No on Elementary School Dist. How does a newspaper respond to threats? Yet, there I was, a little more than two weeks ago. What is the correct response, really, to this? How did I come to be hearing these threats?

They were bad for the party, bad for Arizona, dangerous for America. But in its more than years, The Republic had never endorsed a Democrat for president.

So, over the many months of the campaign, we found ourselves with this question: Endorse no one, or endorse a Democrat for the first time in our history? We made our choice soberly.

We knew it would be unpopular with many people. We knew that, although we had clearly stated our objections to Trump, it would be a big deal for a conservative editorial board in a conservative state to break ranks from the party.

We chose patriotism over party. We endorsed the Democrat. And then the reaction started pouring in. Threats against our business. Threats against our people. So, what is the response?

What is the correct response to any of the vile threats against me? What is the correct response to the more disturbing actions and words directed against so many others?

Today, I offer you a few. She is the young woman who answered the phone when you called. She sat in my office and calmly told three Phoenix police detectives what you had said.

She told them that later, she walked to church and prayed for you. Prayed for patience, for forgiveness. Kimberly knows free speech requires compassion. To those who said we should be shut down, burned down, who said they hoped we would cease to exist under a new presidential administration, I give you Nicole.

She is our editor who directs the news staff, independent of our endorsements. Further, the German Patent No. An ever increasing concern with consumers is the potential threat of bodily harm or to life that conventional lawnmowers present.

The metallic cutting blades customarily used in lawnmowers can permanently disfigure, injure or kill an operator or innocent bystanders. If the operator inadvertently runs over any portion of his body or that of a bystander, such as a foot, that portion of the body could be severely maimed or lost.

An alarming number of these types of accidents have been reported around the country. Further, when the operator is removing the grass catcher it is possible that his arms or hands may inadvertently slip under the housing and be injured or severed by the lawnmower blade.

Additionally, if the lawnmower blade runs over rocks, metal rods, stakes and the like it will project those objects outwardly with great velocity. These objects could likely strike the operator or an innocent bystander and cause serious bodily injury or death.

As a result of the dangerous nature of conventional lawnmowers, it has been proposed to replace the customary metallic cutting blades with flexible type of filaments commonly found in edgers or trimmers.

However, the known cutting blades using flexible filaments have been unable to provide an adequate alternative to the metallic cutting blade. It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved rotary cutting member having a plurality of flexible filaments forming the cutting blade.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting member that will significantly reduce the danger of bodily harm associated with the use of lawnmowers and the like.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting member that creates a lower pressure area along its upper surface for raising up grass and vegetation or the like and directing cut grass or vegetation upwardly into the lawnmower bag, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the mower.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide means for readily replacing the flexible cutting filaments once they have worn out. Another object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting member which has a weight embedded therein for opposing and moderating fluctuations in the revolutions per minute rpm of the output shaft of the lawnmower engine.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting blade that maintains a constant rpm level, thereby ensuring an even cut of the entire lawn. A further object of the present invention is to provide a flexible cutting filament having spaced cutting elements.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting member with a weight embedded therein for the ease of starting the lawnmower engine. Yet a further object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting member having a hub and a plurality of arms extending therefrom and a cut-out formed intermediate the adjacent arms for permitting upward air flow therebetween.

In summary, the present invention includes a rotary cutting blade having a plurality of flexible filaments extending therefrom. The flexible filaments form a cutting blade for effectively cutting the grass but present no damage of bodily injury to the operator of any bystanders.

The above and other objects and advantages and novel features of the present inventions will become apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:.

It is well within the purview of the invention to vary the number of arms C extending from rotary cutting member A. As shown by the phantom lines in FIG. The rotary cutting blade A includes upper and lower surfaces 2 and 4, respectively.

The upper surface 2, best seen in FIG. The lower surface 4, best seen in FIG. The lower surface 4 is substantially planar and includes a recess 6 formed about the center of rotary blade A.

The recess 6 cooperates with bore 7, best seen in FIG. The rotary cutting blade A may be formed from Xenoy or a suitable conventional material. Xenoy is a plastic unreinforced polycarbonate based polymer blend.

The arms C are spaced equidistantly from the outer periphery of the hub B, and are offset relative to each other to allow unobstructed flow of air towards the center.

Further, each arm C extends outwardly from hub B to the same distance. The arms C include first and second ends 8 and 10, and leading and trailing surfaces 12 and 14, respectively.

First end 8 is removed from hub B while second end 10 is positioned adjacent thereto. The ends B are raised slightly upwardly above the lower surface 4 of hub B, for allowing the hub B to hit the ground first before the arms C, if the lawnmower goes into a hole or the like.

As best shown in FIG. The top surface 16 further includes an upwardly extending shoulder 20 having an inclined surface The inclined surface 22 extends from first end 8 to second end 10 of arms C, and includes a bevelled surface 24 which joins the hub B.

A line holder 26 extends outwardly from the trailing surfaces 14 of arms C. The line holder 26 includes a pair of upper and lower passageways 28 and 29, for receiving flexible cutting filaments D, as best seen in FIG.

The line holder includes top and bottom surface 30 and 32, respectively. The top and bottom surfaces 30 and 32 of line holders 26 are flush with the top and bottom surfaces 16 and 18, respectively, of arms C.

In addition, the passageways 28 and 29 are vertically spaced and laterally offset with respect to one another. As shown in FIGS. First cutting element 34 is received in upper passageway 28 away from the trailing surface 14, and the second cutting element 36 is received in lower passageway 29 directly adjacent the trailing surface 14 of arms C.

During operation, first cutting element 34 acts as an air-foil for creating a low pressure area above upper surface 2 of rotary cutting member A. This results in a partial vacuum causing the grass or the vegetation to be raised upwardly, thereby enabling the cutting blade A to readily cut the same.

The lawn edger of the present invention ofiers as advantages over lawn edgers of the prior art, lighter frame construction, more convenient adjustability of the edging device, ready adapt-” ability of the device to substantially any type of power mower, and more inexpensive construction, particularly as regards the edging tool per so which actually operates on the lawn,.

The fcregoing’objects and; advantages and still other objects and advantages will becom more evident during the following description taken in 65′ Referring to the drawings somewhat more in detail there is illustrated in Figure 1 a power mower of substantially any conventional design and generally comprising a frame that includes a top plate ill supported on the ground wheels I2 and which in turn supports a drive motor M.

The lawn mower comprises the usual cutter arrangement, such as the rotary reel and cutter bar not illustrated and means are provided for driving either the wheels I2 or the cutting arrangement or both thereof in the form of the shaft 26 that is belted as by belt Hi to pulley of the motor and which shaft is in turn belted by the drive belt 22 to the pulley 24, mounted on the wheel or the reel of the mower.

According to the present invention there is mounted on the top panel ill, a substantially U – shaped bracket at which may be secured to top panel Ill as by the mounting flange 32 and bolts Between the up-standing side plates of U – shaped bracket there is pivoted by means of the pivot shaft 36, a portion 38 of a support arm projecting forwardly toward, the front of the mower.

At its front end, portion 38 is bored at 0 for receiving the cylindrical rear end 42 of a second portion 44 of the support arm. Lock screws 45 may be provided for clamping cylindrical portion 42 in any desired position of adjustment within bore so that the two portions ‘ofthe support arm can be extended or telescoped 3 together to any desired degree or so the forward portion M of the support arm can be rotated to any desired position of angularity relative to the portion 38, of the support arm.

Portion 38 of the support arm at its rear end comprises a pair of up-standing cars 48, between which is pivoted a rod 59 that is drilled and tapped for receiving screw 52 that passes through a similar rod 54, carried between the side plates of bracket 30 but which is drilled with a clearance ball for passing screw On screw 52 on the opposite side of rod 54 from rod 50 there is a knob 56 by means of which the screw can be rotated.

In this manner the entire support arm can be rocked up and down about its pivotal support 38 and thus position the forward or working end of the edging device at any desired elevation.

At its forwardmost end, portion 44 of the support arm has a laterally extending part 58, best seen in Figures 2 and 6 and which part 58 provides spaced journals Gil for supporting the rotary drive shaft 62 of the edging device.

Rightwardly of part 58, that is toward the center of the mower, there is mounted on the end of shaft 62 a drive pulley 64 pinned thereto as by the pin Leftwardly of the end of part 50, shaft 62 may advantageously be grooved to receive snap ring Outwardly beyond snap ring 65, shaft 62 is shouldered as indicated at 68 and abutting the shoulder is the edging tool proper generally indicated at H1 and which is retained in position by nut 12 threaded on to the threaded outer end of shaft The edging tool 10,.

These grooves are adapted for registering when the plates are brought together and the clamp bolts H3 are passed through the bores 8t so that the said grooves are adapted for supporting the correspondingly shaped pieces of twisted wire or cable indicated at 82 and forming the cutting elements of the edging tool.

This particular feature of my invention wherein the plates It form a holder for the cutting elements proper and which elements are in the form of twisted wires or cables is an important feature because.
