Please try again later. I’ve had it a little over 24 hours, and as of right now, I’m not pleased with it. I’m having constant errors with the Google apps. I’m not even using them, and am getting errors!

What I’ve done so far: I uninstalled what little the tablet would allow me to, mostly Amazon apps, and allowed the Acer update. I also copied my books over from my old tablet Nextbook 8HD.

I’m going to do a complete reset on the tablet, and take it back to factory, and if that doesn’t help, I’ll be sending it back. And wishing I could send back the accessories I ordered to go with it.

I think it’s amazing that my old Nextbook tablet other than a cracked touch input screen has run for years without issue, yet an Acer lasted less than 2 days. The text above is what I had written up prior to doing a factory reset on the tablet.

After the factory reset It works great, but it hasn’t done even one update of any kind. I don’t understand it, but I don’t really care either. I’m not a social media addict, nor am I a YouTube addict.

I’d love to lose all the Acer apps, not to mention the multitude of shopping apps. And I wish I knew whose idea it was to make McAfee Security one of the apps that can’t be uninstalled – pure genius there, faceless Acer dude.

To me, a tablet is nothing more than a book reader I can connect to free wifi if I need to quickly look something up, or check the weather during a pit stop on a trip. For that, this may be the perfect budget tablet.

Being that my eyes aren’t what they were 30 years ago, it’s not terribly likely to happen, but you never know. While it’s not going to win any speed contests, or beauty contests, the tablet is snappy.

The Intel Atom quad core processor gets the job done well enough, though there is occasional lag – nothing major, but it’s there. The back of the tablet is both matte finished, and textured to prevent fingerprints.

The screen is a fingerprint magnet though, so I recommend you get some matte finished screen protectors to cut down on the prints, and the glare when you’ve got it outside, or next to a window.

The Surface 3 is the first Surface that I have ever owned, and it has comfortably taken the place of my iPad 4. They are both the same weight, they are about the same size, and they are both comfortable for reading documents on.

It took me about 3 hours to get it completely up and running. After that, I was able to spend the rest of the evening reading articles to my heart’s content. Main things I love about it: I have been searching for an active digitizer tablet that was light, shaped similarly to a sheet of paper, and within my price range.

This device offers all of that, and much more. Compared to all of my other devices, this browser is devilishly fast! They don’t have the same quality as a high class system, but they don’t sound tinny.

That makes me exceedingly happy, because I love using my tablets to play music while I’m chilling at home. I believe the Surface team when they say that the Surface is supposed to be a stage for Windows 8.

Many of the gestures make sense once you figure them out. That’s similar to the battery drain on my iPad. I do a lot of annotating and notetaking with my iPad.

I have not measured how fast it charges when it is turned off, but I assume that it would be faster. This is fine for people who charge their devices at night. It’s not perfect, but it helps in a jiffy.

It is not magnetic, and can be very wiggly. I like the fact that I can use my cell phone charger on it, but I would preferred that the charger sat more flush with the device.

While it has yet to get as hot as my iPad 4 does, the area where the processor is does get toasty. The tablet did get severely hot during the first round of updates.

I got around this by using my Thermaltake portable fan to cool it while it was updating. Like with all tablets, battery life drains faster with higher brightness levels and intensive processor usage.

I have used the lowest brightness setting because it is the easiest on my eyes, and what I am doing with it is not intensive. I also do not use Google Chrome or Firefox. I have no need for my bookmarks to be linked on my tablets.

That’s mostly due to my iPad training. I usually only have two applications up at one time on my tablets, maybe three. I always advocate that people should get what they need. If you don’t know if one model is enough, try it out or buy the improved version in this case, the GB edition.

There were no demonstration units near me during the time I preordered it, so I decided to be safe. Also, I didn’t have to have the keyboard. It’s a great keyboard, a wonderful cover, but I can easily use the onscreen keyboard.

I don’t type with my tablet when I’m on the go, I write on it! Just exactly what I need to read to make up my minds. I like the fact that you include battery life in different Intel processors Ivy vs Haswell.

Thank you for the very useful reviews! I am trying to find an option that will provide good work productivity word, excel, serve as a tablet, and be good for taking notes real note-taking, not just side comments.

What would you suggest? Greatly appreciate your insights. Thank you — very useful reviews. I am looking for a small and light laptop that I can do work productivity on powerpoint, excel, etc.

I am not sure what size screen I should go for — I would like to go as small as possible while not severely compromising my ability to work directly on the laptop I do not use an external monitor or keyboard since I am very mobile when I am working.

What minimum screen size do you suggest? Thanks for the best article. Thanks for your best guide!!! Hi Thank you for this very informative article. I am struggling to find a suitable solution.

Currently it seems that a surface pro 3 is the only option. I require at least a haswell i5, Do you have an alternate? I would like to get a faster machine and have been watching the Alienware M11x R3 version on Ebay.

It is my only computer, and have used the facial recognition from the start and am hooked on it. Thank you for any suggestions. So if you can wait till then, you should.

If not, maybe you can turn your attention to some of the available 13 inchers.. Try it out yourself and you will see what i mean. That 64 gigs of eMMC will definitely be a hold back though, that’s why I went with the Acer Aspire R11 with the pentium n, but for people who only want to use the web, the Zlate 11 is definitely a viable option.

Would like to upgrade to the R3 model, but need your input and advice. My machine still works great, I just want more speed, and no I do not use it for gaming, at all and never will. Love your reviews…wish you would review the lenovo miix 2 Keyboard—small with magnetic connection, not folio.

I am looking to buy an ultra book for my wife. She will use it to surf the internet, watch movies, listen to some music and use MS Office. I am confused between. For daily use, I feel that an 11 incher is a better pick over a 10 incher, which might feel too slow.

They are very inexpensive and quite good for the money. I need a small light slim powerful second hand machine preferably core i3 and above ram 4gig plus memory gig plus etc.

She will be getting all textbooks put on it. A touch screen would be really helpful for her. Only one I can find is the surface pro 3, the price tag hurts. Do you know of any other that would work?

Would something with a inch display work, or does it have to be bigger? If they made a regular laptop with the same internals they could get down to like grams. Dell Inspiron 11 is my choice but touch and hinge added extra cost.

Would you mind to suggest alternatives?? Dear Cate Many thanks for the useful information about the mini laptops but I am a bit confused. It will be sued for only browsing the net, office affairs working with the Office software and Power point presentations — need appropriate port for this and read the Ebooks and also watching the movies.

Which model you recommend me. Thank you very much. My uses are limited to web, mail, PPT and other office jobs. Could you comment on the need for Intel hardware security features eg.

It is not clear to me if it is worth paying for this if I am running Linux, or I could reframe the question and ask, does a MS Windows OS on hardware with vPro Technology and Trusted Execution Technology offer more security than Linux on some less costly processor?

TPM can be useful, there’s an article here: Thanks for the reply and the link. Surprisingly, some chromebooks come with TPM, who would have guessed. Btw, I appreciate the ultrabookreview ‘relational database’ approach.

This model also a Core M3 processor. I have no idea why the battery life is not better like 6 hours. The battery is still small on this thing, especially for a Core M3 that needs more energy than a Pentium or Celeron.

COuld try playing with the screen’s brightness and Power Modes in Windows, maybe you can squeeze a little more. I usually have no less than 5 chrome browser tabs open at a time while on Word. I bought this for work so I could leave my 13 inch at home, pleased pretty much.

I think you should find some within your budget. What’s the CPU in that euro Dell? I’d reckon a Celeron? That’s rather slow for Photoshop imo. Dear Andrei, Thank you so much for your answer, I really appreciate it!

One question — Lenovo flex 11 comes with i3 1,4Ghz. And Pentium has if i remember 2,16Ghz. Aren’t more Ghz better? And i gave up on that new Dell… saw some reviews on youtube…. A higher frequency helps, but only when comparing similar processors.

I had turned off auto-brightness at this point, so I knew it wasn’t that. In the ‘Advanced’ part of the power management menu, I noticed an option for dimming the screen. I feared that my keyboard was messed up, but I realized that I had to type slower for Google Docs to register my keystrokes.

In addition, there were sizing discrepancies between the Surface and my desktop. The Google Doc pages on the Surface seemed to have around half an inch taken away from the bottom.

I have no idea why there was a difference, but I greatly enjoyed being able to use two devices to tackle the report the document on Google Docs was a group report. I used a spare, resizable screen protector that I had laying around.

I thought that I was going to ruin the pen when I was writing on it. I’m looking for a better screen protector because I am hard on my devices This was meant for 13 inch laptops. It is a tighter fit than I was expecting, but the case holds the Surface, my notebook, a pen, my Kindle, a Bluetooth mouse, and the Surface’s charger easily.

However, I have never had this issue when I use the charger I bough in Japan 12 W charger with the appropriate charging cable. I think that if the connector is not properly aligned, it will light the indicator, but it will not charge.

My suggestion is to find an appropriately rated charging cable 2. I have used the Surface for note taking and coursework for about a semester now. The Surface has been working amazingly as my ‘iPad replacement!

I can quickly sort and edit papers through DrawBoard, which is great because I like using the pen to edit and annotate documents. There are even times when I don’t use my main computer for days on end because I don’t need it for day-to-day tasks.

Overall, this has been the perfect product for me. Comment people found this helpful. A Wonderful experience thus far. Just don’t forget to buy the pen. I picked my Surface 3 up from my local Best Buy yesterday sorry Amazon, I had a gift card with the expectation it wouldn’t be quite as good as the Surface Pro 3 I’m used to.

Well the good news is, I was pleasantly surprised. For what I use the Surface 3 for, it runs just as fast as my Pro 3. Now, let me be clear, I use my Pro 3 for taking notes, browsing the internet, and streaming my local collection of movies and tv shows.

Mainly as a business device. In regards to those needs, the Surface 3 shows no discernable difference in quality or performance. If you decide you want to start throwing CAD or Photoshop at it be my guest, but I can’t promise it will work as well; as a matter of fact it most definitely won’t.

The Surface 3 and the Surface Pro 3 are meant for different levels of productivity. Now, split screen multitasking works great, it’s awesome to have my email on one side of the screen and a couple tabs open on the other.

Also taking notes on one side with a skype conference call on the other is fairly common for me and performs quite nicely. The tablet can get a bit warm to the touch, but that’s to be expected of any PC when you start really doing work on it.

Yes, I called it a PC, because that’s what it is. Gone are the days of Windows RT with it’s drab app store and lack of third party support. This is the real deal Windows wise.

I personally plan on buying a few of these for my family to take to school and their work, it’s really that good. Lighter than my Pro 3 by a noticeable amount and still does what I need it to do.

All in all it’s a wonderful device, just don’t forget to buy the pen, it is separate this time around so be mindful. Incredibly annoying to charge. I really do love my Surface.

Super lightweight, responsive, great to travel with and compatible with all my work software citrix, etc. Two incredibly annoying cons It will die, and you will be sad.

Its very wiggly, falls out easily and just feels flimsy. I’m constantly worried I’m going to move it the wrong way and break it. I’m baffled why they haven’t come up with a better charging solution.

I can see the appeal of using the universal charging unit, but it just doesn’t work where its placed on the tablet and with the shape of the charger provided. I feel like Microsoft really missed the mark on something really basic.

They’ve got the bells and whistles right, but you can’t use the bells and whistles with a dead tablet. Comment 8 people found this helpful. See all reviews. See all customer images.

A higher frequency helps, but only when comparing similar processors. A Core i3 is a faster option compared to a Pentium, so the GHz difference is not important here. There are some bits of information I would like to see made more visible.

I care about the build quaility, so I would like to know if it is plastic or otherwise, if there’s a fan or not, and if the screen is matte. Usually, it’s a long search to dig up this information.

In tables, this info could fit in under “type”, so it is available at a glance. Your email address will not be published. Notify me of followup comments via e-mail. You can also subscribe without commenting.

The sound isn’t half-bad, so listening to music on the speaker s? Tablets should come with nothing but the basic Android necessities installed. I guess that would be too much like right for a major corporation to understand.

Also, no tablet should be sold by a major manufacturer that’s locked into its factory version of Android. Come on Acer, at least release an update to Lollipop for this thing so we’ll have better control of what gets stored, or installed on our micro sd cards.

Anyways, that’s on Acer, not on the tablet itself. Since the reset, I’m pleased. If Acer would roll out a Marshmallow update for it, I’d be thrilled with it, but that ain’t gonna happen, so For those of you that are wanting to root this tablet, here’s a bit of advice.

The root method that worked on the B a year ago, doesn’t work on this one. I’m not saying you can’t try, but be aware it may not work. Don’t try charging it with a phone charger. It’s not strong enough.

My old Palm charger has worked on everything I’ve connected it to up ’til this. Apparently 2 amps isn’t enough to charge it, even in sleep mode. The factory charger, and the extra charger from my old Blackberry Playbook work just fine.

The Google apps updated, and again the errors started, yet fewer than the first time it happened. First, I disabled Drive, and uninstalled the update. Then I went through the rest of the Google apps, first disabling, and then uninstalling the updates.

The only Google apps I left were: Then, I rebooted the tablet. There have been no errors since. I also uninstalled all of the Amazon apps, YouTube, and disabled the Acer apps.

There may have been others. If it starts acting up again, there will be another edit. As of right now, it boots without errors, so I’m hopeful. That said, I’m about fed up with hassling with it.

Any more errors this week, and I think it’ll be easier to ship it back than continue to fight to make it work. I am definitely not a fan of Android 4. Edit 4 – 16 months later This has turned into a good little tablet.

I’ve used it to read hundreds of books, stream a few movies, listen to music, and occasionally look something up online when I’m away from home. It does all of those things well, and the battery lasts reasonably long.

I’ve also added a GPS program, and it works great. Using it as an 8″ GPS unit requires a little forethought into where and how you’re going to mount it, but it absolutely works great.

Almost all Google apps on mine have been disabled in order to keep it running without errors. This will be my final update on it. It’s lasted 16 months, so if it dies tomorrow, I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of it.

Comment 11 people found this helpful. Was this review helpful to you? Nice for the price. Good screen, sufficiently smooth operation, clean design, Lollipop 5. The speakers aren’t very good, but I use headphones or a bluetooth speaker anyways.

The only annoying thing is the “low memory” notification in the system tray. Even MB is enough to trigger the notification, and there’s no way to disable it or change the memory threshold. With that being said, the tablet’s performance isn’t affected at the onset of “low memory”.

I also recommend getting a screen protector for this because fingerprints easily stick to the screen. Comment 18 people found this helpful. I got this tablet for Christmas to replace a Nexus 7.

I use it for facebook and reading e-books. I have no problem with the system memory low app. Also watch Netfix with ear buds, Works great for my uses, Loved the price over buying a new Nexus tablet,.

Fast tablet, good clear screen. Good amount of storage and very, very good battery life. Comment 7 people found this helpful. Looks good feels good and is well worth the money.

Economy vs luxury both are good but should not be compared aginst each other. Comment 2 people found this helpful. This tablet is as good as any of the expensive ones. It runs apps from google play and the Amazon store.

Best low priced tablet I have seen. All well built and thought out. Even the speaker is awesome with good bass. It is super fast as well. After 6 months the battery would not charge. The USB charge connection was loose and at first if I held it in one position it would charge.

This worked for a month or so and then it would indicate charging but would charge only when turned off.

The microSD card slot makes it easy to bring more media files with you as well as provides the ability to easily transfer files to and from your tablet. And with up to 10 hours battery life you have plenty of juice to make it through your day on the go.

Overall, I love my surface! I will be certain to update along the way if I run into any issues or what-not. I found this out while trying to chase down my screen brightness weirdness.

When the system was logged in and sitting for a bit, it would brighten.
