeed and Netflix, to which you can add others. You can then decide how long you want the block to apply for, and set it going.

You can also set different block lists depending on circumstance, so you could have one that only bars social media, and another that also cuts off webmail and news sites.

Not that the ThinkPad Xi Yoga draws attention to itself. When there, it silently charges, but if you happen to exhaust its battery then Lenovo claims a second charge will provide up to lhr 4omins of use.

The ThinkPad Xi Yoga is more than a superb laptop, though. Tilt back the screen and the solid yet flexible hinge allows you to fold it through degrees and use it in stand, tent or tablet modes. In tablet mode, the Xi Yoga is in its element.

Pull the small stylus out of the right-hand edge, and the matte finish across the display gives a lovely feel to everything from writing to sketching or annotating documents. The 2, x 1, panel is so crisp and vivid that I briefly wondered if I was looking at a fake laptop.

Desktop icons are suspended on an inky black and colours look gorgeously vibrant. The panel covers The clincher here, however, is colour accuracy; not only has Lenovo ensured that the Xi Yoga reproduces almost all the colours you could want, it also delivers the correct shades.

An average Delta E of 1. You get your choice of dual-core Core is or Core i7 Skylake processors, stretching up to the 2. Having used the ThinkPad Xi Yoga in practice, though, Pm confident this laptop will coast through most tasks without blinking.

Battery life is respectable, too. However, you can swap the mobile broadband for an Intel WiGig module, which opens the door to high-speed wireless docking stations. If not, start begging the person who is.

As regular readers will know, that means accurate and consistent colour reproduction across a wide range of viewing angles. No purchase of the magazine is necessary. In typical Lenovo fashion, the ThinkCentre Xi is finished in black, and the wireless keyboard and mouse supplied with the machine are equally plain in appearance.

Or so it seems. From front to back, the Xi measures an improbable Another excellent Q pcpro [j] facebook. Those wireless peripherals, while usable, are uninspiring when it comes to the overall design and feel.

That stand, thin though it is, wobbles dramatically if you so much as nudge the screen, and Lenovo misses a trick by not specifying a touchscreen. The quality of the screen continues that theme of practicality with a dose of disappointment.

Even the older non-Retina iMac has a sharper display than this. Although sRGB coverage of A score of 54 in our benchmarks means it looks underpowered when compared with the Asus Zen AiO, which powered to thanks to a full desktop chip.

Is that enough to earn it a recommendation? Just for fun, Scan overclocks this by MHz as well. The end result is phenomenal performance in games, even at 4K. Last Light Redux is.

We have only one word of caution: Naturally, the overclocking carries on to the processor. Only a second separated the Scan and Chillblast in our image-editing tests, but a relative lack of memory and cores held back the Scan in the video-editing and multitasking sections.

Scan also pays its usual careful attention to the supporting cast of components. A Samsung Pro M. The latter has a full-size window at the side that opens on a hinge, making it one of the easiest systems to access.

But this case is as much for show as it is practicality, with a string of white lights at the front and pulsing red LEDs on the motherboard. So if you need to restore it to a new disk, you can.

The bottom line is that Scan has produced an awesomely powerful gaming PC with excellent levels of support. While Scan goes for all-out gaming with its GeForce GTX io8o-powered system opposite, Chillblast has its eyes on the photographer who wants the last word in image-editing speed.

To that end, it overclocks an Intel iooK Broadwell-E processor from 3. It carried that explosive form into our video – editing and multitasking tests too; there are few tasks where this machine will keep you waiting.

Chillblast thoughtfully provides two 3TB hard disks set up in a RAIDi mirrored array, so you can be sure that whatever you store will have an immediate replicate if a drive fails.

Need more storage in the future? There are a further two USB 2 and USB 3 ports sitting atop the case, along with the power button, mic and headphone sockets.

As with the Scan, a stylish Corsair water-cooling unit keeps the processor at a suitable temperature, with three large fans constantly whirring. Chillblast even goes so far as to match the black-and-white theme of the motherboard with its choice of rear fan – nice attention to detail.

Which brings us to the graphics card. The more demanding Metro: Last Light Redux inevitably proved a greater struggle, but by reducing settings as with the Scan it hit 37fps.

Immediate impressions are positive. Although the phone has the same 5. Even the camera sees an upgrade. While it looks bland from a distance, that all changes once you lay your hands on it: The edges of the screen are slightly rounded, the buttons have a solid, positive click, and the do-not-disturb slider on the left edge has a lovely mechanical snick.

However, the OnePlus 3 batters them all in terms of performance. Just check out the graphs see opposite. The OnePlus 3 delivers average frame rates double that of its nearest competitors in the graphics-heavy GFXBench tests, with equally fine Geekbench results.

You have to move up to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6s Plus before you find a handset that can compete. As you might expect, the phone feels ultra-responsive.

The big question is: The negatives principally surround colour balance and colour accuracy. However, quality is affected not solely by the number of pixels but also by the strength of the autofocus, how much light the optics let in, and how well the software exposes the image.

The OnePlus 3 has all the right elements in place. It has a fast phase-detect autofocus system that locks onto subjects in a jiffy, without hunting back and forth. When you hit the shutter button on the OnePlus 3, the resulting image is less likely to come out blurry.

I say understated, because its OxygenOS version 3. The most obvious feature is the Shelf. Found to the left of the main homescreen, this provides quick links to frequently used apps and contacts, and lets you add widgets in a vertically scrolling list below.

You can tweak the slider switch settings, for instance, and change what the capacitive buttons that sit either side of the fingerprint reader do. I prefer my back key to be on the right and the recent apps key on the left, and this is easy to change from the stock setup, which sees the functions reversed.

It marries top-level performance, an excellent camera and great design with a refreshingly simple Android skin to deliver a flagship phone for silly money. The OnePlus 3 represents a killer combination of price, performance and design, and no other phone comes close.

You can organise your contacts, calendar, music, photos apps and more through the built-in file manager. You can also easily find and delete duplicates, and transfer files to and from your PC.

It can handle backups, too, even without iTunes installed on your Windows machine. The Fix and Repair modules offer tools to resolve more serious problems. If your iOS device is frozen, in a reboot loop, stuck on Recovery, or unresponsive to the Home or Power buttons, iPhone Care Pro can often fix the issue with a click.

With Samsung and others joining the budget fray, the Moto G4 must do something special to maintain its position at the top. What does that extra cash get you?

For starters, a larger screen. The Motorola Moto G4 has a 5. The Motorola Moto G4 is a mere 9. Inside is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon running at 1. The Moto G 3rd gen is significantly slower across the board.

The G4 wins for battery life too. Although the Qualcomm Snapdragon is only a 28nm part, it seems to be highly efficient and, coupled with a 3, ooomAh battery, comfortably delivers a day of moderate use.

When we ran it through our standard video-rundown test, the Moto G4 lasted i3hrs 39mins, which is almost three hours longer than the Honor 5X in the same test. Photographs shot on the Moto G4 are packed with detail and well exposed.

Noise is kept under control in all but the darkest scenes, and the HDR mode works well to equalise extremes of shadow and highlight as long as you hold the phone steady. I especially like how easy it is to drag the focus and exposure point around the screen and adjust the exposure compensation to suit.

The only problem I had was that autofocus was somewhat slow to pixels unless you squint hard or reach for a magnifying glass. Best of all, though, Motorola has spent time perfecting how it performs.

Fortunately, nothing has changed on this front. The Moto G4 runs on Android 6, and on the whole, it looks as Google originally intended. There may be some who moan that the Moto G is now too big – and yes, for those with smaller hands and pockets it may be a stretch too far.

However, the pared-down design leaves the IFH with an external laptop-style power supply, and while the stand looks great, it provides only a small amount of front-to-back tilt. Thankfully, image quality is decent, with a high contrast ratio of 1, The one design compromise is the external power supply.

Photos and movies look bright and natural right out of the box, and while the myriad picture modes often do more harm than good, the Standard and sRGB modes hit the spot. With sRGB mode active, the 68i: Switch to Standard mode and contrast leaps to 1, Despite dainty dimensions, Eizo has packed in everything you could ask for.

Image quality is superb. High-quality backlighting and a great IPS panel put it in a different class to most monitors at this price. Finished in a combination of gloss, matte and brushed metal-effect plastics, this 27m monitor looks very ordinary.

What it loses in aesthetics, however, it makes up for in features. The highlight is the sturdy-feeling stand that tilts, pivots, swings around into portrait mode, and gives mm of height adjustment.

Thankfully, the Iiyama is a capable monitor. Our review unit came finished in a creamy off-white, but black is an option too. Whichever you choose, the NEC feels built to last. The stand is easy to adjust one-handed, and provides mm of height adjustment.

Colour accuracy is a little off-beam, however, with a bluish tinge to greyscales. The backlighting on our unit was uneven across the left-hand side, too. The stand provides nothing more than a small amount of front and rear tilt, but does keep the monitor firmly planted to the desk.

The power button at the back doubles as a four-way joystick for navigating the on-screen menus. We found this takes a little getting used to, but once you understand the logic, it works well. But further inspection reveals flaws.

The software has an integrated kill switch, which shuts down your internet connection in the event of a service outage, preventing IP leakage. The firm also has a no logs policy something it shares with all the services on review here.

Fire it up, pick from the list of locations, and off you go. The only real irritation is that you have to disconnect to change server location and settings, and it takes a while to establish a new connection.

What rescues ExpressVPN are its user interface and superb customer-service ratings. What stops it from winning a recommendation is its high price: You also get kill-switch support, the ability to use the service on up to six devices simultaneously, and support across most of the major platforms.

Setting up the stingy three-day trial is a pain, though: Once set up, NordVPN is a doddle to use: I particularly like the Smart Play facility, which automatically relocates your VPN endpoint server depending on the streaming video service you want to use.

With all its features and a reasonable price, NordVPN is our favourite virtual private network service. To use it, you have to open up a Private window, then click the VPN button located to the left-hand side of the address box at the top.

This opens up a dropdown menu where you can switch on the service and choose where you want your connection to end. That price covers up to five devices simultaneously, and it supports all the platforms you could possibly need.

In other areas, though, SurfEasy is found wanting. But in an age where computers and smartphones are becoming a mass-produced, one-size-fits-all commodity, the desktop PC still puts you in charge.

Want a huge disk drive? Need a powerful graphics card? The a la carte philosophy lets you strike a balance, so you can invest in the features that matter to you, while economising on the less important stuff.

And thanks to modular design, the door is open for you to upgrade wcomponents in the future. Not a feature commonly found on laptops or all-in-one PCs. See for yourself on p B 77 How to choose your perfect PC Want a PC that serves your needs today, but also provides the potential to grow as your requirements evolve?

We told them that we wanted a system capable of tearing through whatever productivity tasks we might throw at it today, but which would also provide the flexibility for expansion later on. As ever, competition is tight in the PC business, and a few system builders chose not to take part in our tests, arguing that our price limit would make it impossible for them to put together a distinctive offering.

Ten retailers have risen to the challenge, and assembled a range of powerful and versatile systems. Many of them are specified along similar lines, but no two are identical: For our detailed reviews, see the following pages.

A fast solid-state drive can have a big impact on your desktop experience: Windows boots up in seconds and applications spring to life as soon as you click on their icon. Most drives still use the familiar SATA connector, but some newer motherboards also accept the compact M.

In an ideal world your SSD would be both lightning-fast and large enough to hold all your personal files, as well as your OS and applications. For now, the cost of flash storage makes that unrealistic, at least on our budget.

There was a time when RAM was scarce, and it was considered best to get as much as you possibly could. Today, even mid-price laptops come with 8GB, which is plenty for all but the most exceptional workloads.

A final core component to consider is the GPU. Those who want more immersive, cinematic visuals will need to invest in an external graphics card. With that and a graphics card in place, your expansion options could be limited in the future.

Not all of our suppliers have chosen the same Core is model though, while some have stepped up to a Core i7, which adds Hyper – Threading and a larger internal cache. Rather than paying a premium for a faster model, it might make sense to spend more on other areas of the PC.

Perhaps you have an old sound card or serial controller that connects to a conventional PCI slot. When it comes to external connections, older ports such as eSATA have largely fallen by the wayside: This might not seem useful now, but as smartphones and external storage devices move to the new standard, you might be grateful for it in future.

An SD card reader at the front is a welcome convenience too. Larger cases offer more space for specialist cooling systems, which in turn can support extreme overclocking – just take a look at the Chillblast Photo OC VII onp A final consideration is noise.

A dedicated graphics card adds at least one more fan. In use, the noise produced varies considerably from one PC to another, and only you can decide how much that matters.

Hard-core gamers might consider it perfectly acceptable to have a PC that sounds like a leaf-blower, if it lets them squeeze an extra few frames per second out of Dark Souls III. We prefer a quieter life, on balance; where a PC was conspicuously noisy during our testing, we mention it in our review.

The first is performance: These tests provide a numeric score for each system, representing its performance relative to a Core iK reference PC. Our second category covers features and design.

This score partly reflects the overall versatility of each PC: We also consider the overall ergonomics of the system, and weigh in factors such as size, appearance and noise.

The third rating reflects value for money. One other important factor is also taken into account: A decent warranty that lasts for several years and includes carriage and return is a significant benefit, and this will be reflected in our value score.

The final, overall score we produce is a weighted average of our three ratings. For bulk data storage you also get a 2TB Seagate Barracuda hard disk – twice the capacity of several other systems.

If you were hoping to upgrade to an M. The Chillblast Fusion Insight might not be for everyone. If you really need top-tier desktop performance, or if space is tight, then one of the other fine systems on test this month might suit you better.

Yet closer inspection reveals plenty to like. The Asus BM-A motherboard offers a decent range of external connectivity options, with two USB 3 ports at the front and another pair at the rear.

Right now, that might seem pointless; once the new standard becomes widespread it could prove very useful, since Type-C can deliver up to six times the juice of a standard USB 2 socket.

Chillblast has also installed an For those who still use optical media, a 24X DVD writer is fitted too. Playing Dirt Showdown at io8op resolution and maximum detail, it kept up a very creditable average of 83fps.

Only when we switched to 4K did the card begin to struggle: When it comes to desktop performance, the Chillblast Fusion Insight is a strong performer, but not exceptional. Only those with very unusual workloads will find it limiting.

The one convenience is a multicard reader, hidden behind the shiny front plate. That system certainly has its advantages, including a lightning-fast M. This quickly evaporated, however, once we saw what it looked like.

No two ways about it: Happily, the internals are much more agreeable. Mesh has opted for a Core processor, running at 3. This lifts application performance: External connections are slightly less generous: The difference in performance was exposed by our benchmark tests.

Overclockers has chosen to include only 8GB of memory, rather than the 16GB provided by all the other retailers. Objectively speaking, this is still a perfectly generous provision – indeed, it could be a smart economy to start off with 8GB, and add more memory in the future as and when you need it.

Its capacity of GB should be ample for your applications, but the 1TB Seagate hard disk seems mean: Clearly, then, Overclockers has taken a frugal approach to the core components, and the reason becomes apparent when you fire up Steam.

At io8op and the highest detail settings, Dirt Showdown kept up an average of 98 frames per second, and even maintained a smooth 45fps when we switched to 4K. Despite its big gaming capabilities, the Kinetic Hi is a relatively compact system: Connection options are somewhat limited, however.

Externally, the system offers five USB 2 ports in total, but only three USB 3 ports – two at the back and one at the front. And there are no extras: Ultimately, though, the Kinetic Hi only makes sense if gaming performance is your top priority.

Otherwise, there are plenty of better-balanced bundles to be had. We cover the whole spectrum of technology news, reviews and features. What do they recommend? Whenever we introduce a new range into stores, all computing colleagues, irrespective of their level, complete training on the key products in that new range.

Without these products, a customer may be disappointed with their purchase, since it might not do something they were expecting it to. But there are advantages to shopping on the high street.

When it comes to items such as monitors, you can see the image quality for yourself; with a laptop, you can test the weight and try out the touchpad. And the impatient among us can take our new computers home there and then, rather than wait for delivery.

At no point did we feel that we were being over-sold. We remain less convinced about the value of in-store advice, however. First to PC World. Before we set out, we had already spoken to Phil Samuels, director for computing at Dixons Carphone which owns the PC World chain, who pointed to the value of in-store shopping advice.

At first we were dubious: Samuels assured us that PC World long ago addressed such concerns. If you have perceptions of the shop based on visits from years ago, it might be time to put those to the test yourself.

Despite promises of callbacks, however, all our efforts came to naught. This is a shame, since John Lewis offers a two-year guarantee with all the PCs it sells, so on the surface would seem like a sensible place to go.

Our blind-buy results were, to put it kindly, mixed. There were more on display at John Lewis Oxford Street, but few were plugged in. Components are particularly complicated.

On a number of ABOVE We found all sales assistants to be honest and helpful, but lacking in knowledge occasions, the salespeople we spoke to got tangled, with graphics cards being a favourite stumbling block.

This, incidentally, was from the person who otherwise offered the best recommendations. Stick to the specialists. On sale on the high street T raining sales assistants costs money – as does maintaining large high-streetshops.

You might imagine that these overheads would make PC World much more expensive than a specialist retailer, but its size allows it to buy in bulk, and negotiate discounts that smaller operators may be unable to match.

So does the high street offer good value? It also comes with an When it comes to performance, though, the Nightblade disappoints. Its Core i processor runs at a nominal 2. There may be advantages to buying on the high street, but when your decision comes down to the bottom line, the online specialists are still the way to go.

The beauty of M. This is still a great choice for io8op gaming: This is a little disappointing: The graphics card is noisy too: If you can live with the noise, the is Tremor is a very impressive package indeed.

And while its Hive system is designed for general-purpose computing, the enthusiast pedigree is immediately betrayed by the distinctive BitFenix Phenom enclosure. Although the case has an unusually large x mm footprint, we found its low-profile design very appealing.

This improves ventilation for heavyweight graphics cards. This provides a pair of PCI Express xi6 slots, ready for a dual – GPU setup or other high-performance upgrades, along with a generous four USB 3 slots at the rear as well as two regular USB 2 ports and a set of analogue and digital outputs supporting 7.

Mindful that not everyone is a devout gamer, Vibox has taken a conservative path when it comes to graphics, equipping the Hive with a lightweight Nvidia GeForce GT card. The motherboard does feature an M.

The presence of a SATA Express port may seem like a promising alternative, but nobody is making drives that support this standard right now. You may or may not find that useful: In all we found the Vibox Hive, with its stylish case, super-fast processor and capacious SSD, very likeable indeed.

The Workstation Ultima is built around a Core ioK processor, overclocked to 4. With an overall benchmark score of, this is easily the fastest PC here. After accounting for such a heavyweight CPU, you might expect the budget to be exhausted, but the Workstation Ultima has another high-performance surprise up its sleeve in the shape of an M.

This might not transform your productivity, but when applications snap open in seconds it adds to the impression of a powerful and responsive system. USB Type-C makes a welcome appearance though.

Everything comes wrapped up in a distinctive white BitFenix Nova case, with a plastic window at the side through which you can gaze upon all those empty slots.

The system warranty includes carriage and return for only the first 30 days, but that should see you smoothly through any initial problems; after that you get a parts-and-labour return-to-base service up to two years, followed by another year of labour-only cover.

Overall, the Workstation Ultima offers astonishing performance for the price, and we were sorely tempted to give it an award. What held us back is the reality that few of us really need this sort of power.

But if your top priority is a PC that devours desktop tasks at lightning-speed then this is, no question, your machine. But it would be a mistake to write off the Nova Pro just for that.

It bears repeating that an overall benchmark score of still represents a beefy desktop PC. Not splurging on raw power has allowed CCL to put together a well-rounded system.

For some, those performance scores will be hard to get past. While the Nova Pro will turn off speed freaks and gamers, it remains a great bundle. When we fired up Dirt Showdown at io8op, it kept up a perfectly decent average of 49fps.

The Asus Hno-Plus motherboard is unusually accommodating for those with older hardware, offering three conventional PCI slots on the inside and – to our surprise – a parallel port at the rear. We suppose this could be handy if you need to hook up an ancient Zip drive or dot-matrix printer.

For more modern peripherals you get two USB 2 connectors and four USB 3 ports, distributed across the front and back of the case. The 16GB of RAM provided should see you right for years to come, but it would have been nice to have the option to drop in some extra modules.

We also felt short-changed by the storage on offer: If legacy connectivity is a priority, the Evolve D-Pro is a viable all-round system with strong application performance.

No surprise, then, that its benchmark performance proved almost identical. An overall score of in our application tests is highly respectable, if unexceptional in this group, and an average frame rate of 82fps in our high-resolution Dirt Showdown test indicates plenty of power for gamers.

Unusually, the board also offers not only a parallel port at the rear but also a nine-pin serial connector, for those of us with vintage peripherals still in service. But nothing else comes bundled – no optical drive, no card reader and no wireless.

A bog-standard 1TB data drive completes the package. It all comes across as a bit of a barebones offering, compared to the Chillblast with its wireless card and 2TB data drive, or the Mesh with its Core 17 processor.

PC Specialist has received plenty of praise in our Tech Excellence Awards over the years, but this month its rivals have simply managed to squeeze a little more into the budget. Its oversized design will put off some, but it lives up to its name: At P and high detail, Dirt Showdown ran at an average of 34fps.

A further two of each at the front make this a well-connected system indeed, and an integrated card reader further sweetens the deal. While not as fast as an M. That makes the merely adequate 1TB mechanical drive easier to swallow.

In that context, a modular, expandable system was the perfect choice. You could take home an affordable basic PC today, and save up for future upgrades. Best of all, the downward drift of technology prices meant that, rather than paying a premium for an extra memory module or a larger hard disk, you could wait a year and get the upgrade for half the price.

As the cost of computing power has continued to fall, that sort of flexibility has come to seem less urgent. In my own case, I switched a few years ago to a mid-range all-in-one, reasoning that it would do everything I needed for the foreseeable future.

Slick design, and the prospect of regaining some valuable desk space, were all it took to lure me Darien Graham-Smith is associate editor of PC Pro. Unfortunately, my all-in-one PC supports mSATA only, and the slimline design affords no possibility of an expansion card.

When I first laid eyes on my 2, x 1, panel, it seemed like the height of visual luxury. It certainly knocks the socks off a standard io8op display when it comes to editing digital photos, or working with multitrack audio.

My upgrade options e, of course, nil: You can make big savings in time and money by digitising statements, invoices and legal paperwork. Not only does this reduce wasted office space, it also makes documents much easier for staff to locate.

Your original hard copies, meanwhile, can be sent off to secure archival storage. When it comes to scanning, there are plenty of efficient and affordable solutions.

Some scanners are designed for fairly light use, while others can handle thousands of pages per day. Speed is an important factor to consider, too. Some manufacturers quote performance in pages per minute ppm, while others cite images per minute ipm.

Resolutions of dpi upwards come into their own only when scanning artwork. Installing drivers and software only on the systems you want to connect to the scanner also provides a degree of access control.

Wireless network support is often a bonus, providing more freedom to put the scanner where convenient. If you have a mixed environment, you may need to do some configuring to help wired clients talk to a wireless scanner.

While you can always scan to a local folder, all good scanners can also send scans directly to shared locations such as network drives. You should keep your originals in a safe facility anyway, but losing access to digital copies would be a headache.

The cloud is an ideal solution for centrally sharing documents, and it has the added bonus of providing off-site storage so they can be accessed from anywhere. Check to see if your chosen services are on the list.

There are drawbacks, however. Searchable PDFs take up additional storage space. Another option that consumes space is colour: We found that a dpi duplex colour statement took around five minutes to process on an old office PC, running on a 2.

Read on to find out how to slim down your filing cabinets. B Advanced technology for small and mid-sized businesses KerioControl Network security protection with award-winning next-gen firewall and more.

Full-featured VoIP business phone system with advanced call handling and more. It offers a fast soppm scan speed and a generous page ADF – and it will take some stick, with a 5,sheet daily duty cycle.

Hooking it up is easy: We found it effortless to get connected to our wireless network via WPS. Stepping through the installation routine on our Windows 10 desktop was largely automatic.

The software discovered the scanner and loaded a spread of support software for us: We fed a mix of till receipts, statements and bills through the ADF with few problems. On the rare occasion a jam did occur, the scanner stopped before causing any damage.

We were also able to scan embossed credit cards, providing they were inserted short side down. The same speed is attainable for dpi mono scans, but here we found the speed fell to 32ppm when we switched to colour.

It adds up to a comprehensive set of business scanning features. Speed and output quality are impressive, as is cloud support – and the price is very tempting indeed, making this our SMB desktop scanner of choice.

A USB host port also lets you scan directly to a local storage device, and from the web console you can configure scans to email servers, FTP sites and network shares, which all then appear as destinations in the LCD panel.

The embedded Scan to Mobile option is another smart feature. We found this spotted the scanner on the network right away, and let us remotely initiate scans and pull down documents to our iPad.

Setting up the software on a Windows 10 desktop took 15 minutes. CaptureOnTouch is great for setting up quick-scan operations, allowing us to use its well-designed interface to create multiple shortcuts, linking different scan modes with a choice of destinations.

To do this, we created document profiles. First we chose from colour or mono, then selected a resolution, simplex or duplex modes, and enabled tools such as blank-page skipping, anti-skew and image rotation.

We then linked these to output profiles to determine where our scans were sent. Local or network folders are supported, as well as printers, SharePoint and a local email client.

We had no problems sending scans straight to our Evernote account; for Google Drive, we just pointed the software at our local sync folder. Working with CapturePerfect, the Kofax VRS software proved very capable at cleaning up images, although we had to download software from the Kofax support site before it would recognise the scanner.

It also allows you to create just one cloud connection where its virtual directory is mapped to a local drive letter. In greyscale, our duplex scans of 50 bank statements produced a searchable PDF at a rate of 47ppm at dpi and 38ppm at dpi.

Selecting a bit colour profile saw speed drop to 3oppm at dpi, while a dpi profile pulled us down to i6. If you want to try the maximum dpi colour resolution, prepare for super-slow performance: The good news is that greyscale dpi quality is perfectly adequate for document archiving, with the embedded OCR feature producing excellent, accurate results from fonts as small as 6pt.

Paper handling was decent, too. The scanner handled our thin courier waybills well and the anti-skew feature proved effective. Single embossed ID and credit cards can be scanned, but you must use a profile with the ultrasonic jam-detection turned off.

Just remember to factor in the additional cost of network support if you need it, plus document management software. Our mono and colour duplex scans of 50 bank statements averaged a perfect 4oppm at both resolutions.

Like all scanners, the iii90 slowed down considerably at dpi, with mono and colour scans both dropping to loppm – but this remains better than many rivals.

Scan quality and accuracy at 2oopdi is perfectly acceptable for document archiving purposes, however. On the top of the iii90 sits a highly legible backlit colour LCD panel. Scan jobs are easy to select using the up and down soft-touch buttons; tap the right-hand arrow to start scanning.

The iii90 also has a generous page ADF, and its output tray can be stowed away when not in use. For Windows 10 hosts, we recommend using the latest full CD image instead of the older version in the box to avoid USB connection issues.

It streamlines scanning operations by assigning up to nine profiles, each with their own settings, such as simplex or duplex, colour or mono, resolution, anti-skew, hole-fill and blank-page skipping.

There are plenty of destination options to choose from, including scanning to local folders, creating searchable PDFs and sending output to local, network or fax printers. Paper handling is impeccable, providing our tissue-thin courier waybills were inserted long side down.

During all our statement – scanning tests, it jammed only once, but the ultrasonic detection was so quick that nothing was damaged. Smart Touch can also detect barcodes and create a separate file each time it encounters one.

PageManager and BizCard Xpress software. But underneath its glossy, white plastic exterior lurks an astonishingly fast 8oppm scan engine. Thanks to its duplex capability, that equates to a file – cabinet-busting i6oipm.

Still, the PSU is a cinch to install on a dedicated host PC; we connected its USB 2 port to our Windows 10 workstation and had all the software apps loaded in less than ten minutes. PageManager 9 SE document-management utility.

It dealt with our statements, flimsy courier waybills and till receipts without complaint. The PageManager software offers useful document-management features, allowing us to neatly organise our scan folders, inspect selected documents and send them to other applications using drag and drop.

If you need a high-volume, heavy-duty desktop scanner at an affordable price then the SmartOffice PSU is the one to choose. Selecting one opens all its configuration options in the main pane, so you can easily select colour, mono or greyscale, opt for simplex or duplex scans, and choose an output file format for each one.

From the same screen, you can pick a resolution, adjust brightness or contrast, and activate features such as punch-hole and blank-page removal, auto-crop, deskew and individual rotation settings for each side of a page.

We confirmed the effects of our selections as we went along by popping a page in the scanner, selecting the preview button and checking the resulting image. DocAction lacks support for direct cloud connections, so we could only send scans to our local Dropbox, Evernote and Google Drive sync folders.

Note that this was all in mono – colour scans are slower, but still impressive. In our tests, the PSU averaged a better – than-claimed 46ppm in colour at dpi and 3oppm at dpi. Even at dpi, the PSU is no slouch, with mono and colour scans averaging 24ppm and sppm respectively.

To test it, we called on a Boston Fenway T rack server equipped with dual 2. Arcserve Backup ri7 comes with native LTO-7 support. For full performance you must change Tape Engine block size from the default 64KB to KB, an easy Registry hack that will nearly double throughput.

Our third test proved tougher. We used a It – M Paring Jp iB. Data security during transit and rest is well provided. Drives from LTO-4 onwards can perform bit AES hardware encryption with any backup software that supports key management, such as Arcserve Backup ri7.

Another good feature is support for write once read many WORM media. This allows sensitive data to be archived in a non-modifiable state, to ensure compliance with data-protection rules. And when it comes to long-term reliability, you should have no concerns.

Tape backup may seem like old technology but LTO has a bright future; the product roadmap now extends to LTO, which will offer 48TB native capacity. An increasing number of businesses are seeing the value of tape as alow-cost, reliable medium for long-term data archiving.

The Sipgate Team service could be the solution. It offers good value and plenty of features, with no minimum contract period and no need for an on-site server. Your main interface with the service is the web portal.

This is nicely designed, displaying details of all inbound and outbound calls, account billing status and options to order more phone services and numbers. We settled for the numbers already assigned to our account, but you can request local, , or international numbers – and port over existing landlines as well.

To get set up, we assigned our admin account a number from the list along with an internal extension. This had to be configured manually via its own web interface, but the process was easy.

Once a phone had been assigned to a user, it was displayed in their personal settings, along with icons showing its status. Additional users were just as easy to configure. As well as physical handsets, Sipgate Team supports all manner of softphones.

The Zoiper iOS app is just as easy to configure. We then entered our account details and were up and running in less than two minutes. There are plenty of more advanced PBX features on offer.

Group voicemail allows callers to leave a message, while call-forwarding rules can redirect them to other users, or a mobile. Multiple rules can be used to implement call hunting, with schedules to determine the active times and days.

Voicemail and call forwarding can also be applied on a per-user basis. You decide who can call international and premium-rate numbers, or others that may incur a charge.

If you want to take advantage of the full range of VoIP services then a fair amount of configuration is inevitable, but we found the online help seemed to have an answer for everything.

The answer, it seems, is simple: They have to be. So much of it is about helping companies make decisions and bringing products to market quicker. On a more personal level, it can lead to a more productive workforce by freeing them to work from wherever is most convenient and, as McGroarty explains, can even help with staff retention.

Then your first step is to assess what you need, what difference you want it to make, and how it will work with your existing communications infrastructure. Formal conversation over videoconferencing is far more difficult.

In my experience, Cisco likes to suggest you equip all your conference spaces with the same furniture, the same videoconferencing machinery – and the same colour walls and ceilings.

As mentioned in the above article, it could be a simple add-on to an existing contract, it could be offering users additional collaboration features – before you invest, though, keep formality in mind.

Effective videoconferencing is about the type of call people make, not the technology they use. McGroarty was equally cautious. At the most basic level, a small organisation would begin with a web-based solution, which can integrate with consumer-grade apps such as Skype.

In most cases, the service would run over an existing internet connection. It exists to protect the privacy and security of all the data collected by organisations, large and small, across the European Union.

It replaces the old Data Protection Directive, which was brought into play back in, and updates it to keep pace with the changing data-protection landscape of the modern online world.

We do it when we book a flight online, access our bank accounts, or keep in touch with our social circles. We accept this as part of living in the modern world. The GDPR simplifies the regulatory environment for most businesses, while at the same time bringing information security front and centre, which is never going to be a bad thing.

It codifies such things as a right to be forgotten, as well as a data breach notification requirement. These have reputational as well as financial implications – no matter who imposes the fine. That means notifying both the Information Commissioner and the individuals whose data has gone walkabout.

Make sure your antivirus and other internet security provisions are up to scratch. Consider switching to multifactor authentication for systems handling client data. Think of mobile access, too: This gives an individual the right to order a business to erase their personal data, as long as certain criteria are met.

You should aim to getthis in place early, so you have plenty of time to disseminate new policies and test new processes around your business. B 1 The Network G DPR controllers will have to erase any and all copies or links to personal data where the data subject withdraws consent and there is no legal ground for processing it.

The organisation must also take reasonable steps to inform others who are processing the data concerned. Pearce recommends that all businesses review their procedures for handling erasure requests, to ensure they can provide both for erasure and restriction.

The GDPR instead requires businesses to keep detailed records on their own processing activity. This will clarify and dictate the detail of what specific industry sectors must do to prepare for GDPR.

Usually, drafting a data map will help businesses to understand the pattern of data through the company, provide clarity on who has eyes on the data, indicate what skills these people have and, finally, highlight where the data ends up.

This should, in a single stroke, ensure that management recognises the dangers associated with the loss, misuse, theft or any other compromise of customer data. For organisations that pass data onto others, there is a tendency to presume that third parties operate to high standards of data security and protection.

We contacted the company – which was deeply apologetic – and it said it had now contacted both Samuel and Doug and that the problem was now fixed. It seems the lack of replies was caused by a technical problem with Microsoft’s servers that meant Bullguard’s replies to Samuel and Doug’s queries were flagged as spam and directed to junk folders.

Other email addresses flagged as spam by this glitch included all email provider servers from Microsoft Outlook, Hotmail, MSN, Live, etc. The problem wasn’t helped by these email providers migrating to Microsoft’s new Outlook – Live mail configuration.

If you’ve found yourself in the same position as Samuel and Doug, we suggest first checking your junk folder and if you still don’t find Bullguard’s email, contact the company.

There are many good video editing apps. Do you need advice on what you should buy? Email us at lettersipcomputeractive. So why do we need yet another alternative? Well, the idea behind Video Easy is to take a task that others promise to simplify and make it even simpler than that.

Regardless of the price or target market, you always seem to be faced with the same confusing multi-panelled user interface, where you import clips into libraries or bins before arranging them on a timeline or storyboard.

More likely, you just have a few video files to tidy up and put together. So removing the library makes good sense and avoids an unnecessary step. The result feels modern, easy on the eye and less daunting than other video programs, which tend to pepper the screen with tiny meaningless icons.

It also imports from digital still cameras or their SD cards and even old-fashioned analogue camcorders, via composite or S-Video cables. You can then move your clips around the storyboard with your mouse, and trim them using the sliders under the main window, there are options to add titles, transitions, special effects including zooms, tracking shots and sepia tints, closing credits, a soundtrack and a commentary.

Video Easy lets you save your finished film to your hard drive as an MP4 file. The slider-based slow – motion effect is great, too. You can pair it with two Bluetooth devices at once, which means you can switch quickly between them, and a built-in mic allows you to make hands-free phone calls from your mobile.

The GDPR now requires controllers to obtain sufficient guarantees of this before engaging with processors. If any of those do apply, then even the smallest business must comply with the full record-keeping requirement.

We look forward to guidance from the ICO on how those criteria will be interpreted. If you do, your business may face a substantial fine. Indeed, some have questioned the scale of the penalties associated with non-compliance: However, there are ways to reduce your exposure.

It may be worth small businesses perusing these to give them some protection from fines – as well as implementing best practice when it comes to information security. Make sure your old PCs are disposed of properly.

The obvious one is the legal restrictions on disposal of electronic items: Unless you happen to have a car crusher on the premises, or some other means of physically destroying your old drives, you should think about disposing of your old computers in a more managed way.

Can we sell them off? Maybe stick them on eBay? You can – but be sure you understand the software licences that came with the machine, the OS reinstallation options, and your rights to resell them.

Be upfront with buyers: It might be easier simply to sell the machines without the hard disk. Perhaps your company documents really are of no interest to anyone else.

Been logging into trade websites to buy supplies? Can you be certain that no-one might have used that machine to visit any adult or troublesome sites at any time? It is, because there are a lot of knowledgeable people out there who make it their business to scrape together exploitable information.

Even if your disk yields only a small amount of seemingly trivial data, it could be significant to them once combined with a larger database. Probably the most widely accepted package is Blancco blancco.

That should prevent anyone from reconstituting the data – right? It would be nice if data security regulators and auditors were thinking at this sort of level. In practice, abroad-brush rule applies.
