C Not sure there will be much of a speed difference. The utility software is now smart enough to figure out what you’re trying to do, and that will force it to auto-setup as a wired ethernet extender, not wireless. Additionally, as there is virtually no management overhead over Ethernet, more data will move from one point to another in the same space of time. Warehouse Deals Open-Box Discounts. Additionally, try to choose a router that offers removable antennas. All you have to do is 1.

Connect your express LAN port directly to your mac ethernet and fire up airport utility. Select Create New Network rather than extend when configuring. Let Airport setup finish, then unplug your express from the mac.

You should now see both. If this is the case, in airport utility select Edit, go to Network and reselect Bridge. Click on update and thats that. After doing that, you have one heck of a cool home network.

You can walk your iPhone from one location to the other and it will pick the strongest station around but the entire time thinks it is on the same ‘network’. You can extend both wireless and wired.

One more tip, you may use a LAN hub between the extreme and the express if you wish to use more LAN ethernet ports, it will not effect the process. Did it myself and the whole setup is amazing.

The utility software is now smart enough to figure out what you’re trying to do, and that will force it to auto-setup as a wired ethernet extender, not wireless. For wireless extension, it’s as easy as plugging in the power plug on the extender basestation wherever you want it to stay within range of the main basestation, then firing up the Utility, finding the new basestation, and following the on-screen steps to set up as an extension.

It was amazing easy. All you have to do is 1. Plug it in in the room you want it in and let it recycle 2. Go to your computer and wait a few minutes and follow the instructions.

No need for a hard reset 4. Just select then network and the extend option This was so easy and quick and what an improvement in the signal strength. I read this string before buying an Airport Express today, confident that I could extend my current Time Capsule-based wireless network by attaching the new Express as a node on my wired network in a remote part of the house with bad wifi signal.

Unfortunately, it does not work. The first time I plugged an Ethernet cable into the back of the Express and waited for Airport Utility to recognize it, my entire network crashed.

After restarting my cable modem and Time Capsule, re-naming and re-creating my original network, re-establishing all the settings, etc. So naturally, I tried again, hoping I had done something careless the first time.

I was wondering if any one tried using D-Ling. If you use universal type repeaters they cannot repeat both bands.. Of course extending wireless is the worst way to do things..

Probably not, if you are asking about extending the network wirelessly The odds would be much better if the extender connects using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.

Virtually any device should work in that case. But should work, does not mean the same as will work. It’s always best to use devices from the same manufacturer if you want to extend the network, if only because you know the devices will work with each other well.

Important note for AirPort Express Users: If you are considering adding an AirPort Express to your network to stream music, or to provide wireless printing, you may find this article helpful: What is client mode?

Extending a wireless network – Using multiple Wi-Fi base stations wirelessly to extend the range of an AirPort network over a wider physical area, when the range of a single base station is insufficient.

Multi Wi-Fi base station network – A network that utilizes more than one Wi-Fi base station to extend the range of a network, or to extend features such as Internet access, music streaming, printing, storage, etc.

The Wi-Fi base stations may be connected together via Ethernet or wirelessly. Primary base station – This is typically the base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet.

Unless otherwise indicated, extended Wi-Fi base stations should be set to use bridge mode. Throughput – The amount of data that is transmitted or received each second, measured in megabits per second Mbps.

Before you add additional Wi-fi base stations to your network, you should consider whether or not you really need to. Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead.

The network configuration also becomes more complex. In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible.

You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible. Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput.

Ethernet offers up to one gigabit rate, which is much faster than wireless for wireless, the maximum rate is Mbps on Ethernet is also resistant to radio frequency interference and is easier to troubleshoot.

Additionally, as there is virtually no management overhead over Ethernet, more data will move from one point to another in the same space of time. Consider that the farther away you are, or the more obstructions between your Wi-Fi client device and the Wi-Fi base station such as bathroom tile which the signal must attempt to pass through, the weaker the radio signal strength and the lower the throughput.

Assuming that a single base station doesn’t fulfill your requirements, you should understand the different methods you can employ to extend your Wi-Fi network range, and choose which of those methods is best for you.

These methods are explained below. At the bottom of this article are links to individual articles that explain the set up and configuration for each method.

If you have an Airport Extreme setup and you want to use the Airport Express in repeater mode, does the Airport Express have to be hard wired or can it pick up the wireless from the Airport Extreme?

All of the answers above provide correct information, however if you are looking for higher wireless speeds, I would recommend using a hardwire Ethernet connection and then extending the network that way.

Wireless to wireless extension can lower streaming and download rates just as much as poor signal can. In my house, I use an Airport extreme from my modem on the second floor ad then an Airport Express to extend my network in an area that I have had poor reception.

I have tried both with and without a wired Ethernet connection and I have noticed significant changes to my download speed. I always have signal and of course the apple family of products has yet to fail me, but I have noticed this interesting difference.

While folks are right, it does extend a time capsule or extreme, with the new express if you want to do so over a wired network and you had tried to follow the default advice from airport utility you will have undoubtedly gotten confused as your network went away.

Given this as your desired topology: If you are unsure which one is the WAN, use the picture on the back of the box. You will have to use a more advanced setup than the default.

That said, the technology and the hardware has improved greatly over the last several years. Based on recent reports, you might be surprised by the results. PLA adapters on Amazon. Hard Wire Without question, nothing is better than a hardwired network line.

If you have the means, run a physical line to the other end of that house rather than using a PLA. If you can run a line, go for it. And once the network line is on the other end of the house, you can set up a wireless access point as described in option 1.

Some of the features can be duplicated with hardware from other vendors, but not as easily. If you replace your main network router with an Airport Extreme router, the latest hardware uses the current To extend the network, you need one more of the Airport Express base stations.

They use the same specification and work with the router in tandem. This means that you get the legacy support for the older devices while you have extenders that are not limited in range by their backward compatibility.

I use it on client networks whenever possible as a result. In option 2 I suggested setting up a second wireless access point on the far end of the house when using a power line adapter.

That suggestion included giving that 2nd access point a different network name and switching between then networks as needed. You can take your tablet and walk through the house and the device will move from one transmitter to the next, as needed, without you having to switch to a different network manually.

But the Express devices have the added ability to act as USB print servers plus they let you plug a home stereo into them and stream music to that device from iTunes on your Mac or PC.

The Airport Express devices still do not support The best they can do is So using the Express to extend the network will work, but it will not offer the fastest possible wireless speeds to the farthest reaches of your network.

I suppose you could add additional Extreme units to extend the main Extreme network. I would be an expensive means of expanding the network, but it should work. November 24, Reply.

Let me know how it works. I ordered a express to fill my 5GHz network. Steve Manke April 11, Reply. I thought I was being clear on that. The Expresses extend the range of the Extreme router.

But rather the reduced bandwidth of all the connecting devices together slowing the speed down. Chris November 28, Reply. The current one is new just installed within the last two months.

My house is small but I have a wall going through it that used to be an outside wall and it is hard to get wi-fi very strongly in the far side of the house. My son gets very frustrated with the intermittent wi-fi to his computer and we also have trouble streaming to our tv.

Currently we are using a powerline adapter as you mentioned above. It started out okay, but has become more frustrating. Seems to still have a lot of intermittent issues. Steve Manke November 29, Reply.

The Airport Express is designed to extend an Airport based network. I wish I had a better answer. You can get another non-Airport access point and put it near the wall. If you Google WDS WiFi, you should get instructions for configuring your existing network using the new access point as an extender.

Chris November 29, Reply. I just did a couple of searches to see if you could use an Express to extend a non-Airport based network. It looks like Apple dropped their formal support for WDS. An all Airport based network would be simple enough.

So you could replace your existing router, or you could add a non-Apple access point to extend your current routers reach using WDS. Daniel January 2, Reply. I have an older airport extreme, not sure the generation.

Thinking about buying the new Extreme 6th gen. Can I use the new Extreme and then use the older to extend the coverage? Would this be the best way? WiFi in the front of the house is terrible.

Steve Manke January 12, Reply. It might depend on how old your current Extreme is. If it can do Hannan Ahmad July 9, Reply. Wireless router which you are using should have a god range, and you should purchase a router based on range.

Extending the range also decreases the security of the network, but also provides a great utility. Cao July 11, Reply. I currently own an airport extreme, and I am having issues getting consistent WIFI signal throughout my house.

I am thinking about getting another airport station but was wondering, would you suggest getting a power line adapter, too? Is it worth it? Steve Manke July 31, Reply. If your wiring is clean, it makes for a good solution.

If your internal grid is a bit of a mess, network speed will be a slower and perhaps more problematic. That said, I think the newer hardware has improved things over what was on the market in the early days.

I have a client that has a powerline adapter in use in a BIG woodshop. They have a lot of saws and grinder on a complicated and convoluted power grid and its working well for them.

After that, all you can do is try. Nick October 31, Reply. I have a four bed and the furthest point the wifi is weak. I have seen that its not a good idea when using BT infinity to change the router for a different make.

Steve Manke October 31, Reply. If it does not, then the Airport should help with your range issue. The beamforming should help you get a signal at a distance because the router will use intelligence to focus the signal on the locations attempting to use it.

By switching to the Airport Extreme, you would then have the ability to add Airport Expresses to the network and have them act as extenders. In theory something similar can be done with non-Apple routers if you make use of the latest WDS implementations but Apple just makes it easier.

You can add several extended Wi-Fi base stations to expand a roaming network. Prices have dropped, reliability has improved, and speeds have increased. This might sound odd, but this could work:
