Allows for formatting, extensions, etc. Voltcraft sl 15 cm distance. Cinebench R10 Single 3,1GHz. In return, the low scope of interfaces on the device is aggravating, just like the fact that only the hard disk can be exchanged without great ado. A database is not for visualization of data. Text is always the correct way to store a phone number. Are you a loyal reader of notebookcheck?

If it’s paper forms, I guess you can’t avoid that, but it would seem as easy to just not have an entry for their phone number. Oh, it’s a bug all right. At some point a customer service operator is going to write: I wouldn’t store numbers with hyphens or include the extension in the same field.

I would use a separate field for the extension and just use the numbers. A database is not for visualization of data. When you want to use an autodialer, text message sending, or reverse search a number, you’ll need to do extra string parsing.

Also, if you want to group a set of customer by company and want to match them by phone number, having that extension in the same field is going to be a pain. I never said I’d store it as an integer.

I said I’d just store just the raw numbers as text. Thanks for the downvotes! What format are you going to use? If you’re storing international numbers you’re going to have different formatting.

It really depends on the application, there is no one good solution. But I’m sure using a numeric is a bad idea: You just put them in the format for what you need to dial to get to them.

If it’s a US company, you just have the 10 digit numbers for domestic, and you have the country codes prepended for international calling. If you are a multinational, and people in multiple countries will be using the phone list, then it does get somewhat stickier, but I’d just make a separate field for the country code, with instructions to ignore it if it matches your country.

Extension would also be a separate field, since you can’t dial that as a group, but rather need to wait for their phone system to pick up. That sounds like what I was thinking.

What do you advise for parsing and storing international numbers in a database? I have an Android application that uses the phone numbers but right now it only works properly for phones with a ‘1’ country code.

Don’t store the extra crap, just store the number. If you don’t do math on it, you don’t store it as a number. If you do math on it, you DO store it as some type of number. To me, it seems easier to do string parsing than to split up information.

It depends on what the application is, certainly, but it’s not hard to strip out everything that’s not a number if that’s what you need to do. If you plan to use this data in reporting it would be a whole lot easier to store the number with the formatting than to apply custom formatting in reporting tools outside of your application.

Just look at how many times microsoft uses a string for a boolean value in the windows registry. Yeah according to the answer booklet, question 15 was correct but question 11 was incorrect. The answer booklet had misprints, missing answers, etc.

That’s odd, because having been both a spreadsheet author and a database designer, I can tell you both involve one-to-many relationships and data dictionaries.

The easiest way I find to pick a data type is to think of possible values. Instead, many programmers think only of the type of data that will need to go in at a minimum. That’s not the right approach.

I can just see how that happened – “It’s an email adress, characters should be plenty! It only takes one, and it’s not going to occur during testing. It’ll happen probably a few months down the road and drive everyone crazy trying to figure out what the problem is.

Same email address pasted three times into a one-line input field because an accidential line break made it look empty. Also no input validation whatsoever. The way I learned it is this: You’ll never add two phone numbers together.

I suppose this may vary by DBMS If you are going to handle international numbers, it would probably make sense to store the country code in a separate field, as you would the extension, and then on your front end use a phone number formatting function that plugs in the appropriate dashes, parentheses and spaces based on that country code.

This gives you better sort options in case you ever need to build lists or reports based on country code information. Realistically, the argument can’t begin and end with the database data type, because you have to consider the front and possibly back end applications you are going to use to actually put number IN those fields too.

You need to consider validation routines as well to ensure that the data is coming in correctly, so much so that eventual. Your options may affect how you store the number, especially if you’re integrating with someone else’s software.

You may not even have a choice in the matter. This is pretty silly though, you don’t do math on a phone number field anyway, and a text field is more flexible in the event that a special character somehow makes it through.

Yah, I don’t like that question. Who knows what the author of the question has a hardon for. In my opinion the data would depend on intended usage of the overall database plus and other potential futues usages in mind to make the decision.

Also, I’m aware that some of the answers are actually formats types, not data types as the question is asking. Text, number and maybe boolean not sure are the only actual data types.

So I guess the official answer is number, but still, when approaching a real-life problem it really is a tossup between phone formatted, text, or number. I swear facebook knocks leading 0s from the start of a mobile number.

Think they would’ve failed Q It was killing me. So is fine, buy isn’t. Yup 04 is the most common phone number on the interwebs because idiot web designers try and store phone numbers as 32bit integers.

If you use an unsigned Integer, the max is If you use a normal bit Integer, the max is This was my first thought on this question. I was guessing that, since this data type is “Number” we are probably dealing with Access.

By default, that is going to be a 32 bit integer and too small to hold a full phone number. Max on a signed int32 is 2,,,; or as a phone number Granted, some quick googling tells me that you can set an Access Number field to a length of Double.

So, you can circumvent this problem; however, my guess is that the test writers were not thinking this deeply. I physically cringed when I saw “number” circled as the suggested data type for a phone number.

A long time ago I almost got burned using UINT for phone numbers before, early on realized we were getting multiple numbers of Add in international numbers to the mix and text is what I use now.

Dunno what you mean by wrong question but he did actually get it wrong. Text is always the correct way to store a phone number. D is correct, because a one to many relationship and data dictionary can be implemented using VLOOKUP, and both of them are obviously easy to implement in a database.

Ok I was beginning to doubt myself slightly, but when does a database engineer do screen mockups?! If it’s not a it’s definitely not b. My guess, from the other database question presented, is that the “database engineer” in this case of some poor bastard with a copy of Access and a PHB manager.

In which case, screen mockups are entirely within the realm of possibility. Man, don’t take this away from me. I need some answer, and right now, Data Type can fill that hole in my heart. A picture of an IT test is submitted as funny, people analyze the questions and answers instead.

I mean, if he hadn’t circled the wrong answers no one would have cared I’m pretty sure whoever wrote this is just fucking with the job candidates. There are no correct answers.

Excel or comparable products are great for building record sets and then using that to export to larger dbases. You don’t want multiple people accessing the production dbase.

So excel is very handy in that respect because you can produce basic record sets and move that around without a hassle. Anyone can edit anything, and break any constraint you may have.

Those issues have to be dealt with at some point. Either they will blow up, silently fail, or sneak bad data into you db – none of those are good. The data entry clerks don’t vet the data, that would be the dba or dbm and they would vet the data they get from their entry folk.

That, combined with extensive VBScript macros and a “custom security system” so that our competitors can’t have a look see. The tests from Futuremark allow creating a good basis for comparison.

Acer installs a very quiet and well-known 2. However, the data carrier lags a bit behind in terms of performance. It primarily bids what the Scorpio range has been developed for: A low-priced data carrier that has enough memory capacity available.

It’s been observed for years that chip manufacturers refresh their products on a regular basis. However, this is primarily often true only for the product name and less for the fundamental technological innovations.

The scores achieved in 3DMark Vantage points settle in the midfield of our database. We used a variety of current as well as slightly older games for the practical test.

It’s no secret that Battlefield 3 has forced the one or other high-end device to its knees. The demanding benchmark sequence at the beginning of the first single player mission could only be rendered smoothly with minimum settings It looks better for the other test candidates.

Gamers should turn to outright gaming laptops here. Acer’s product conception is divided here. We record a slight increase when playing a DVD As so often in the notebook sector, high-performance can hardly ever be fused with a low noise level.

In return, the mass memory is pleasantly quiet. The WD Scorpio Blue isn’t at all audible – neither while it’s being accessed, nor in terms of operating noises. Owners of a powerful laptop usually also have to be willing to accept the related side effects.

Then, an unpleasant surprise during load: The cooling solutions in the currently available notebooks often experience turbulences because of the Sandy Bridge processors’ Turbo Boost mode.

This can be seen in the too high temperatures during load operations and partly in CPU throttling. It’s no secret that this isn’t healthy for the installed hardware and that it could even have a negative impact on their lifespan.

As can be seen in the pictures, the hotter the processor cores got, the less Turbo mode was used. Nevertheless, the recorded frequency never fell under the CPU’s basic clock of 2.

Thus, we can’t speak of throttling. Both speakers are located on the case’s front, respectively on its bottom. A miracle shouldn’t be expected of the small “membranes”. The speakers built into a laptop usually shouldn’t be seen as an adequate replacement for full-fledged speakers or headphones.

The required jacks are available on the sides of the laptop. The included 90 watt power adapter takes care of the power supply. The low power consumption of 7. Here, the high performance profile is selected and the display’s brightness is increased to maximum.

The minimum battery life is determined with the lowest display brightness, disabled wireless modules WLAN, Bluetooth and energy saving profile using the BatteryEater’s Reader’s test.

An automatic script is executed for the runtime test. It opens a mix of Internet sites and changes constantly 40s rate. Thus, the Acer can score with that in terms of battery life and almost proves to be an endurance machine in view of the performance reserves.

The TravelMate GG50 presents itself with good equipment at a fair price in our tests. However, all that glitters is not gold. The device can meet the set requirements with the plain design, high-end workmanship, very good keyboard and touchpad.

Then, the opinions about the screen differ once again. On the one hand, the determined rates correspond to this price range; on the other hand, there would have been a higher potential.

The screen is non-glare, but again shows the drawbacks of weakly illuminated, contrast poor screens in the practical test. The hardware configuration has a positive impact on the overall picture.

This wasn’t quite achieved in practical use. The limits were quickly reached in hardware-consuming tracks, such as Battlefield 3. Games like Fifa 12 or even Anno could be played in a pleasant resolution on the Acer.

In return, the low scope of interfaces on the device is aggravating, just like the fact that only the hard disk can be exchanged without great ado. When all mentioned points are summarized, the image of a very fairly priced notebook is created, which can serve with enough computing reserves and a long battery life besides a few shortcomings.

Security goes like this: I thought it was a multi-episode story arc from The Office that I missed or from the UK series, despite “Michael” being the manager. I think it’s wierd and cool thst this showed up on the front page at the same time as the AskReddit about the “subway smell”, which is clearly being referenced here.

In a number variable, a 0 at the front of the number may be removed. And, everybody knows deep down that phone-numbers aren’t numbers, but are strings: If I said my phone number was fifteen billion, five-hundred and fifty-three million, six hundred and eighty-seven thousand and one hundred and forty seven, even non-IT people would think I’m not using the right type to represent my info.

Note that a number is not the same as a numeral [a string representation] — the number fifteen doesn’t have leading zeroes and isn’t tied to a particular base. But fifteen can be written as a base-ten numeral, or a base-two numeral with leading zeroes, or a roman-numeral.

Those are all different numerals representing the same abstract number. The last one should have been racing tadpoles instead of antique horse shoes. Full circle is always better.

Did Jill succeed in her diabolical plan? As one of the most well-known and widespread manufacturers in the notebook sector, the company Acer really doesn’t need an introduction.

The popular TravelMate series is continuously being updated with the newest technologies in order to always present the customer with attractive value for money offers. How the present TravelMate offshoot, with a strong graphics card, fares in practical use will be examined in the following review.

However, there is progress in terms of performance. Changes have also been made inside. The look is more straightforward and less robust than in the last models.

The optical illusion that is supposed to be created on the lid is successful: The conventional looks of the precursor has been skillfully improved and the case appears in a new “shine”.

The screen has been mounted into the case very well. The corresponding hinges do a good job and provide the lid with a good firmness. This results in high robustness and resistance.

The display lid construction can hardly be warped. Acer omits a locking mechanism on the TravelMate. The wide opening angle of the lid is surprising. It is only limited by the construction itself.

There is only one of the latter, which might prove annoying for the customer. The installed data carrier can be exchanged subsequently. A stop has been put to possible, uncomplicated upgrades in this case.

Compared to the previous generation, the design has been modified and updated, which can be seen in softer shapes and an improved line management. Only the hard disk can be removed without a lot of effort.

Opening the notebook generally leads to loss of warranty. These are only the basic connections for basic things. Despite the cutbacks, useful ports are still installed. All ports have been placed on the case’s sides.

The rear doesn’t have any interfaces. Two audio jacks are also installed. We notice that the interface positioning is concentrated on the far front of both sides.

Cables can cause space problems beside the laptop when the ports are used extensively. Security issues have unfortunately been moved into the background in the present TravelMate model.

This can quickly results in a loss of overview. There are useful tools in the software installation, anyway. There is also system recovery software and a connections manager. It’s not very surprising that the scope of delivery is limited to the most necessary.

This is now usually managed via a recovery partition on the hard disk, as is the case in our Acer device at hand. The standard instruction leaflets are found in the box besides the notebook.

A 1 year International Travelers warranty is also available. The key field is attractive with its plain design and looks. The layout is fairly tight, but not bad. The keyboard’s workmanship is good and it’s implemented into the case well.

The construction, respectively key height is optimally chosen. Inputs were executed without delays in the test. There is a small bar on the touchpad for scrolling. Scrolling isn’t a problem with it.

There are only a limited amount of pre-configured multitouch gestures. For example, it’s possible to zoom with two fingers. Thus, it shouldn’t be possible for external light to blind the user as much or even affect working on the laptop.

According to the determined rates, the screen sooner belongs to the budget range. The buyer has to shell out a lot more money for a better brightness. This is important for professional users, but average users can ignore it.

Content can be recognized on the screen in direct sunlight, but miracles shouldn’t be expected. As so often, the image stability is very good from the front, but the displayed colors fade when the angle is changed vertically or horizontally.

The lateral angles are a bit better and colors stay fairly true. When the screen is tilted to the front, the colors fade extremely. The content might not be recognized properly in certain situations.

Nevertheless, the notebook and its built-in screen convince in practical use. Besides the two physical cores, the user has two virtual cores available via Hyper Threading.

The load of applications can be divided among these providing the software supports this technology. Intel introduced the aforementioned automatic system overclocking together with the Arrandale chipset generation of dual core processors.

This can be observed well in the Cinebench CPU tests, for example. The benchmark tools Cinebench R The use of the second core leads to twice as much computing power and a result of points multi core 64bit.

The dual core processor’s performance in Cinebench R Nevertheless, it is generally on the expected level. To assess the available system performance, we sent the laptop through our PCMark benchmark course.

There’s one done up for every quote and every job we take on. This amounts to over 1TB across all our branches. That, combined with extensive VBScript macros and a “custom security system” so that our competitors can’t have a look see.

If I were an educator, I think I’d be doing shit like this constantly just to keep myself sane. I’d store a number in text, for whatever it’s worth. Allows for formatting, extensions, etc.

This look an awful lot like a the practice exams my year 12 IT teacher would write. There was one on an exam that has “You locked the keys in the server room, how do you get them back?

Once again thanks to Reddit I find myself on the way home on the bus losing my shit like a mad man. These questions were written a lot like law school exam questions.

Normally a parade of horribles with random things thrown in to keep it interesting. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

It’s a string of digits. Nvm, I always have trouble with the data type questions. That would be the point. Why the fuck am I typing this right now? Is the beer really that strong?

I always arrive at the party late. Then who was phone? Data Type I’m not sure I like this answer. I’m pretty sure whoever wrote this is just fucking with the job candidates and not in a good way. It is not a number.

By the way, who doesn’t use the standard question mark to end a question? My guess is that this teacher is somewhat older and from the British Isles. You’ll get ripped apart there.

Did Jill succeed in her diabolical plan? Is it a way to get simple data manipulations done by lower tech level employees? Is it good for keeping data integrity high? Whoever wrote this exam. I would have walked out of the testing and filed a complaint.

Doubt there’s anything funny there. The world is your oyster. What is this, Subway?! What an asshole, telling people California. Because I may qualify That is a weird exam.

No link shorteners or HugeURL in either post links or comments.

You just put them in the format for what you need to dial to get to them. Those are all different numerals representing the same abstract number. I’d store a number in text, for whatever it’s worth. The limits were quickly reached in hardware-consuming tracks, such as Battlefield 3.
